I take it as a mirror image Neil sees himself as the old man and the old man as him Young. I've heard that Neil kept the old man on his ranch as the caretaker till his death. Which to me speaks a lot of Neil's character✌️♥️

II feel confident that when he wrote "Doesn't mean that much to me , To mean that much to you", that he wasn't saying something negative to his audience, but rather saying that he was committing to not chasing or being swayed by fame. He was saying that he was going to stay grounded in himself and his music. We certainly can now celebrate that he has lived his life this way and we can all benefit from his body of work.

Great reaction! Back in 1978 when I was in graduate school, I came home for lunch and in my mailbox was a cassette tape made by my friends back home. They knew that I loved Neil Young. Still do. The first song that they played for me was "Old Man." It happened to be my 24th birthday. It brought me to tears. Next was "Heart of Gold" followed by ""Southern Man" and ended with a very long version of "Down By the River" with a never ending ending. At the end of which, they all yelled "Happy Birthday" to me and then needled me by yelling "Neil Young sucks!!! We did these songs for you, buddy!" Now, I'm the "Old Man" watching you react to one of my favorite songs. These same friends of mine wanted to play Neil Young's song "Hey Hey My MY" at my wedding 40 years ago (I'm still happily married). They wanted to play it as I was to walk down the aisle. [You should react to that song.] It's wild and raw. I think that's why they wanted to blast it at full volume in the church. The Priest nixed it, saying it was secular.music and not in the hymnal. With a lyric like "It's better to burn out than it is to rust" with full distortion at full volume (it was grunge before there was a thing called "Grunge"), they all thought it was the perfect song to send me off to wedded life. I recommend you checking out his website Neil Young Archives. He's a great dude and from what I've seen of you, you seem like a great dude far beyond your years. Love your reactions and dissections, Dicon.

Harvest was one of the great albums from the early seventies. My favorite NY song is Sugar Mountain. The Ranch Foreman comes with the ranch...included in the deal...the buyer is responsible for his well being. Quite common 50+ years ago in the west. ps, Pocahontas is one of his classics...the marlon brando reference cracks me up every time.

This was from 1971 so Neil is about 26 years old in this. It's a full set on a BBC program so he's talking to a British audience which is why he says, "I don't know if you have things like that here." at the first of the clip. The whole concert from this show is on KZbin (see link provided) and he's playing mostly songs from the album "Harvest" Great songs like "Heart Of Gold", etc. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2fZoWR7gtOkntE

This was written in 1971 released 1972. In the film Heart of Gold, Young introduces the song as follows: About that time when I wrote ("Heart of Gold"), and I was touring, I had also-just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time-I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today. And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avila and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, "Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?" And I said, "Well, just lucky, Louis, just real lucky." And he said, "Well, that's the darnedest thing I ever heard." And I wrote this song for him.

Hello Samsbro, now you seem to be someone who knows what I know!!!! I have been a NY fan since I was old enough to listen to music!!! Youngest of six kids, is me!!!!! My oldest brother was in Vietnam and we played him home by listening to all those songs you mentioned and many more over and over and over again!!! We would sit in front of "back then the old cabinet stereo and vinyl albums" and I was maybe 9or10 but I loved to sing!! And I promise you I KNOW EVERY WORD TO EVERYONE OF THESE SONGS!! I AM NOW 60yrs AND STILL KNOW EVERY WORD!!! I did indeed sing my big brother home safe and sound from all that ugly and violent shit that should have never happened!!! But, you put these songs in motion for me again, and I can't wait to get all my NY out and smoke a fatty and take myself a trip down memory lane!!! I cry Everytime because of the meaning this has to me.... But I cry harder for all those who's story didn't end like mine!!! Bless you for bringing this to me again!!!!! I AM LISTENING AND I AM SMILING!!!!!!!!!.. NEIL YOUNG YOU ARE TIMELESS!!!!!

Neil Young, the conscience of a generation. He was all about the music. He played with several bands. They would start to do things for commercial success and Neil would be like, it's about the music, I'm out. This was about the ranch hand on his place. The old man lived the rest of his life out on Neil's place.

This was probably early 1970’s. He had been in Buffalo Springfield earlier and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young-both amazing groups. Singers in the 60’s and 70’s had to be able to sing and play in person virtually as well as they did in a studio because concerts were very up close and raw. Musicians had to be very talented and very real.

This concert must have taken place about 50 years ago, if you can believe it. Neil is in his 70s as of 2020. There are two musicians generally credited with creating the laid-back, southern California Folk-Rock sound: Joni Mitchell and Neil Young... and both are Canadian. They are national treasures North of the 49th parallel.

🌹Loved Neil since he came on the scene in early 70's when I was a young teen. He always felt like an old soul and it's ironic that he uses the word old often. He could really rock in his later LP's, too. Bob Dylan had a big impact on singer's styles. No longer needing the perfectly standard voice. Tom Petty and Neil come to mind right away. Bob (at 78 now) released a sound this year called Murder Most Foul. Highly recommend you check that one out -the lyrics are intriguing and it is to do with the murder of JFK. I can always find it on utube. Just love your channel, comments and interest in music which was way before most music gadgets were available. Pure talent.

Ranch hand, old, worked with his back & hands and really still had nothing. Along comes this kid that can afford a $350k property (my parents middle class home around same time Neil bought the ranch, cost $12k in one of the most expensive states, for some perspective). Neil is telling him yeah but we are both the same, alone in paradise. Way I always took it. We all can find something to bond us if we look hard enough. Love Neil, his voice, words, playing, activism and attitude. Southern Man next, please.

Just found your videos today. I like your format. When you were going over the song facts for this one I could not help but think of another by Neil Young, "Sugar Mountain". Perhaps it complements this. I'd say there are other connections as Joni Mitchell wrote a response to Sugar Mountain in "The Circle Game". Just thinking of other connections in that Joni Mitchell also wrote the lyrics to Crosby Steel Nash and Young's "Woodstock". All worthy songs.

So many great things one could say about Neil: his songwriting, his performance, his politics, his dedication to music, but let me just mention one thing and that is his lyrics. Most of his songs are quite simple, but sprinkled with lines that are ambiguous but at the same time drip with a surprising meaning. I don't know how he does it. "Blue, blue windows behind the stars..." I have no idea what those words mean exactly, yet they most powerfully land.

It's vital to remember the context in which this song was written: the younger and older generations were pretty much at war. To me this is a song of reconciliation, that tries to defeat the stereotypes and misconceptions that define what seem, at the surface, to be opposites. It illustrates essential commonalities in the human condition, and will played and sung and loved by people long after anyone any of us alive now know has gone from the Earth.

It sounds perfect because it's Neil Young. He is a far bigger legend on his own (often with Crazy Horse as his band) than CSNY as a group, and you know how great they were. Glad you liked it.

Neil Young. The "Godfather of Grunge" made "unplugged" popular decades before it became popular.

The fine, fine music of my youth. Time is fleeting. Yes, Neil Young has a "good" voice! This was 1970'ish! Break out of your box - explore the music of 66-77.
