When I watched this 3 years ago I cried of happiness so much so I lost my contact lens. Same thing happened today but this time the feelings were not quite the same. If it wasn't for Dick Smith I would not be a makeup artist today.

I wrote Dick a letter , like probably thousands of others with photos of my work enclosed. A week later the phone rang, and my Mom with the kind of voice that tells you that she knows something that is making her happy, said "Rick, you have a phone call. " … "Hi , It's Dick Smith" My dream was coming true as we talked for over an hour. I became a special effects makeup artist for over 35 years now, and Dick would answer any question that ANY of us had, day or night. He was the greatest makeup artist who will ever live, not just because of his talent. His free sharing of information caught on, and all of us, because of one man, all over the world would share information. THAT is how we are at the point we are today with innovation and the state of the art. Dick gave us every technique and material that all of us STILL use to this day. His Blood formula is used in most films as are all of his other techniques. I'm so thankful to have known him.

Dick Smith and Rick Baker had the most special friendship that life could give. This event had nothing to do with show business, it was an expression of true love and gratitude between family. Things that matter and that mean something. Friendship, achievement. Sincerity. Rest in peace, Dick.

@bamissue - Moving the Lifetime Achievement awards to a seperate event is one on the Academys best decisions. It gives an entire evening over those being honoured - not a 12 minutes slot in between commercials on the main show. They get to have a sit down banquet with food and drink. They also get to invite lots of family and friends - not just a few AND they get to go to the main show as well - enjoy it without making a speech. ALL of those honoured in this way have said the much prefer it.

Such a joy to see, and moved to tears, of course. For many, many of us, our minds and hearts were captivated early on by Dick's artistry. His generosity and willingness to share information has left its mark on every makeup artist I have the privilege to know. I bless his memory.

Thank You Dick Smith for your wok and mentoring what many critics say is the greatest makeup artist of the modern era in Rick Baker. What a great individual and great teacher you were..

Dick Smith is my hero--the master and genius of moviemaking magic! He paved the way for so many great makeup and FX artists of today and is well deserving of this honor. Years ago at Comic-Con, I got an opportunity to relay a question to another master, Stan Winston. Mentioning that one of my heroes was Mr. Smith---who Mr. Winston also admired--- he proceeded to give me a 20-plus minute answer about what the future of SFX would bring to the craft that's gearing more and more towards CGI.

My little Do-It-Yourself Monster Makeup Handbook is still my makeup bible. Thank you, Dick Smith, for sharing your knowledge with the world and making our lives richer because of it. I'm so glad he was able to see and take in some of the love we had for him. He was always so humble. In his lifetime, he was The Godfather of Makeup. For me, he will always be The Master.

My love of great works of imagination - sci-fi, horror, fantasy - eventually led me to my career as a VO actor. But growing up I had another ambition, and that was to be a special effects make-up artist. This man was the reason why. Thank you Mr. Smith for being the master illusionist behind some of the greatest cinematic magic.

Nobody, and I mean nobody deserved it more. If everybody gave back the kindness that Dick gave to people in his life, I think it would be truly overwhelming. Not just talented, not just visionary, not just hard working, not just a legend......he was just lovely. A lovely man. How anything like The Exorcise make-up came from him, I don't know :) Because he was a weaver of fantasy, a shy person who hid behind personas, he had mischief in him :) It's awful that people must die, but he touched many people, through his life. Me included.

He was a true innovator - of materials and technique. Tom savini will he known as an artist who could make the unbelievable believable by utilizing the actual actor. Rick Baker will be known for creating illusions that transform in one continuous take. Finally credit is given where credit it due.

Dick Smith is also responsible for creating the frightening image of the little girl in The Exorcist. Which is the woman beside Rick Baker 0:18. So the creepy face from the Scary Maze game is created by the genius Dick Smith!

Take note, everybody, that Dick Smith is the man responsible for the head exploding up in Scanners (1981)
@Valkonnen Жыл бұрын
No actually that was NOT Dick's work , although he did the vein effects at the end of the film. The exploding head was by Stephan Dupuis. Gary Zeller , the Special Effects Pyro guy pointed a double barrel shotgun at the fake head which was a thin plaster shell with a latex skin of the actor and filled with blood filled condoms and stuff from the craft services table, from behind and underneath and it blasted it realistically.
