Critical Role's newest miniseries Exandria Unlimited: Calamity premiered last week. Is it a revitalizing of the massively popular live streaming giant that is Critical Role? Or is the show starting to feel a bit... bloated?

why save.... critical role is doing just fine and doesn't need saving....

Yeah you are totally right. It was a combination of me trying to play the game and be some what click baity, as well as saying that calamity reinvigorated me to catch up on the series. I am still finding that line between interesting title and full out click bait non sense. Critical role does not need saving by any means, but like I said in the video even as big of a fan as I am I still get burnt out and calamity sucked me back in. Honestly in your opinion is the title too far? It is my best performing video, and still I have like a 90 % like ratio, so its hard to argue the tactic. But I don't want to make nonsense content. You are not the first person to bring it up but I figured I would ask your thoughts.

@@thedndgc5403 i'm just some random nerd but for what its worth, its absolutely clickbait nonsense. However, if you intend to make content, thats necessary for good growth. KZbin hands creators a bad hand in that way. Be disengenuous but get good numbers, or be honest and get way worse numbers. As long as the content is honest and nuanced, I don't see it being a big problem. And The video itself is good stuff.

@@thedndgc5403 I will say I really don't like click bait and I didn't watch the video because of it. Maybe you're video is good but I hate negativity and when I saw the title and in my opinion it was an unfair title and wanted to say they didn't need saving. I do watch critics once in a while but when I like something like loved calamity then I try to find people that are as excited as me on youtube. Maybe you would have had even more likes if the title was exactly the way you though in one line then I would have love to ear what was your opinion on it.

@@thedndgc5403 This is the first video of yours I watch, the only reason I clicked on it though is that I want to see other peoples opinion about EXU:Calamity. The title almost made me skip your video though, because it’s nonsense. Makes it seem like you’re just hating on CR because it’s popular.
@Viehdieb2 жыл бұрын
@@thedndgc5403 That's very honest and transparent. Hats off for that. Critters will of course take offensive when suggesting that CR needs "saving", but I think they'll click the video to read comments to see what has been said. Find out the content is actually good and give it a try and so on. "It is my best performing video, and still I have like a 90 % like ratio, so its hard to argue the tactic." I would argue that this is because of the huge CR communitiy starving for CR-content, impressions and reactions. I think this doesn't even need the usual clickblait other than "CRITICAL ROLE something something". If it's CR-related, try a more positive title next time and see how it goes.

Luis Carazo has been on a few ttrpg shows already. Most notably he's Nines Rodriguez in LA by Night which was another show on Geek and Sundry with CR before they also kinda branched off on their own. Brennan, Marisha, Matt, and Taliesin have also guested on it. So he definitely has a similar experience level with this kinda stuff to the rest of the cast.

Correction! This game takes place on Avalir, not Aeor. Aeor was just stuck in my head after brushing up on my CR lore before making the video. Thanks to the people letting me know!
@nicka36972 жыл бұрын
Understandable mistake but of course it allows more room for player agency we know that Aeor crashed and that other sky cities did and we know Avalir is not around any more but we don't know if it somehow escaped the calamity and there are hints in the first episode that this could potentially happen.

As someone who only watched very small parts of CR before Calamity, I can attest that you really don't need to know much at all to enjoy it. I figured out most of the context throughout without ever feeling like I was missing too much information. I think knowing the lore definitely makes you appreciate the gravity of the events more but I don't feel like it is needed to enjoy the show.
@Lord_Godd2 жыл бұрын
They can totally change it. None of it _has_ to be maintained as the existing lore. The events happened and the history was wiped out. They can completely rewrite history and it will just mean that future historians were wrong.

Excellent spoiler-free breakdown! I agree that Brennan (my fave DM) and Lou have incredible rhythm and I've loved them together (along with the rest of the Intrepid Heroes) - they just make me happy. Honestly, you hit the nail on the head with Aabria; I am not a fan of her as a DM, much more so as a player. I'm _SO_ bummed that this will be so short!! And the NCIS guy... I had zero idea he wasn't a CR player that I'd missed over the years. That opening scene, phew. I'm very, very impressed by him! And if anyone wants to see Lou's depth, I highly, *HIGHLY* recommend a Crown of Candy and Unsleeping City on Dimension 20! Love that dude so hard.

I listened to about 10-15 episodes of C1 but fell off because I found other shows more easily digestible. Didn't watch or listen to any of C2 and caught the first two episodes of C3. I decided to watch EXU: Calamity solely for BLM and my god is it fantastic. I've so far watched/listened to both episodes TWICE! The cast it's great. I'm loving Luis's arc and the sincerity with which he plays the character. This cast of characters is so good! They just effortlessly jumped right into the dynamics. Sam and Aabria playing ex spouses is so fun. I think my favorite thing is Travis reacting to Brennan as a DM. You can tell he's loving it. I've even decided to go back and catch up on C3 now because of it.

Great review! One thing. I didn't see the marketing of the show, I was just informed by a critter friend that Brennan was gonna DM a miniseries on CR and Lou was gonna be a player; so, as I huge fan of them from Dimension 20 and stuff, I just started watching it. I have close to no context whatsoever to Critical Role (I literally just watched the first episodes of the animated series) but I had no issue in understanding. The world and characters were presented clearly, even the ones who were a callback to CR previous campaigns like a certain champion. (I honestly understood more from this gameplay than from the Vox Machina animated series.) Watching some stuff online, I saw some critters (or at least some that have watched many episodes of CR) actually getting some stuff wrong maybe by having theories in their minds knowing the lore behind it. So I think it's completely fine to watch this without knowing anything about CR pior. About new people watching any kind of gameplay (especially DnD) for the first time, of course they are not gonna understand how it works, but it is enough to just watch the roleplaying at the table and know that there are dice involved that provide risk etc. That's how I started. I don't think one can truly and fully understand how the game works before actually playing it in first person.
@ashavandoyon93692 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's really so many things they can change that can affect the "modern day" as you worry about. Vespin Chloras' ultimate fate is "known" but the events that sealed it happened two weeks prior (the ritual). Purvan Sol is the only other "named" character we would recognize from lore so far, and as a champion of the Matron of Ravens, we know that if she does not wish him to die, he simply will not. As for the fate of the city, as you've noted, you had Aeor and Avalir confused - and nothing is known of the fate of Avalir, so maybe there is a potential that it could be saved, shunted into another plane, or maybe it it crashes into the Savalir wood in Wildemount as has been suggested by many (due to the similarity in the name). I think there's a danger in thinking you need a lot of lore already to jump into a story... our minds tend to figure out those things pretty quickly, and the exposition and descriptions here have been, likely deliberately, filling in the blanks, much as soap operas used to give you the "recap" via whatever conversation was handy every week so people could catch up if they missed an episode in an era without VCRs and repeats.
@thedndgc54032 жыл бұрын
I was mostly concerned with Purvan, but you are completely right. (SPOILERS CAMP ONE) I overlooked the Matron bringing back Vax, and she could absolutely do so with him, so if the players had asked his assistance and he was killed it still could have gone without breaking cannon. That's a great point. I would still heavily debate running a prequel myself. They have worked out all the details. It's very impressive.

@@thedndgc5403 another fail-safe for that were the timeframe and setting. Brennan took the time to stablish that 1. He isn't the hero he'll eventually become yet (Brennan even broke the 4th wall to specify that he should be around level 8, so much weaker than the party at this point in time) and 2. The culture of the city, including the PCs, have no trust or reverence for the Gods and their servants. He is introduced by being mocked, and some of the party even joins in on that. Half of the characters motivations are directly in opposition to his whole deal.

though I've watched Critical role before, I never dived into exandria lore, so literally had no idea what the calamity was. lmao i learned that vespin chloras was important by seeing a freakout post on tumblr. so i'm actually having a lot of fun watching calamity without lore knowledge. the only time i really felt like i was missing something was with purvan, but it didn't super impact my enjoyment I will say that I don't think it's an entry point for people with no experience with dnd, bc with the characters being lvl 14, they're often doing spells or abilities with the assumption that the audience knows what they are. and stuff like brennan's monologue on clerics in episode 2 doesn't hit the same if you don't have familiarity with how dnd casters are structured.
@martinovallejo2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, at first I considered this a good entry point to d&d because of the energy it has, but as time went on I noticed a lot of the stuff that's presented would overwhelm (or simply get lost on) someone not at all familiar with the game.
@purplepumpkin37722 жыл бұрын
It's probably not a great entry point for the layman... but holy shit... for those of us who experience the trifecta as follows... 1. Play/DM D&D... (I do both, personally) 2. Been with Critical Role since Campaign 1... 3. & who are likewise, familiar with/follow Brennan's games over on dropout via Dimension20... ... This was... ... BEYOND anything we could have ever hoped for. Very few Actual-plays/D&D Podcasts reach the pinnacle of what I'd call a 10/10 story (or in this case, I'd argue ART) ... Which is fine!... Actual-plays, predominately are there to experience a tabletop Roleplaying game with another group of people... To experience their enjoyment of the medium, secondhand! It's a Communal effort at storytelling! Which is... Probably to be honest... One of Mankinds OLDEST artforms... & It's... almost a disposable artform? If that makes sense? And that IS NOT meant as an insult by the way! It just means that in most cases, the game/stream/whatever format it's in... it exists in the MOMENT! It DOES NOT have to exist outside that... & if it's recorded, it doesn't have to survive in someone's heart or mind past the first watch-through. It's just the nature of this type of medium :) It's meant to be fun... Loose in many cases :) It's meant to be a VERY human experience where people take up the mantle of Heroes, Villains, and everything in between... it's living beneath the skin of a person that IS and isn't us... that IS and isn't our most heroic... or sometimes, our most villainous sides. It's a version of us we are either striving to be, or terrified that we may some day become. But the point is.. The journey is what's important! ... but sometimes... rarely... Every so often, SOMEONE rolls a natural 20 with min/maxed Modifiers and Sneak attack damage lol... And we DO get that loose, human experience I mentioned before... But we also... get something else... We get a Mythos, formed mutually between everyone at the table. It's hard to explain... but it's magic... REAL. FUCKING. MAGIC. THAT... is what we got with Calamity. We got the INCREDIBLE delivery and energy of Brennan Lee Mulligan... ... The intricate and lovingly constructed world-building of Matthew Mercer... and an all-star cast of INCREDIBLE, legendary D&D players who ABSOLUTELY FUCKING KILLED IT... There wasn't even a QUESTION. not even twenty minutes into the first episode that I was witnessing Art,,, and most likely, a TPK in 4k and slow motion... Absolutely...FUCKING... brilliant.

Very interesting video. I was surprised to learn that Luis Carazo was playing a home RPG game with Matthew, Marisha, and Taliesin before Critical Role was a thing. He's apparently been playing D&D since he was a kid. He also played a character in Geek & Sundry's Vampire: The Masquerade L.A. by Night campaign. I prefer to think that this campaign is its own thing and whatever happens in it isn't necessarily canon or could be later undone by the will of the gods or something. Anybody who dies could always be resurrected for instance. Or maybe the history of Exandria that has come down to us is just wrong or incomplete.

Post episode 4. Brennan did a great job keeping the story in between the lines and only adding to the lore. Lore that is only known to the players thst are involved. Characters that survive, either NPC/Players, don't know everything and by doing that, it keeps the story compact and yet they did it without containing the characters. Brennan never said no to a player, but made the players feel like they can't just leave, made them feel like that had an obligation to stay.

i agree with this one. the lore of Exandria is rich and flavourful, but it hella helps to uplift interest IF the DM and Players are good as well. all in all, Calamity was such a good bag of high quality mixed chips that it worked (MMs world, BLMs story telling, Lou - Marisha - Luiz - Sam - Aabria and Travis EQ as players). the flaws are noticeable but barely matter. the highlights bring that much light to the cast and story, that at the end, it's a worthy watch.

I actually think it's even more fun to watch this campaign, and watch these incredibly powerful and influential characters, knowing that _none of it will matter._ It sets the stakes from the start and provides this constant atmosphere of approaching doom that not even the many funny moments can get rid off. Yes, it's definitely challenging to play and not something that I'd recommend to newer players, but this bunch can definitely pull it off and it's absolutely riveting to watch. In the game system I play in, there are also some very beloved campaigns that are considered prequels and at least one of them has an incredible impact on the established lore and recent history of the world. I personally only know OF it through in-character knowledge I learned in other campaigns, and have never played it, but I hear there's good reasons why these particular campaigns are so beloved. To me, it comes down to personal and player preference.

I feel the same when it comes to being able to fall off of Critical Role at times. Campaign 1 was so easily watchable and fun, and hooked you so easily, because it was just a bunch of friends hanging out and playing a game together, especially after a certain problem player made his way out. That's why it was so easy to watch, and still is. Since then, I feel they've put the idea of telling this huge, multi-layered, intricate story above trying to just have fun and capture that fun feeling. This, on the other hand, was a breath of fresh air. Brennan definitely feels like he puts the idea of "this is a game about having fun" first and foremost at how he runs things. Sure, he's got an epic, crazy, apocalyptic story to tell, but he's gonna make sure you enjoy every instant of it. Not dissing Mercer, but I do think Brennan is a bit more fun in his approach.

So, I totally see where you are coming from. I thought about it and I think looking at their backgrounds sheds a lot of light. I can totally see if i had spent 5 years watching Brennan and Matt came in, he would seem like this incredible breath of fresh air, just the way Brennan does now.

Didn't know Critical Role needed saving. but I have been loving Calamity. It's definitely advanced roleplaying for experienced players, and Brennan is doing a tremendous job.

I agree with most of your point and that's coming from someone hwho has fallen off of campaign 3.

They can completely rewrite history and it will just mean that future historians were wrong.

Save Critical Role? I wasn't aware it needed saving.

"Just save CR"? I genuinely don't believe it's doing bad at all. The title of your video is kinda triggering tbh. Calamity shed more light on the formation of Exandria and the world we all have the ability to play in. Your lack of insight in the elements you're discussing puts me off enormously, despite you watching CR from C1. I'm sure you make great content and put vast effort in the content you put out. But, this video is lackluster at best

I would highly recommend renaming this video, you have over 15k views but less then 1k likes. I feel you are doing yourself a disservice by keeping the title and wrong locations named in the beginning.

How campaign 2 ended felt rushed and I wasn't for it. I haven't even bothered to watch yes. I am In love with Calamity!

I felt the same at the time, but have since rewatched with the understanding that they were going through a rough transition period of playing as safely as they could, and pre taping. I mean it was anti climactic, but it almost made it feel even more like a real d&d campaign. Not something scripted but something that could end in a less than ideal way. I totally get your point.

I’m not exactly sure what you refer to “bloated” because the show continues to be very excellent. Yes the show is intimidating to watch with it’s very deep lore but none of it detracts the way it is personally handled by the cast and the enjoyment the audience gets from it.
