How are they scammers if these are cases that the producers of Judge Judy find? They don't march in off the street. These are all small claims actions that the producers LOOK for in the court system, then they approach the litigants and ask if they want to be on Judge Judy instead of proceeding in small claims courts, which can take months to get a hearing. So what you are saying is these people sued on the chance out of hundreds of thousands of active small claims, on the hope they will be spotted by the shows producers?

@@DIDYOUSEETHAT172 The producers look for cases in small claims court and reach out for interesting ones, but the show also accepted applications to have your case heard. So someone looking to scam the show would file in small claims, wait a bit (because as you said it takes months to get a hearing), then apply to be on the show. Once they hear back from the show, whether they're accepted or not, they withdraw their case from small claims. If they don't hear from the show by the time they get a date in small claims they would just withdraw their claim.

@@palmz4u To quote the producers of Judge Judy back when. "Researchers, spread out across the country, entered small claims courts and photocopied numerous cases. These photocopied cases were then sent to Judge Judy producers, who reviewed them all in search of lawsuits they believed made for good television. According to the show's producers, only 3% of the photocopied cases were worthy enough for television. f you have an interesting case that makes good television, producers may reach out to you expressing their interest. Producers can find your case because once you file in small claims with the courthouse, the filing information is made public! And they will contact the litigants to see if they would like to participate on the Judge Judy. "

Anybody who asks to paid in cash cannot be trusted because anyone wanting cash is only do it to avoid paying taxes, and therefore already prepared to break the law. Anybody paying 5 grand in cash is surely also doing something shady. At the very least, he is prepared to help someone defraud the government. JJ is right to dismiss without prejudice because she doesn't want to be part of something so underhanded. It is very possible the defendant scammed the plaintiffs of some unknown amount of money, but under the doctrine of clean hands, courts are usually reluctant to get involved in sketchy behavior.

No, JJ is doing the right thing. Without proof of payment, it’s hard for a judge to establish grounds for any judgement. Moreover, JJ dismissed the case WITHOUT prejudice, which means the plaintiffs can try again in a real small claims court, because JJ flat out said that she can’t be sure one way or the other.

They were probably all in cahoots and were going to split the 5K. They're not going to go to their local small claims court.

Definitely a scam on the plaintiff's side. Can't say the same for the defendant since he never spoke. If it was clear that he was in on it, JJ would have zeroed in on him as well instead of leaving him completely alone.

If you plan on winning in court, you need to have your documentation and anything else that is pertinent to your case with you. A smile and a good story doesn't cut it. Otherwise, it's a he/said she/said case, and the plaintiff has to provide a preponderance of the evidence to win.

Ok So many people pay this and that in cash or withdraws from the bank etc. Please the next time you go to walmart or target go get a receipt book. They're inexpensive and you cover your ass and get both signatures for your records. Thank you Judge Judy!
