In real life, Maggie was one of Emily’s closest confidants. She would carry letters back and forth between them so they could communicate; it’s likely she did know about their relationship. Sue’s children would do this also, her middle daughter has publicly stated they were in love. She wrote an excerpt in her book about it. I don’t think sue kept it a secret from her family at a certain point. It’s likely most of the family knew as well, Austin and sue never divorced, but we’re not together for some time. Austin had a very public “affair” with Mabel Loomis Todd for quite some time, and another woman for a short period of time. They even lived apart from each other for a while. Emily and Sue were together for the remainder of Emily’s life, just in private. After Emily died, sue worked for YEARS making sure her memory would live on by gathering all the materials she had to organize a book with Emily’s poems. If you read the book “Open me Carefully” it has wonderful material on these two. One of the greatest love stories never told.

Oooook, it’s time, everyone. It’s time to talk about EmiSue. I’m so freaking excited while writing this paragraph! About the conversation itself there’s not much to say, because both Emily and Sue state facts that we have already discussed, but still… why not? Let’s say a couple of words about it as well. Hailee and Ella’s chemistry in this scene is almost scary, because they deliver their lines with such an ease that it’s hard to believe that those two aren’t real. Sue’s the first one to talk, understanding immediately why Emily’s furious. She felt her lover in the library and, while it can seem absurd, when she actually meets and sees her like that, she realises that it was all real and that she’s in trouble. Although she tries to explain herself to Emily, at first she can’t do it, since the poet’s anger is so biting and strong. More than anything, though, Emily’s words are surprising to Sue. She thought she should’ve explained herself for “stealing” Sam, but her friend makes it clear that she knows that even her infatuation for him was Sue’s fault. Therefore, all she needs to understand is why she wanted her to feel like that. Sue crumbles at last and confesses that she just wanted to stop feeling. Not love nor grief. She just wanted to stop feeling altogether. And Emily was making it impossible. To those who have never read the poet’s verses or letters, Sue’s words might seem exaggerated or cruel, being them compared to venomous snakes… but trust me, they’re not. Let’s take for example the poem “She dealt her pretty words like Blades -“ that Emily quotes in the scene. In this poem, a woman’s words (probably Sue’s) are so hurtful that “Every One unbared a Nerve-/ Or wantoned with a Bone”, just like a sword would do. How intense and powerful is that? Now imagine this kind of energy in poems regarding Death, Love, Nature and everything else. It’s a lot, especially for someone like Susan that was dealing with a lot already. Still not convinced? What if I tell you that even Emily knew of how intense she could get? In fact, in the famous “Open Me Carefully” letter, she wrote to Sue: “I need you more and more, and the great world grows wider, and dear ones fewer and fewer, every day that you stay away - I miss my biggest heart; my own goes wandering round, and calls for Susie. […]Susie, forgive me Darling, for every word I say - […]”. As you can see, then, getting overwhelmed with this is more than possible and Sue’s words make perfect sense under this light, in particular for her that would’ve erased every possible emotion from her heart a lot sooner, hadn’t it been for the poet, who’s the only one capable of making her feel something at all. By her own admission, that’s what she’s always wanted to accomplish. To quote Sue from season 1, without Emily she: “Might as well not exist”, since that a life empty of feelings is meaningless. No, to be exact, it’s not even life. Season 2 Sue, after that terrible blow of the baby’s loss, desperately tried to convince herself that she was ready to give up being alive and this is why she did everything she could to push Emily away. But it was all useless, of course and even Emily is aware of that. She’s also aware of being Sue’s connection to life and it makes Sue mad at first that she can’t hide anything from her best friend… but it soon becomes clear to her that it’s better to admit that than to lose Emily. Jeez, her declaration of love and Emily’s following realisation that she’s not lying to her anymore gives me chills. I don’t think we’ve ever witnessed the poet to be that vulnerable and you can see it perfectly in their kiss. I’d suggest that you go listen to the song playing in the background of that moment. It’s called Violin Tsunami and Kishi Bashi wrote it thinking of rebirth and healing after a disaster, which fits perfectly our favourite couple. Let me leave here for you the final verses of that small masterpiece: “One day you will follow at the sound of laughter One day we'll fall in love”. After this long analysis and before I can take my leave, I’ll write here some interesting facts from Emily’s life and from the show: - Ella revealed that she and Hailee spent many hours acting out the confrontation scene (even the buttons on her blouse forced them to do many takes) and that in the end they were exhausted for all the crying. She also added that they were incredibly satisfied with the result; - In a recent event, Ella also revealed that the EmiSue scene in the dining room was improvised; - The scene itself, with Emily sitting on her father’s chair, symbolises her gaining the power that she, as woman, could never have had. The setting (the dining room) was, however, inspired by some sort of modern revenge that Emily and Sue could take on Austin. In fact, in real life that room was used by Emily’s brother as a room in which he could meet Mabel Loomis Todd for their sexual encounters, as Maggie admitted in the famous trial against her; - Not a fact, just a clarification: no, Maggie wasn’t at home while Emily and Sue were making love. As she states when meeting Bowles, she probably left to meet her brother; - When the scene in the conservatory opens, you can see Sue muttering something. People tried to understand what she’s saying and it probably was something like: “I think we broke the pots” O.o . - Last but not least: there’s a beautiful bts pic of Ella and Hailee in the greenhouse, smiling and being playful in front of the camera. I’m done once again, gentle audience. Thank you so much as always for reading. See you when season 3 begins, Martina

Hiii people, I’m so freaking excited. Episode 10, finally! We needed this so much, didn’t we? Adam probably was the one needing it the most, but the journey to this episode was so long that it took a toll on my sanity as well. Are you ready for a new comment? Let’s begin, then. Oh right... guess who needs to split the comment again? Me, of course. If you can't find the second part, try changing the filters. This episode opens with most of our characters getting ready for Billy’s christening. To be exact, it begins with Austin and Sue talking and from their conversation it’s quite evident that they’re not on good terms. Austin is of course mad at her. For the cheating (that at this point he probably knew of since episode 5, when Sam was invited to stay at the Evergreens for the night) yes, but mostly for the baby they lost and he has no trouble whatsoever in telling his wife that Emily knows. Emily that now Sue wants to see, because, thanks to Mary, she finally understood that facing her feelings will never be as scary and painful as ignoring them. At the very beginning of the episode though, she still feels like pretending. In fact, she tells Austin not to forget that he’s her husband and not Jane’s (with whom he clearly has a lot of chemistry). Why does she do that? In my opinion, they had put on this act together and it was useful to both of them. Not only it was the best way to ignore the evident lack of love in their relationship, but it made them both respectable in the eyes of others. So, in the church Sue thinks she still has to pretend… but Austin clearly wants to stop and she is perfectly fine with that. She’s taken aback at first, but she’s also calm and probably happy for him. Actually, she’s relieved, because him kind of accepting to love Jane during the mass gives her the freedom of pursuing her own happiness by looking for Emily. Before we move on, I’d like to say a few words about Austin: what happens in that scene in the church is really sad, if we think about it. He could’ve had it all, had he been more mature in season 1. Jane has always been in love with him, but she wasn’t as challenging for younger him as Sue was. Marrying her made his younger self happy but condemned him as an adult to a life of partial happiness only. And, although real Austin was kind of disgusting, it can’t be denied that he probably suffered much like he does in the show. He did have little arguments with Emily about Sue, then was lucky enough to marry her and, in the end, he realised there was no love for him in their relationship. Pity is that he mistreated his own children by rejecting them as if it was their fault that he was miserable, which is honestly horrible. Let’s move on now to Emily and Sam. Damn, Hailee was so amazing in that moment. I felt Emily’s rage during the whole argument and it gives me chills every time when she shouts: “I had an empire!”. There’s so much to say about this, so I’d better begin. First of all, Emily keeps, at least when entering the parlour, considering Sam the sun. In fact, she refuses to look at him, fearing she might go blind. As we know, Emily’s eye inflammation forces her to stay away from intense light, which I think it’s interesting when reflecting upon Sam’s role in this story. Being in the light is also a way to be visible to others and that’s why the editor was to be seen as the sun. He indeed was making Emily feel seen, kind of taking the place of that darkness in which she was being forced into, both literally and figuratively. Slowly, though, our poet realised that lack of light doesn’t always mean imprisonment or abandonment. Being in the dark or invisible, on the contrary, can be freedom and safety, especially in the case presented in the show. In other words, if Sam at the very beginning became for Emily a source of light thanks to which she could grow and feel love, in the end he’s the exact thing she should’ve avoided in order to preserve her eyes and therefore her health. In my opinion, this parallel between the two very different perspectives gains even greater meaning, when reading the poem “Before I got my eye put out”, where the narrator is happy to have lost their sight, because the world and its immensity would be too beautiful to handle for it. I know, you’ve heard that title before. Where? Well, it was episode one of season two’s title. Want to know something funny? This poem, if we had read it, would have warned us against Sam by telling us that it’s safer to look at things with our soul only, because the eyes would be in danger with the sun. Ah, Alena Smith, you genius… you love foreshadowing so much, don’t you? In any case, dear (not so dear) Bowles isn’t the only one Emily’s mad at. When she finally feels like confronting him directly, she reveals that she’s perfectly aware that Sue’s just as guilty as he is for putting her at risk. I dare say that Sam, in this season, has been more of a spotlight than the sun, because Susan made sure he could illuminate Emily for reasons we’ve already discussed and the poet is now able to see and admit that. But that’s not the only problem for her, is it? Surprisingly, we can read more into her heart thanks to Sam that shifts our attention from fame to love, even though he has got the wrong idea. While it is true that the real problem is Sue, it has nothing to do with Emily being jealous of her with him. It’s quite the opposite, to be honest. Sure, Sue gaslighted Emily into trusting that snake and hurt her brother, but what’s worst for Emily is that she witnessed the love of her life sleep with another person in front of her (ok, not exactly in front of her, but it’s a bit like that). So, I know that you’re waiting for me to talk about THAT part, but I can’t really do it before I talk about Nobody/Frazar. Frazar Augustus Stearns was a friend of Austin’s that died during the Civil War in 1862. He lost his life too early and his death deeply touched the Dickinsons, becoming one of the symbols of the pain brought by the war in Emily’s letters and poems. While true that he died for a right cause, in this season he represented the risk of being exposed to a cruel and sometimes even lethal world. A world in which, if you dare to fight without hiding, you can be shamed in the best of cases and destroyed in the worst ones, most times just because of humanity’s ignorance. I truly loved the message he delivers in this episode, which is not to hide like cowards and do nothing, but to fight for what’s right in secrecy through the beauty of words and especially poems. Don’t give people the satisfaction to use what you say and write in newspapers for their own glory, but show them the way by telling your truth from your dark place; a place that they can’t reach and therefore alter.

Omg finally got a chance to watch and yeeeees!!! I cannot type fast enough, this is going to be long lol this ep is literally EVERYTHING!!! The build all season led to one of the greatest ship confrontations I've ever seen. I always, without fail, get CHILLS during the EmiSue fight. It's incredible. Hailee and Ella are unmatched, just un-fucking-MATCHED! That chemistry is just off the charts. It rumbled, and rumbled and rumbled, till finally a glorious and epic *BOMB!* The tension throughout that scene was just so perfectly reflective of both their characters arcs this season and getting to see both their perspectives on what it was like for them to bury those feelings they have for each other deep down, and try and remain "sisters" without acting on their true feelings, was just so masterfully crafted. They said everything they needed to say for all those pieces to finally come together. I loved how they call back to that scene in the library, but from Sue's perspective, and it's true what she says, it's only when she *feels* Emily, when they lock eyes in that moment, that Sue actually feels anything, physically and emotional. It literally had nothing to do with Sam. She just wanted to feel something/anything and she just simply couldn't without Emily. And finally just stopped fighting it, stopped trying to keep it at bay and hold it in anymore. Even Emily saying Sue practically forced her to have feelings for him, is just so true, coz she didn't really have any for him, but only felt like she had to or was mean to because Sue was so insistent on it, to the point Emily convinces herself she does, even when everything in her was screaming she doesn't. All she wanted was to share her love for Sue *with* Sue and when she couldn't, lost herself, and let other people tell her what she was feeling or what she should be feeling, yet feeling none of it. There's so much pain, not just from what happened, but from the fact the world they live in had forced them to push each other away for so long, completely losing themselves in the process. Neither could truly be who they are without the other. Like they're the truest definition of soulmates. For me I don't even find them being together as "cheating", because they were together *before* Austin, they've always been in love with one another even when they tried to play the roles society had assigned to them, and Sue only had to be with him, A) Not to be penniless and starve, and B) It was literally the only way she could've stayed in Emily's orbit. She could've married anyone, but chose Austin because it would forever keep her close to her soulmate. A double-edged sword, in and of itself. I am 100000% convinced Maggie was Hogwarts house elf-ing all over that house! She prepared the decadent spread in the dining room while they were upstairs, she sorted out the bath while they were in the dining room, cleared up after them so no one saw anything while they were in the conservatory lol like Maggie really went about making their day seamlessly magical. She 100% knows everyone's business and she says it herself, a good maid knows how to be invisible. And that whole ass house got to witness EmiSue unchained #BLESS The Nobody arc was literally my fave thing about the season aside from EmiSue. It was fucking genius how it ties into her poems/inspiration/desires that she just couldn't yet articulate because of bloody Sam, but it slowly just ate away at her all season long, manifesting and taking a more definitive full-bodied shape, the more she came back to herself. Ugh it was brilliant! And we finally get rid of two douche canoes in one sweep. Goodbye Sam, goodbye Ship, hope to see you NEVER again! The way Sam goes off on Emily, in her own house, like GTFO dude, he's lucky Maggie didn't come at him with a frying pan, I certainly would've. That man grated all my nerves all season, just the sight of him now triggers me lol And on to season 3! As bittersweet as it is being the last season, I cannot wait going on the journey with you again!!

LIsten. I got to the Dickinson party late. Like didn't find it until season 3 was already finished (which turned out to be good for me because I got the binge all three seasons in about 2 weeks). But this. Your review/reaction....unless it's Hailee herself speaking, I don't ever want to hear anybody else talk about this show but you. Your reaction is giving me EVERYTHING.

No no no… season three is fantastic. Shows the struggle of the family, fortitude or woman in the era, the angst of the on going war, and explores the finality of their love. I absolutely love your videos - they make me relive episodes with such emotion, most of all laugh out loud!!! I was wondering if you have considered watching/commenting on Gentlemen Jack. I think it would be interesting to hear your take on the show, Ann lister herself and their relationship. I know it’s a depart from your regular show type (younger content) but it is such an important beginning point for LGBTQ+ relationship (first known lesbian in England and marriage) in the 1840-50’s and is still celebrated to this day. Just a thought for future content and a different from your normal. I’m so glad I came across your vids. So many laughs and smiles you have brought!! Keep up the good work, mate!! TC
