I learned Pitman Shorthand in 11th & 12th grade at Bok Vocational High School in Phila., PA, graduating in 1967. I always excelled at it and I use it, at the age of 74, to this day! I've always loved it and have dictation records I've used over the years to practice and/or keep up my speed. I would sometimes write what I hear from TV commercials or shows, just to keep in practice. I also use it at work (yes I'm still working, out of choice), I use it when I take a phone message also. I used it all through my pursuit of different degrees in college, in fact, I had too many notes! This past weekend I used it while taking notes for an organization for which I'm a member (14 typed pages). The "commercial course" I had in high school served me well over the years; it was a very good experience! I don't think most of today's K-12 students have the discipline, focus or dedication to learn shorthand today. Pitman, in my opinion, is the best!

Wow!! This is beautiful 😍 I hated shorthand writing back in secondary school, but got to love it in the university. I studied office technology management, so shorthand was one of the courses I had to study, and now I love shorthand writing a lot. Learned it on my own when I was at high school in the 70s. Got a textbook but modified a lot of things to make it easier for me, so my system was one of a kind. It helped a lot when I was at the university, still have some notebooks with lectures, but now I can hardly read what I have written. My roommates hated me because they couldn't read my writings. 😅

I've been using Pitman Shorthand for 30+ years and I love it. To speed up the dictation I rule a line down the middle of the page so it takes less time to get back to the start. I love Pitman Shorthand and it's great to see others learning it. I'm so pleased. :)

Actually this dictation was pre.planed and the obtainer was well in the knowledge what would be dictated, means he made practice on this exercise previously, thereafter record it, shorthand writer is the one who does not previously know the dictation paragraph, which is to be dictated.

Instead of using pen I think it is better to use Apsara dark pencil. We have thin and thick strokes to differentiate the strokes. And one should take everycare for proper writing of strokes otherwise its meaning changes.

You can use pencil if you are at the beginner stage, but if you want to write a 1000 word passage at 110+speed then you have to use a pen. Pen is more slippery than pencil.

Years back, when I learned Pitman New Era, it had to be done with a pencil to get the dark and light lines. You seem to be taking dictation with a gel pen. It's ages since I've done any shorthand and I've forgotten most of it.

Actually for beginners it's good to use pen for differentiating strokes for light and dark but once when you have completed your basics, you can use pen when you are writting in 100wpm

Thanks for your appreciation. Actually, in higher level there is no light or dark stroke, or even vowels. In 120wpm speed you cant put them. So, the pen is more preferable than pencil.

I came through this time and situation, I know how it feels. Ohk, first thing first, steno is also a study (or subject, from which you can get a job) You should maintain time for this too, while you maintaining your college and other classes. I don't know what do you mean by other classes, computer or singing or art and staff..and all that And the most important thing, don't give up. Yeah, you can postpone steno for some genuine reason for a period of time but in total don't give up. Plz

This is something I learned in business college but I think it was another form of shorthand writing. It's still crazy weird to me how to do shorthand, someone taking dictation and shorthand writing, it's a complicated skill to learn and I'm scratching my head like I still wouldn't understand all of that, lol. I had shorthand and dictation courses for 2 semesters in college/ business school, the most frustrating course I've taken because it is what it is another form of writing that I had to be taught and get thru it.

Our lecture is leading us to dictation shorthand but it seems like our stethographer secretary is writing at 40 wpm-not 60 wpm, other than that, may be our chief is talking too slow. There not squiggle lines there a communication for block & standard letters to sent to sender of operations. A copy is always attended for receiver a 3 copy standard, for filing, pleadings, or microfiche.

I read in a book that short hand should be written with pencil to make visible difference between thick and thin lines. With a pen, how do you make that thick and thin lines? Is it a mechanical pencil that you are using?

Yeah, its right. But I believe like any other steno learners that if I can understand the strokes written in pen then its okay to take notes in pen. Otherwise pencil is preferred in most of the time. And one aspect i want to highlight, in profession there's a extra pressure to maintain a pencil. In the other hand pen is easy and hassle free. I am using pen.

When I learned Pitman Shorthand 57 years ago students used a pencil because Pitman has light and dark strokes, and it was best to use a pencil to make the distinction. Anyone who's experienced with Pitman, like myself, can and have used a pen. The context of the sentence dictates the correct wording. The pencils I use to this day are standard/regular pencils.

30wpm maybe… but the higher typing speed you have the more hooked your fingers to the keyboard layout. i type 90 wpm and it took me some time to get used to the stenography layout

Goodness this takes me back. Fond memories. I’m retired now but really loved my Shorthand and Typing years. 140wpm for shorthand and 100 wpm for typing. Years later when my kids were teenagers they’d watch me type and gauge how mad I may possibly be depending on how fast I was typing 😂 Some things you never forget.

Its a phonetic sign language. You know there's no C in shorthand. Shortening words according to sound and write in a special sign.

Many wrong out lines in shorthand are written. Those who know shorthand will very well point out such mistakes. However, video is best for knowing what is short hand and how it is written.

Yes at difficult to learn but once u have passed 120 wpm and typing speed 60 wpm lots of jobs are there and also guarantee but after passing shorthand u have to practice daily for passing written short test..

As far as i know and experienced, there is no specific rules regarding dictation (for the dictator). Some of them will say "stop" at the end of the sentence, otherwise the dictator will take a pause at the end to indicate the stop. I hope this helps to clarify. Thank you

The stroke of 'cost' drawn by you is incorrect. It must have been "k above the line then the st loop will be upward not downward." So many incorrect outlines are there such as fullest, remove, etc. P.s.- The outline of preferring will be p+r hook then f hook then upward r, last dot ing

I stopped practising Shorthand after watching this. Those guys who think its easy to learn in just 3-5 months don't get fooled. Learning is different but writing in 80 wpm & then typing the same on pc is different.
