I always wondered how it was possible that Prey was an excellent Figaro (of Rossini) AND gave the best and most passionate and tragic performance of the Dichterliebe. I feel that this cycle must have meant something special for him. And now I see both performances on the same page of KZbin!

Beside Hans Hotter, Hermann Prey is the only baritone, who can compete the tenors Aksel Schiøtz and Fritz Wunderlich when it comes to Dichterliebe, the most romantic of all song-cycles. Hokanson plays the piano with virtuosity.

So am I! In general, performers such as actors and singers avoid the use of their hands for fear of the audience's reactions; but Prey always uses them quite aesthetically - because quite naturally, I suppose...
