How are they scammers if these are cases that the producers of Judge Judy find? They don't march in off the street. These are all small claims actions that the producers LOOK for in the court system, then they approach the litigants and ask if they want to be on Judge Judy instead of proceeding in small claims courts, which can take months to get a hearing. So what you are saying is these people sued on the chance out of hundreds of thousands of active small claims, on the hope they will be spotted by the shows producers?

If you watch the show when she say something isn’t right , She believes they are SCAMMERS , just on there for the money ! This case was sketchy ! She paid him cash ??? Took the money out weeks before giving it to him and when JJ called it out , she said “well maybe the dates are mixed up” !!! same thing happened in a Boat case once ! She believed they were all friends just trying to get $5,000 🤷♀️ it happens and this was one !

@@DIDYOUSEETHAT172 The producers look for cases in small claims court and reach out for interesting ones, but the show also accepted applications to have your case heard. So someone looking to scam the show would file in small claims, wait a bit (because as you said it takes months to get a hearing), then apply to be on the show. Once they hear back from the show, whether they're accepted or not, they withdraw their case from small claims. If they don't hear from the show by the time they get a date in small claims they would just withdraw their claim.

It's only a small fee to file a claim. I remember when the show was on air they would provide the link to apply on their website

If you have a checking account, you have the ability to write checks. So, you write a check for $5,000 and then get a receipt afterward showing the check was given and accepted. Who are these people that don't know that? Anything over $500, especially for any kind of mechanic work, should ALWAYS have a paper trail.

It's always interesting how convenient some of these cases are for the exact sum of $5000, which is also the limit that JJ is allowed to give someone. She's good at sniffing out a scam when the plaintiff and defendant are working together for some free cash, as it's paid by the show and not either party. Someone wins 5k on a judgement, they go home and split between them and both are $2500 richer than they were.

Many savings accounts are setup with no withdrawal feature thus an ATM card. The only way you can withdraw from these accounts is going in to the bank or transferring it to another account that allows it. Accounts setup like this encourages saving and prevents the temptation to touch that account.

Excuse me?! Never, ever, EVER give ANYONE a payment in cash without obtaining a receipt with their signature! The other person can easily say that you never gave them anything, and rightfully so, because you can't put someone's name on cash. Write a check and make a copy of it BEFORE you give them the payment. That way you have proof that you did indeed pay someone and back it up with your bank statement confirming that the payment was cashed.

Anybody who asks to paid in cash cannot be trusted because anyone wanting cash is only do it to avoid paying taxes, and therefore already prepared to break the law. Anybody paying 5 grand in cash is surely also doing something shady. At the very least, he is prepared to help someone defraud the government. JJ is right to dismiss without prejudice because she doesn't want to be part of something so underhanded. It is very possible the defendant scammed the plaintiffs of some unknown amount of money, but under the doctrine of clean hands, courts are usually reluctant to get involved in sketchy behavior.

No, JJ is doing the right thing. Without proof of payment, it’s hard for a judge to establish grounds for any judgement. Moreover, JJ dismissed the case WITHOUT prejudice, which means the plaintiffs can try again in a real small claims court, because JJ flat out said that she can’t be sure one way or the other.

I pay everyone in cash and never get a receipt. I can show you a bank statement showing all of my withdrawals in cash. That is proof that I paid everyone in cash for everything. So award me $5000.
