I watched this interview twice, with Dick Clark treating his musical guests with the utmost kindness, respect, and dignity, and disarmingly, asking them questions that everyone can relate to and feels good and comfortable with…food. And he respectfully gave Syd his due credit (while looking at him in the eye) for the songwriting he did for the band. What a skillful, gracious host he was! All you critics and haters of Clark out there, put a sock in it!

Having domineering and stubborn tendencies doesn't mean you can't be a kind person at the same time. No-one is 100% good or evil, and with all the interviews and song lyrics I've heard, I'm pretty sure Roger values the humane and compassionate part of himself more that anything. That being said, acknowledging our flaws is indeed an important part of the solution.

I think it was the Pat Boone interview where he just stares blankly at the host...that what the stories say. However so many stories about Syd have been embellished over the years to the point of being false. Great to see this clip for the first time. Syd does look abstracted and not quite there however. And Clarke moved quickly to Rick I noticed.....

yes it Syd seems a lot different than ...say.. the interview he and Waters do with some jackass saying their music was too loud. That he handled really well. Also sometimes Clark would interview a band before and after a song...if I remember correctly.

A lot of people on here slagging off Dick, but he's probably just putting them at ease in a very short segment. And it's an improvement on "what's your favorite color?" (apart from pink). That had been a typical question asked of pop stars at one time. It just wasn't taken that seriously, even tho a lot of it was great music. Also, Dick was a star here, while the Floyd were practically unknowns, certainly in the US.

Some writers for a Pink Floyd fanzine interviewed Dick Clark a few decades after this. Clark's recollection was that they were nice gentlemen, and he only remembered it as being pleasant. Same with Pat Boone, who also had them on his show that week (a videotape of that one has never surfaced). In that one, Syd was interviewed but wouldn't say much. Years later Boone still said they were nice.
@darryl_mason
@darryl_mason 2 жыл бұрын
That was the case for most of the claims of 'Syd Lost It On TV!' until the videotapes resurfaced. I noticed Pink Floyd members changed their versions of the Syd Days when it became clear most of the TV appearances he did were perfectly fine and he was trying to be The Pop Star the rest of the band wanted him to be. Let's never forget that Syd did actually try to do what EMI and the rest of the band wanted for most of 1967. He knew they couldn't be The Next Beatles before everyone else did. He got it. He knew their limitations.

Compared this Syd to the Syd from a month or 2 earlier when he and Roger are being interviewed together. In that interview, you can clearly see the LIFE and SPARKLE in his eyes. There was an air of lightness and happiness to him. He had such charm and awareness at that stage. It's CRAZY how only a month or two later he would overdose and the person that was Sid would be no more. Nobody home. Like a lobotomy, where the personality is killed but the body lives on, which is evident in this interview.

It's not as simple as that, mental health never is. Syd's deterioration was full of ups and downs: in his interview with Meatball Fulton in late 1967, Syd is totally gone, his answers are very strange and hard to understand, yet in 1971 while interviewed by Giovanni Dadomo Syd is totally lucid and together, talking about old times and making plans. According to his sister he could be okay for weeks and then descend into dark periods of paranoia and depression that could last for months.

This was very cool to watch. Pink Floyd on prime time American Bandstand at this point in their career. Roger seemed initially turned off by the whole unexpected having to have to interact at that juncture. Dick Clark was very gracious though and I think quite respectful, knowing Pink Floyd already weren't just another flash in the pan band but a genuine artistic entity. Any shots of Syd fascinate me, and "Fats" as he was graciously nicknamed by the band did just fine here. No need to try and read into too much here. Peace

Clark could see the insanity in Syd's eyes and thus moved on quickly. Of all the things that the human mind could conceive of to ask Pink Floyd in 1967, he asks them what they ate over the past two days. It's like seeing The Christ and, having one question to ask, asking how many bowel movements he's had since the Crucifixion.

I think part of it is because at this time, music wasn't really respected as an art on the level of television or movies. That's obviously not the case now, most of these bands who came over from the UK were viewed as boy bands despite obviously being exceptionally talented musicians. You can see The Rolling Stones on Mike Douglas or The Who on Smothers Brothers and they get asked very similiar questions that aren't about music

According to Richard Wright, in a 2001 interview, Dick Clark asks Syd what he likes about America, to which Syd pauses, and then blurts out "hamburgers". Which isn't even very unusual if Syd indeed enjoyed hamburgers. I don't know it there was another unaired segment or if Richard's memory is unfavorable toward Syd.

Roger Waters is quite charming in this very brief interview! I didn't quite catch what Barrett said at the end of his answer. He said "Oh, I think we're here for ten days" incomprehensible... Syd sure does seem quite lucid and not unhinged like has been reported but he does seem simply bored! Rick Wright is such a pleasant gentleman. My all-time favorite Rock/Pop/Psychedelic Organist! I must say, I have such admiration for the late Dick Clark who had the foresight to appreciate The Pink Floyd's talent and invite them on his show. I have read that Syd Barrett had his hair permed at Vidal Sassoon in Beverly Hills during this tour which he wasn't happy with. In the song "Vegetable Man", Barrett sings "My haircut looks so bad"!

@@raulmacias1311 You're right about that . Plus, that Van Morrison episode had been videotaped *and* broadcast before this Pink Floyd appearance (both in color). If you look at the background set, you may notice the designs on the wall, which were used to highlight color. It is hit and miss as to which episodes they kept in color and which they only kept a B&W copy. There were also episodes they didn't keep or got lost.

What a rarity to see Dick Clark Bandstand have such a obscure unknown relatively speaking on a major US show.W old have liked to see the song they lipped sync to.I was very young when they came on the rock scene in America. A friend of mine who was in a band together a bit older knew of them said that they were very psychedelic and British. He said they were on the edge.It was probably the 1st time I heard that word PSYCHEDELIC, It stuck so did the name.
