Stuff like Adam's "who let these idiots roll up a party?" makes me really glad that Dice Friends has a rotating cast of players, all of whom seem equally capable of holding their own in a room full of other comedians.

SO many parallels with the bronze age collapse in that opening monologue. GGWP Cam!

That and more directly the fall of Rome.
@bryceschug4866 жыл бұрын
FDRpi I do see some similarities with the fall of the Roman Empire, but the agriculture angle is what points to more of a bronze age collapse. I'm Cam's story it was magic enabling the increased production of food, and then when magic failed it brought famine. One theory about the bronze age collapse (it is all theories that far back until we invent time travel) is that irrigation provided the extra food, and also lead to nutrient depletion which brought famine.

So far, Cam's paladins remind me a lot of Elizabeth Moon's in the Deed of Paksenarrion. Whom the gods choose, they nudge in the direction of where they are needed; it's up to the chosen to pay attention to those nudges and then figure out and deal with whatever situation they find. Dice Friends is great so far. The rotating cast of players, DMs, and characters is working well. Also, wow, Cam can really set a scene.

Graham - your Rapier absolutely could kill cleanly. Under the skull, back of the neck. There are actually treatise that talk about other "quick" death spots but they're more suffering than just, well, a pithing needle that went to far.

I've been watching Cam's new campaign in this setting before I went back to see Burning Bright, and it's awesome how I'm recognizing things that were first introduced here but which I first saw there--like this imperial officer (who is a hundred years older and emaciated and soldier-less in the new campaign) or the abandoned city itself, or the burning capital city (called "The Golden City" in the new campaign--an interesting euphemism). Interesting also how, having seen the new campaign first, I can take a good guess at the secret behind this one. Props to Cam for doing great worldbuilding the first time around, then doing so well with his own source material on the new campaign a year later!

This is shaping up to be much better than the last Cameron campaign. Murder on the Semolo Plateau was good but I feel like this is much more in Cameron's wheelhouse.
@Zara-Bari6 жыл бұрын
I think part of the problem with the last campaign was that he was using a world and characters designed by a different DM for a specific purpose. He seemed to flounder a bit because of that, especially with the characters the audience had already met previously. He's stylistically very different from Dale, which isn't a bad thing, but I think it made it more difficult for him to DM. That said, I miss Semolo Plateau already. I am enjoying this campaign a lot though, so it's a fair trade.
@Grimwear6 жыл бұрын
I mean I brought it up during the last campaign and I don't mean to be beating a dead horse but I think it was last campaign they'd set it to 3 sessions then had a murder mystery setting which forced Cameron to take control of the campaign to get it done on time. And that made the campaign very railroady but more importantly didn't give the players time to interact as a group. I'm not super far in this campaign but so far I haven't heard anything of a session limit and more importantly everyone is interacting and roleplaying as a group making it an ideal situation where Cam can do his DMing without feeling obliged to force everyone to move along at a brisk pace.
@Zara-Bari6 жыл бұрын
Didn't they say two sessions? Personally, I like knowing how many sessions a campaign is supposed to go for. I think Cam's style is just different from Dale's. Based solely on the campaigns in Dice Friends so far, Cam seems to enjoy the storytelling part most, and so tends to keep the players going along the way he wants them to, whereas Dale seems to like to sit back and watch the fireworks as the players cheerfully ignore the plot and do whatever. I suspect Dale is also more experienced as a DM, but that may be my imagination.
@Grimwear6 жыл бұрын
Darn maybe I selectively ignored that piece of information. I don't disagree with you about how Cam DMs (he did the same with his campaign from years ago where he dictated how the party was to be split) but the problem is that with time constraints you're then forced into 2 avenues. Either the players have freedom and the dm makes the story fit for the time allowed or the dm has control and the players follow along as the dm makes sure they hit every beat in time. The problem with the second and what we got last session is that until the last session it devolved into Cam as an npc talking to 1 party member and the others sitting on the sidelines, then doing it again with another. It's boring to watch and boring to play. It was brutal last campaign especially with Ian and Cori having a 1000 yard stare where they barely said a word. So far this new campaign is a lot better but if I were to choose I'd much rather have a campaign like the first where everyone got to contribute and be involved than one where 2/5 people are involved at a time while the other 3 sit on their hands.
@Zara-Bari6 жыл бұрын
That doesn't really have anything to do with the limit though, I don't think. The ten session limit was established from the beginning of the first campaign. These are just shorter campaigns, which I think are probably easier to run in a way as there's less to keep track of for less time, and you have to get five people together fewer sessions in a row. And I think Ben basically put himself in jail, so the split was because of player action, not DM railroading. But maybe that's just my perception.

I like Ben, but I find that I appreciate him more when there's a break between Ben sightings. Sort of like how tourists on Safari get excited to see something like a kudu, but not so excited about impala, because impala are plentiful and out in the open where you can see them all the time and (no matter how beautiful they are) they sort of lose their interest when you see too many of them for too many days in a row. Basically what I'm saying is that Ben is like a big, stripy (plaid is like stripes, right?) antelope with a loud voice and fancy spiraling horns.

This is great stuff, but if I have to make one complaint it's that it's really hard to listen to this while doing absolutely anything that requires any volume or while anything producing sound in general is going on. Cam talks sooooo incredibly quiet sometimes that it's impossible to hear him. Increase his mic volume in the future perhaps?

Hi, LRR people, ... Okay, as you're improv people, you make more use of your talents and experience by playing a different group of characters in each story arc. I miss the previous characters, settings and stories, which i hope you take as a complimen. I can get used to this, and it is fun. Thanks for always being good company.

Is Commoner some kind of homebrew class? I'm guessing it's weak (ie low hit dice) to justify Worth being a lower level Paladin without being effectively weaker than the rest of the party. Also really excited to see the next session!
