The Bouys were from the Scranton/ Wilkes Barre area which was known for coal mining. I grew up in Scranton and remember when this song first came out on the radio. It was so catchy and so gruesome but they played it all the time. We knew it was about cannibalism. Another song about Scranton is Harry Chapin's "Thirty Thousand Pounds of Bananas" which is a true story.

I was a little kid when this came out,, and it was a HUGE thing when it was released. It even made the news... This was a top 20 hit on Billboard's Hot Hundred. It was a very controversial hit, that once the public figured what it was about, some radio stations stopped playing it. But before all the controversy, it was on heavy rotation on radio stations i listened too. It probably would have gone to number one, if stations hadn't pulled it... I even owned it before knowing what it was about. Needless to say, my mom, threw my copy away when she discovered that I owned it....

A rather creepy song, but written by the legendary Rupert Holmes who went on to write mystery novels and Broadway shows. And of course gave us "The Pina Colada Song" though his deeper album cuts are where the real treasures are.
@bradsmack14 жыл бұрын
Bingo! Rupert, as well as being in the Cuff Links prior to the Buoys, also produced records, including Barbra Streisand's 1975 "Lazy Afternoon" Columbia LP. Babs had heard Rupe's 1974 Epic Records album, "Widescreen," and dug his cinematic aural pastiche, in his production, arrangements, and songwriting, and asked him to produce her next album that followed the release of her "Funny Lady" soundtrack album. Songs to dig up by Rupert (Daniel, and/or his viewers) include "Him," and "I Don't Want to Hold Your Hand," a clever parody of the Beatles' similarly titled classic, but with an original less-ecstatic bent, but usual beautiful melody and intriguing chord changes by Holmes.

@IllumeEltanin4 жыл бұрын
Great suggestion for Halloween! Be certain to do both Home By the Sea and Second Home By the Sea. The song is very often uploaded truncated, and you do not want to miss the instrumental break and conclusion of the suite. I personally like this extended version, which is about four minutes longer than the combined suite is normally. I think the only difference is the verse tacked on at the beginning, which is repeated later on, so if you can't find lyrics for the extended version (I couldn't), you can still use lyrics for the two songs and keep in mind an additional refrain was added at the beginning to extend it. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5SwaZ2VotBlsMU Here are the lyrics to the standard suite: www.lyrics.com/lyric/36395668/Phil+Collins/Home+by+the+Sea-Second+Home+by+the+Sea

LOL, it definitely wasn't Halloween music! I went to college with Bill Kelly, the guy with the long curly hair and the knee-high suede boots. (King's College, Wilkes-Barre) He often played acoustic versions of Buoys songs for us in the cafeteria. You have to understand this came from Northeast Pennsylvania where the long history of deep anthracite coal mining figured large in the consciousness of virtually everyone. Mine cave-ins with many deaths were commonplace historical facts we all had to live with. In later years the story emerged that Timothy was the miners' mule to soften the blow. That album cover shown in the video was actually a very good album. I still have my original vinyl I bought in the early 70's. (Yeah, dude, I'm THAT old!) There are a lot of great songs on it. IMHO the best one is "Give Up Your Guns [and face the Law]" also written by Rupert Holmes. You would enjoy checking that one out! :)
