So many vocalists from great successful bands started solo careers in the eighties and were successful to greater or lesser degrees. Some examples of successful ones are Steve Winwood (Traffic), Sting (The Police), Don Henley (The Eagles), Peter Gabriel (Genesis) Robert Plant (Zeppelin), Ozzie (Black Sabboth), Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac), and Phil Collins. Collins was @perhaps the most successful and became known as “the voice of the eighties”. Phil also played the drums on Robert Plants first two solo albums and toured with him on his first tour after Zeppelin in 1983 and was very supportive and helpful in showing him the ropes of starting and running your own band. A generous gesture.

timeless. Phil Collins brings everything he learned from Genesis, all the passion, drama, and emotion musically, and distilled it to this magnificently powerful piece of art. What staging!

The stagecraft of this performance is so flawless. You could write a master's thesis about it. The tension building and building. The twilight blue flooding the arena; the spotlights that look like a prison outbreak. Legendary bassist Lee Sklar going full Gandalf. That eerie guitar keening from far away. The presence that Phil Collins is addressing is absolutely there, in here somewhere with us but just out of sight. We can actually feel it in the air of that theater, that night. Some shit is going down and Phil is having none of it.

The decision to stretch out the intro to layer in each individual instrument line separately in what added three minutes to the song and made this live version extraordinary so as to become legendary. I cannot think of a live version of any other song in concert to match its epic staging.

I have a feeling when things are semi normal again and you're driving is a thing for you, you'll be setting a record for going to concerts lol.. I'm kinda looking forward to that happening because I know how much you'll love that. Collins actually did much of this solo work between Genesis albums. When Peter Gabriel left they were auditioning for a new singer and they just realized while he was coaching the singers trying out that he was better than everyone who auditioned so that's how he landed the lead singer spot. He pretty much didn't leave them to go solo tho. Peter Gabriel did go solo after he left ..and his live shows are like nothing you'll ever see. He puts more sight and sound into a show than anyone. I actually think the video you described of "Genesis riding bicycles on the rotating stage" was probably Gabriel - solo playing the song "Solsbury Hill" (a song about him "traveling" away from Genesis"). kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZrQfaiFiruersk The Secret World Tour show has videos on KZbin..The song "In Your Eyes" from it is one of the most uplifting things I've ever seen in music. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6exZ3d_fLV8gK8 As for Phill Collins -two Genesis songs - "Mama" and "Home By The Sea" (both parts) will have you at full volume on your headset! :)

Yes, I thought the same thing, that the image may have been Peter Gabriel. BUT Phil has a couple of concerts in the round. I remember how he literally jogged around the stage singing. Pretty crazy incredible. Genesis also did another very 'Collins' song in "Please Don't Ask" A very emotional song that is one of his best.

I agree 100%. From the video I've seen on YT, Phil looks like he's on death's door, and anybody whose ears are not dulled by sentimentality would have to note that he really cannot sing all these great songs properly anymore. I did log on to check and see what tickets might be still available for the local show, and was amazed to see a lot of great ones on the main floor, in front of the stage, awaiting my MC or Visa. Then I checked the pricing: $975 per ticket, although those tickets did include a lot of perks beyond just a seat for the show. But it's a free country, even at $975 per ticket, and people who can pay the tariff to show up and say good-bye to one of the greatest bands of their lifetimes are welcome to do so. Applaud a little louder and longer to add my accolades as a double on top of yours, if you have decided to go. Phil announced he was all done performing in public a couple of years ago. He's always been demanding on himself as an artist and a performer, and this tour, if I had to guess, is not so much about grabbing one last handful of money, but put together primarily because fans have demanded it of him. So, hats off to Phil for being willing to go out onstage now, sit in that chair, and try to sing as best he can given he debilitated condition. It probably hurts the artist within him to do so far more than how it hurts the fans who remember what he used to be.

While I prefer the studio take, I do really like the intro to this live version. It sounds like mid-90s Orb, with the phaser sound on the synth. I'm sure you'll discover them at some point, but I can argue that The Orb are the most important and progressive band of the 90s. It's a hot take, but once you discover them, you'll kinda get what I'm saying. Thanks for the review!

Those lyrics.....? Personally I think Phil may be being a bit ingenious about them. He went away on tour & when he came back his marriage was clearly over. My guess (& only a guess) is that when he first came back, he briefly met "the gardener,/pool guy/tennis trainer/decorator," whoever. Once he understood the marriage was over, his anger was targeted at the guy - "I've seen your face before, but I don't know if you know who I am". The song is openly driven by his break-up, but I suspect most of the anger is really directed at the guy who he thinks caused it!

You know he had to have worked that out, plus his sense of drama is so strong (from acting classes?) He does this thing all the time with his live Genesis and his solo concerts. He teases you by grabbing the mic at the last second. Check it out. Flawless timing (but after all he IS a drummer, timing is everything). LOL
@rarmccoy
@rarmccoy 2 жыл бұрын
He knows where he needs to be in relation to the drums at different points (landmarks) in the song. I was an audio tech for four years (then later an audiobook technical editor, plus I've been a lifelong musician myself) and my boss was a roadie for a number of big name touring acts. I've watched this performance and other live versions of this song and at specific points in the music, he is always at the same distance from the drums, no matter which stage or layout it is. Aside from his knowing his step size and pacing, the sound check, dress rehearsal, and general blocking all help get that sorted out. I can't quite make it out in the Paris live they use here, but in a couple of the outdoor daylight ones, there are tiny placement marks on the stage that he hits at those particular soundpoints. Honestly though, after all those years, I think they were more for reassurance/backup than anything. Phil was such a pro and this song is/was performed so often, I'm sure the slow walk was second nature to him. Or, like one of my other favorites (an outdoor concert) years before this one, he just walked out and sat down on the end of the stage with his legs hanging off, white buttoned up shirt open at the collar, looking for all the world like an accountant, until he got up again, meandered a bit, sat down again, then got up and moseyed over to the drums - while hitting those same placement points. 😁 Such a loss for future generations to not be able to see Phil do this live in concert anymore like this, but his son Nick is a phenomenal drummer and you can see the pride in Phil's eyes as he sings and watches Nick do the drumming he can no longer do himself. 💞 🥁 🫂 🥰

Saw Genesis earlier this week in Birmingham, UK. Their first gig in 14 years. Huge ovation when they walked on. 15,000 of us roared. I cried numerous times - wept like a baby during the finale of Carpet Crawlers. Their music has lost none of its power, Nic Collins on drums is sensational, and the lighting/staging is extraordinary. Regarding Phil, yes, his vocal strength and range had been diminished by ill-health, but there is now added vulnerability and poignancy. A concert with overwhelming emotion. If anyone is hestitating whether to see them on this tour, just go. The chance will never come again.

Nothing sounds better than a pissed off Phil! He also acts out the song really well. His facial expressions, his body language, and his intensity, convey the anger and emotion in the song just as well as his voice and his drums. And of course, we have to talk about the drums. Has the ever been such an epic mic drop moment because of a drummer? I personally don’t think so. Lots of fantastic drummers, and drum solos, but the way Collins comes in with such anger and power is unparalleled.

Phil has never left Genesis, and his solo career has run parallel with the band. Genesis played live in Manchester, UK, just last night (and will again tonight), with Phil on vocals. As to the meaning of the lyrics, Phil has repeatedly stated that he doesn’t know what they mean, and that they just spilled out of him. Anyone who claims to know for a fact what they are about is wrong, but we can all shoot a movie in our minds to this soundtrack, and that’s why it’s so great. It’s a song that’s unique and very personal to millions of people, all of whom imagine something slightly different when they hear it.

I had the pleasure of seeing Peter in the round many years ago at MSG, such a great show. But it had a moment that reminded me of a Spinal Tap moment. Daniel, great job! Unfortunately, Phil Collins took a serious fall and had the after-effects of a surgery, so he said in a interview that he is unable to play drums anymore. He is using a cane, and having trouble holding it. He passed on to his son the post of drummer for the current lineup of the Genesis band.

I'd recommend Mama from Genesis, a great song. For me, Phil Collins is one of the greatest vocalists, not only drummers.

When Phil is going up the stairs, but then turns full to the crowd and sings "I remember, don't worry" is so cool because you just know that a significant percentage of them are concerned that he might not get to the drums in time.

I tend to wonder if there were so many dislikes of this song/video because for a long time Phil's music was everywhere. He had hit after hit after hit after hit. I tend to wonder if people were getting tired of Phil. I think that people just wanted to dislike it because of jealousy of Phil's success and the world was saturated with Phil's music. I still don't understand why someone could hate the song but to each his/her own. I have always loved his music and I always will. Phil is a HUGE Talent and that cannot be denied. He is Legend!!

The use of this song in the Miami Vice episode [as Crockett (?) was driving in the car] had to be the most masterful use of popular music ever used in television.

I like Peter Gabriel SO much better than Phil Collins. He’s amazing. Check out his first hit Solisbury Hill (video that combines decades of live performances); In Your Eyes (Secret World live video); Biko

@@EdwardGregoryNYC yes, I’m not taking away from Collin’s talents, especially his hit songs like this, live, and his mad drumming skills. But it’s a matter of taste, and I enjoy Gabriel and was much more aware of his music album after album. Collins is what I heard/hear on the radio not what I chose/choose to listen to. I love so many musicians plus I have always and still keep up with contemporary stuff so I can’t say I listen to Gabriel that often. But he holds a place in my heart.

Masterful is such an accurate description. Phil Collins inhabits the songs he performs. You feel it. For me this is one of the best performances by anyone anywhere. The tension builds and builds, the suspense created is palatable and then the release so complete. I can not watch it enough. As someone said 'This is what sex is supposed to be like' You can really see where his work with Genesis informed this performance. Layering the instruments, building to the climax, waiting until the last second to jump on the drums, using the lights to create the effect and enhance the mood is so Genesis. After listening to this over and over, I believe his lyric is Phil's fantasy about meeting up with his rival and having it out. It is the guy who ran off with his wife that he would not save from drowning. The words and all the angst now make sense. 'The first time, the last time we ever met' Finally, this is from a great Paris concert in 2004 with 'In The Air Tonight' coming at the re-start after intermission (+2 hr concert). Collins' work rate is unbelievable.....even at 54 yrs old!

The song you probably remember is “Another day in Paradise” the song is saying if you have a home and a roof over your head then you are in paradise compared to the poor homeless people living on the street. He donated a lot of money to homeless charities.

Please also consider the idea that so many thumbs down may come from the simple fact that many times radio stations over played a great song like this to the point of driving people crazy to not liking it only because it was so overplayed. Completely agree with the Shock the monkey recommendation...

@@sharonm6262 I just took a look at the listing for the "Miami Vice" pilot out on IMDB. It was only rated 8.3, so I added a rating of 10, which is certainly what I think it deserves. On the subject of music and "Miami Vice," this show was the first thing that ever made me deliberately listen to reggae music. Now there are a lot of reggae songs that I like a lot.

The usage of this song in Miami Vice is a huge part of why people remember it so fondly now. The story of how MIami Vice came to be is worth repeating, as it is also legendary. Promoters of a new TV series don't have a lot of time to convince the big shots with the money to back a new show, most of which fail miserably when aired opposite established winners. I can't recall the name of the guy (Michael Mann?), but when ushered in front of the big shots, he simply said "MTV cops", and the idea got the full backing of the studio. A young Don Johnson was cast as one of the leads, and the rest is history.

It was incredible to find out you are only just turning 18. When I was that age I was in an uptight, repressed family situation. I was not in a position to assert my individuality or express my thoughts freely. It's great that you are given free reign in your family. To be allowed to be yourself is the greatest gift of all. Power to you.

Too much freedom and expressing yourself comes in many forms though, and being 18 in the 60's , with way too much freedom is just as bad believe me. I can look back at it now and thankfully survived it & was able to pass the good and the bad on to my kids as they grew up.
