YES - I hope Daniel noticed - wasn't clear to me if he did - but I feel like that was the best feature of this song -- of course, haunting melody and chorus... but seeing those was... heart-wrenching... and thought-provoking...

WOW! This comment touched me emotionally. I was not aware of this song saving lots of lives. That's big. A heart wrenching song about grief or loss, or anything else. 😢😔😳 I applause R.E.M. Daniel's reaction was handled very sensitive, just like Daniel. A very wise young man. He's freakin smart and very funny and he can act! 😊 I'm amazed he's an actor. 👍 I truly enjoy his reactions! 👋👋👋❤️

Mixed in with the lyrics of the song were the thoughts of the people in the cars. The song was directed to them, to hold on. Everybody in the cars had problems and felt they weren't being heard. I think this was a brilliant way to do the video. I love this song. Yes, it's sad, but it's also uplifting. Thanks for the great reaction and dissection of the lyrics.

My beautiful friend Meredith chose this for her funeral when we found out that her cancer was terminal. I sat with her while she w as in a coma at home the night before and held her hand and told her how much I loved her and that I’d be back the next day. My husband walked in from work, I was waiting for him so we could go to her, and he had already had the call that she had died. I knew before he told me, just by his face. We got into the car, her family wanted us, and this is the song that was on the radio. I know it was for me, to tell me that she was ok and around me. She died at 34 in 1997, leaving 2 beautiful girls. I still miss her every day of my life, and she sends this song to me at various times. Darling girl. I love you.

You’re a Georgia boy, no? R.E.M. is from Athens up the road from Atlanta. During my CNN days I saw them play at a frat house. There’s a book called COOL TOWN about when Athens ruled the roost and was the center of the college rock universe. So many great songs this iconic band has in its catalogue.

Saddest song I've ever heard is "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan, but this song has been known to bring about the ninjas with onions, too. This is one of those songs I'll listen to when I want to bring the hurt and pain to the forefront--to really feel it. For me, if I'm in that kind of emotional pain, I have to just go through it, and the choices are going through a LOT of it in a short period of time or a little bit of it over a much longer time span, so I choose the former and this song helps with that.

I used to listen to this song when I was your age. I was picked on all the time throughout school. This song, while talking about sadness and pain, gave me hope in those times. Thank you, Daniel, for taking me back to those times when music gave me strength when I felt weak. I think this is a song of encouragement and hope. It's actually a happy song. Cathartic and empathetic.

R.E.M. was a tremendous Athens, Georgia band, very creative and badly underrated; Michael Stipe is a flat out genius at writing lyrics. In addition to Everybody Hurts, their best known songs are probably Losing My Religion, What's the Frequency Kenneth, Man on the Moon, and It's The End of the World. Shiny Happy People featured vocals by Kate Pierson, from the other Athens Band, the B-52's. These are all excellent introductory songs. You may get hooked on R.E.M.

So true. I remember that. Kicked them down a few notches for me for sure. It was just about the time I was about to spend limited disposable income to explore. Recall determining not to invest funds or time after that... And I'm not a huge huge Beatles fan. Tons of respect, but I grew up with it and radio played them so much, by my teens, I had already gone deep with them and looked toward different groups. Found The Who and went nuts, then discovered Rush and Jethro Tull, Floyd, Boston... Beatles got left behind. BUT they shouldn't be dissed. REM has their place, and I will enjoy learning more. Only know the hits.

The lines at the bottom are the thoughts of the characters that are being shown at that moment. So when they show the singer on camera, the lyrics are what he is thinking, so it matches. For everyone else being shown... When the other people are being shown, the lines are their thoughts like "No one can see me." or "Why are they fighting again?" or "Why should I stay alive?" (paraphrasing, can't remember all of the actual ones)

My 16 years old niece died of an OD last Friday, some found her in a dumpster. She was raped by her father repeatedly when my sister caught him. Last January I was attacked by a stranger in the woods, I was badly hurt physically and the bruises are gone but my soul is in a very badly hurt. My younger nice (9 years old) tried to kill her self and she’s in a coma, the doctors are not optimistic. My sister is sedated all the time. I don’t know how much more I can hold on. My Phsychiatrist sees me once a week and I’m surrounded by social workers but it’s not the same thing to hold on when I don’t have friends (the people I know are judgmental and the last one I thought was my friend said it was my fault (being beaten up) because I went to walk alone in the woods. I apologize to share my horrible life with you but it helps to at least being able to talk about it. How can I hold on when my entire world is falling apart? Love, Lu

Ooh, the great "weeper" of the 90s. Designed to kill off any party ;-) Went down especially well in combination with Radiohead... But yeah, it's quality! REM were huge in those days. (And another example of a lot of rock music being not exactly happy in the 1990s). A similar sad yet comforting song from the 80s would be "Don't give up" by Peter Gabriel (feat. Kate Bush). And with a slightly cynical attitude: "Hold on to your friends" by Morrissey (controversial guy, but has some magnificent songs).

REM, imho, is definitely worth paying attention to. They have a lyrical, playful, experimental style with poetic sensibilities and consummate musicianship. Shinny Happy People is a sardonic wonderland. Stand, and, It's the End of the World as We Know It, are essential. And, Losing My Religion, is an anthem of Enlightenment. I saw them open for the Talking Heads in '85. Good show.

@willcool713

@@chac65 I always took it as walking the line between a totally sincere, upbeat, crazy-positive vibe, and an utterly scathing, sarcastic condemnation of the very same thing. The problem, I think, is that people don't generally recognize the sarcasm and take it as an upbeat anthem. For me it fits both the intention and the hypocrisy in the dogma of positive psychology and sings to a part of me seldom recognized. Art means what it means to people, sometimes -- maybe even often -- having more perspectives than the artist realized or intended. Leonard Cohen's, Hallelujah, is another such song that has taken on symbolism that he never intended. Often that's the mark of great art and artists. I'm not saying, Shinny Happy People, is a masterwork, but for me it evokes a sentiment I don't frequently find expressed, and I revel in it.

Whilst on the subject of sad songs, maybe try Steven Wilson (ex Porcupine Tree)? Welcome to the REM rabbit hole. Some songs to suggest. "It's the end of the world", "Swan, Swan H", "World Leader Pretend", "You are the Everything", "Man on the Moon", "Losing My Religion", "Love is all around", "Exhuming McCarthy", "King of the Road".

Earlier the better for REM in my opinion. “Life’s Rich Pageant” LP was my life for an entire year. Man in the Moon is killer too.

Great perspective from a younger generation. You are so correct, the song is heart wrenching but ultimately uplifting and so positive. Hold On', it gets better and it's worth fighting for is the primary message. As a 70 year old guy, It is so refreshing to me that you open your soul to the past and it's musical roots. I am a huge fan of your commentary. YES was my life in the past and to this day addicted to Prog. Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Airbag, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson etc. Keep it up, thanks and all the best to you and your family.

@@wallyboy6666 R.E.M. was my high school soundtrack... my drama teacher was obsessed with them so their music was in every play in some way. But that album from top to bottom is my favorite!

@@doobernow :) They are so good! Was afraid I would make my kids sick of them from repeated playing of my CDs. (I'm 58 now) But luckily they are still big fans. (Although, my son said that he never, ever wants to hear another Fleetwood Mac song again! Lol!) Thank you for the reply. Have a pleasant day. :)

REM is a great band. Their first four albums are all tremendous. After that, they were more hit and miss for me. This song is an homage to the old Boudleaux Bryant-composed song "Love Hurts," which was originally a country song, but was turned into a rock hit by the band Nazareth. My favorite version of "Love Hurts" is sung by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. Cheers, Daniel.

My absolute favorite group of the 80's and 90's! Michael Stipe's voice is like an extra instrument. I fell in love with them after seeing the video "Losing My Religion". Every song on "Automatic for the People" is actually very good, and worth listening to. Another song I love by them is "Night Swimming", not sure why, it's just great. By the way, the phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate." It has nothing really to do with religion. Loved your reaction to "Everybody Hurts". Perfect!

Sometimes the local metal/hard rock station plays REM's "The One I Love." The local rock station will play "It's the End of the World" and "Losing My Religion." Most of their stuff is too rock and energy draining for me. Someday, maybe he will get back to metal. Apparently the people in the video decided to get up and leave their misery behind them. However in reality, they likely would have cursed the situation in which they found themselves symbolized by being stuck in traffic and go to see what is causing their problem only to find a gruesome vehicle pile up with severed body parts and burned bodies where they would have been in another minute. After all, they were only inconvenienced in traffic. They regain perspective.
