R.I.P. Dick Clark (November 30, 1929 -- April 18, 2012)
More Info: www.DonnaLoren.net -
In 1963, right after signing with Dr Pepper as their national spokesperson, 16-yr old Donna Loren, "The Dr Pepper Girl" co-hosted this ABC-TV Special with Dick Clark. This was the official launch of her new position with the soft-drink company. Her 5-year stint with the company posted Dr Pepper's largest sales gains in their history to that time. This show was a very unusual live televised Hollywood Party, filmed in 1963 at the home of Bob Marcucci, then manager of Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Johnny Rivers and Lou Christie, among others. Located in the heart of the Sunset Strip on Sunset Plaza Drive, the home was a shocking pink Spanish Villa (previously owned by Laurence Olivier, Anne Baxter and John Hodiak) overflowing on this night with celebs like Donna's mentor Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon, Jan Berry with Jill Gibson, Dean Torrance, Connie Francis, Dick and DeeDee, Johnny Mathis, Bobby Vinton, Dick Dale, Deborah Walley, Wayne Newton, Bill Medley, Bobby Hatfield, Connie Stevens, Shelly Fabares, George Hamilton, Jack Jones, John Ashley, Bobby Vinton, Paul Peterson, Nick Adams and Trini Lopez to mention a few of those interviewed.
Donna Loren was the one-and-only "Dr Pepper Girl" from 1963 to 1968. She was signed to a long-term contract with the soft-drink company to sing all television and radio commercials, do all magazine and billboard advertising representing them in every capacity, sometimes sharing the spotlight with American Bandstand's Dick Clark. This relationship led to her touring in Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars with other popular acts like Diana Ross and The Supremes and singing solos in the popular Beach Party films starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. Later, she became the regular female vocalist on the popular 60's American live rock n roll TV show "Shindig" and she appeared in singing and acting roles in many iconic TV shows like Batman, The Monkees, Gomer Pyle, The Mothers-In-Law, Red Skelton, Milton Berle and various game shows. She released 22 singles and an album in the sixties. Ms Loren is currently in the studio again making music: / donnalorennow

Amazing! Great group of talented people who were about to be swept up in a wave called...BEATLEMANIA! If this was Oct. '63, by Dec. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" would hit the airwaves. Nothing in music would ever be the same.

This was broadcast Saturday, November 30, 1963, eight days after Kennedy was murdered. Besides, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" wasn't released as a single by Capital Records until Thursday, December 26, 1963.

Hum, Dean Martin, Sinatra and the Four Seasons still managed to make big hits at the height of the Beatlemania. It did put most of the teenage singers out of business, but "adult music" remained strong

How cool was it that Dick Clark brings a copy of brother and sister act Nino Tempo and April Stevens album over for them to sign for him. Hey, if Dick Clark was collecting autographs...that's okay by me.

Did you know they were brother and sister. They were on a show in ‘63 with Dick Clark and Donna Lauren co hosted. Tons of young stars! Sponsored by Dr. Pepper. Bing Crosby had a hit with the same song.

Annette refers to her 21st birthday "last week" which means this get- together was captured on or around Halloween of 1963, about a month before broadcast. Of course it was impossible for these performers to realize that pop music (and our entire culture) was about to be altered dramatically and rapidly in the coming months.

There was a lot of collateral damage. I suspect an assessment of artists in the top 20 of 1963 and then of 1965 would result in very little continuity. The difference between 1960 and 1969 was incomprehensible. Perhaps the greatest period of musical evolution in history.

Dick Clark and "Dr. Pepper" were entwined during the '60s, '70s, and '80s- they were one of "AMERICAN BANDSTAND"'s regular sponsors, and he was forever finding ways to help them to reach that crucial "youth market" they aimed their beverage at. One way was their sponsorship of this special...

Fantastic artifact of the era. Thanks for sharing, Donna! Given the date of the broadcast (one week and a day following the assassination of President Kennedy), I'm curious to know how far in advance of broadcast day the show was filmed.

There were all so young and good looking. This was during my youth and they were all the most popular young stars of that Era. I had such a crush on Shelley Fabares . "SHINDIG" hadn't even started on TV yet.

Obviously shooting on location with the video technology of the time was still troublesome - the glaring, contrasty lighting being one of the most difficult aspects of the situation. Yes, I realize this a kinescope film of a TV screen showing the program, which adds to the poor visual quality, but it still was pretty crude. At the time, of course, we just accepted this when watching TV.

@@chiasiaosianmoe9770 He's not racist, I think what he was trying to say was times were different and that they weren't on there because they were bad singers but because that's just how the world was back then. And it was unfair. And it doesn't sound to me like he was making fun of anybodies race.
