@robertstephenson6806 I have never seen anyone bow to a statue of Mary. But even if they did, it would merely be the same sign of respect that my husband shows when he bows to his elders. It is laughable to think he is worshipping someone with his display of reverence. Yes, we kneel and pray to God in front of statues, and ask Mary, the Saints, and Angels to pray for and with us, but our worship occurs in the Mass, which is directed entirely towards God.

@@lellachu1682, I understand the reverence or respect angle. We do it all the time with our elders and people in positions of authority. That is completely different than praying the rosary. You are praying directly to Mary. I mean, here is the "Hail, holy queen" prayer when praying the rosary "Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. How can catholics say they are not praying directly to Mary? She is even called an Advocate, even though there is now only one mediator between God and Man, the Man Christ Jesus. Jesus said "Ask anything IN MY NAME, and it will be granted to you". He never, ever pointed to Mary as another advocate. He had every opportunity to do that. Even when the disciples told Jesus that His mother was outside, Jesus stated in Matt. 12: 48 "He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Mary was great, and she was used mightily by God. Even so, she knew she needed a Saviour also. So, we show reverence to her for being used by God in a mighty way, but we never, ever should be praying to her so that "Her son can listen to her and hear our prayers".

@@E-pistol,thank you for the response. I understand that is the position of the catholic church. The carved/graven images that people bow down to of Mary and the Saints are not considered Idols, at least that is what they say. But that runs the risk of becoming an idol. Also, the command is to not make any graven image of things in heaven or on earth or in the sea AND bow down and worship it. I know catholics say they do not worship Mary. I understand that argument. I disagree with it 100%. When you place Mary between you and Jesus, she becomes the mediator. Scripture says there is now only one mediator, Jesus Christ. In the end, when we are at Judgement Day, I don't believe Mary is going to be there pleading with Jesus for you. Scripture states Jesus will be separating the Sheep from the Goats. There is no mention of anyone else there.

I have a couple of problems. The first is that Whether or not it is wrong or not to make a graven image where does it say that we should make a graven image? I do not remember reading anywhere that says people should absolutely make grave and images and that not doing so bad. That being said, wouldn’t it be better to just simply not have graven images just in case? Deciding not to make a graven image obviously does not break a rule that says we should make them. So why the big push to have them made in such an abundance? The second problem is people praying to statues . I have seen some people hold off on praying until they kneel in front of a statue. When Christ prayed, he simply prayed to God, the father. He never held off until decided to take a knee in front of a statue. Furthermore, I do not remember any scripture that says to pray to anybody else but God. Surely wouldn’t Christ was among us he would have told people to pray to the appropriate source for different things, but he never did. I have heard Catholics recommend praying to certain Saints regarding certain topics as God cannot handle it himself and has certain specialist that can take care of it instead. All powerful and omnipresent? If he is then why would I need to take my issues to a saint rather than to him? What is practiced it never stated in the Bible, so how do people know that God truly wants them to do certain things? Jesus Christ was crucified by the religious leaders at the time because he took away their authority. When human beings tell others to do certain things in the name of God, I question it when I never see what they say back by scripture.. How are people supposed to know what God wants us to do compared to what a man wants us to do? I question any religious belief that gives authority to men and not to God. I do not go to a priest to be forgiven, I go straight to God to ask for forgiveness. Wasn’t that the whole purpose of sending the holy Spirit down to earth? There are just way too many things that are done that seem to give authority to men rather than authority to God.

Another reference we can point to is the Catholic Church's Cathecism reference numbers from 2110 to 2141 which talks about how we follow the first commandment. Things changed because the Ten Commamdments were in the Old Testament and then we had somewhat of an image of the Son of Man, when the Word became Flesh. O crux ave, spes unica, et Verbum caro factum est. This is why Jesus on the cross is an important symbol in Christianity. The Blessed Virgin Mary is part of the heavenly court. In a Marian apparation in Fatima, Jesus also addressed the three young sheppards and this is exactly what he told him in regards why he was asking for a particular devotion: Jesus said: On December 10, 1925, to the little sheppard Lucia *“My daughter, the reason is simple. There are five types of offenses and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: - Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception. - Blasphemies against Her Virginity. - Blasphemies against Her Divine Maternity, in refusing at the same time to recognize Her as the Mother of men. - The blasphemies of those who publicly seek to sow in the hearts of children indifference or scorn, or even hatred of this Immaculate Mother. - The offenses of those who outrage Her directly in Her Holy Images. “Here, My daughter, is the reason why the Immaculate Heart of Mary inspired Me to ask for this little act of reparation …”*

And thanks for the kind words! I plan to do a conversion story at some point yes, but have a few projects ahead of that. Tim Kauffman is a master as taking snippets out of context and creating new creations from them. For example he claimed Justin Martyr meant by a trinitarian baptism just a dedication, which is both strange and completely unfounded. Likewise he takes snippets of others claiming the Eucharist wasn’t a sacrifice and that it was the tithe that was the sacrifice, ignoring comments by the same author saying it was the Eucharist itself not a tithe. He’s not quite, but almost, as bad as a Webster or King.

The doctrine of the Catholic Church regarding the use of sacred images, is clearly and fully expressed by the General Council of Trent in the following words: "The images of Christ, and of His Virgin Mother, and of other Saints, are to be had and retained, especially in churches; and a due honor and veneration is to be given to them: not that any divinity or virtue is believed to be in them, for which they are to be honored, or that any prayer is to be made to them, or that any confidence is to be placed in them, as was formerly done by the heathens, who placed their hopes in idols; but because the honor which is given them is referred to the originals which they represent, so that by the images which we kiss, and before which we uncover our heads or kneel, we adore Christ, and venerate His saints, whose likeness they represent."1😆😆 Every Catholic child clearly comprehends the essential difference which exists between a Pagan idol and a Christian image. The Pagans looked upon an idol as a god endowed with intelligence, and the other attributes of the Deity. They were, therefore idolaters, or image worshippers. Catholic Christians know that a holy image has no intelligence or power to hear and help them. They pay it a relative respect, that is, their reverence for the copy is proportioned to the veneration which they entertained for the heavenly original to which it is also referred. Composer, if your definition(s) of 'idol' are to be held as biblical, i.e.: "1) an image, likeness 1a) i.e. whatever represents the form of an object, either real or imaginary" then every Barbie doll MUST be destroyed. Every Statue of Liberty reproduction, every Elvis statuette, every portrait, every photograph, every film or movie, etc. Catholics worship statues!" People still make this ridiculous claim. Because Catholics have statues in their churches, goes the accusation, they are violating God’s commandment: "You shall not make for yourself a graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow down to them or serve them" (Ex. 20:4-5); "Alas, this people have sinned a great sin; they have made for themselves gods of gold" (Ex. 32:31). It is right to warn people against the sin of idolatry when they are committing it. But calling Catholics idolaters because they have images of Christ and the saints is based on misunderstanding or ignorance of what the Bible says about the purpose and uses (both good and bad) of statues. Anti-Catholic writer Loraine Boettner, in his book Roman Catholicism, makes the blanket statement, "God has forbidden the use of images in worship" (281). Yet if people were to "search the scriptures" (cf. John 5:39), they would find the opposite is true. God forbade the worship of statues, but he did not forbid the religious use of statues. Instead, he actually commanded their use in religious contexts! God Said To Make Them People who oppose religious statuary forget about the many passages where the Lord commands the making of statues. For example: "And you shall make two cherubim of gold [i.e., two gold statues of angels]; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end; of one piece of the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be" (Ex. 25:18-20). David gave Solomon the plan "for the altar of incense made of refined gold, and its weight; also his plan for the golden chariot of the cherubim that spread their wings and covered the ark of the covenant of the Lord. All this he made clear by the writing of the hand of the Lord concerning it all, all the work to be done according to the plan" (1 Chr. 28:18-19). David’s plan for the temple, which the biblical author tells us was "by the writing of the hand of the Lord concerning it all," included statues of angels. Similarly Ezekiel 41:17-18 describes graven (carved) images in the idealized temple he was shown in a vision, for he writes, "On the walls round about in the inner room and [on] the nave were carved likenesses of cherubim." The Religious Uses of Images During a plague of serpents sent to punish the Israelites during the exodus, God told Moses to "make [a statue of] a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it shall live. So Moses made a bronze serpent, and set it on a pole; and if a serpent bit any man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live" (Num. 21:8-9). One had to look at the bronze statue of the serpent to be healed, which shows that statues could be used ritually, not merely as religious decorations. Catholics use statues, paintings, and other artistic devices to recall the person or thing depicted. Just as it helps to remember one’s mother by looking at her photograph, so it helps to recall the example of the saints by looking at pictures of them. Catholics also use statues as teaching tools. In the early Church they were especially useful for the instruction of the illiterate. Many Protestants have pictures of Jesus and other Bible pictures in Sunday school for teaching children. Catholics also use statues to commemorate certain people and events, much as Protestant churches have three-dimensional nativity scenes at Christmas. If one measured Protestants by the same rule, then by using these "graven" images, they would be practicing the "idolatry" of which they accuse Catholics. But there’s no idolatry going on in these situations. God forbids the worship of images as gods, but he doesn’t ban the making of images. If he had, religious movies, videos, photographs, paintings, and all similar things would be banned. But, as the case of the bronze serpent shows, God does not even forbid the ritual use of religious images. It is when people begin to adore a statue as a god that the Lord becomes angry. Thus when people did start to worship the bronze serpent as a snake-god (whom they named "Nehushtan"), the righteous king Hezekiah had it destroyed (2 Kgs. 18:4).

Said the guy with an image of a "Y" next to his identity. What a legalist hypocrite this one is! Jesus gave the apostles authority through Peter: Matthew 16:19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and WHATEVER YOU LOOSE ON EARTH SHALL BE LOOSED IN HEAVEN.” And Jesus promises to restore them in all things regarding His word: 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, HE WILL TEACH YOU ALL THINGS AND BRING TO YOUR REMEMBRANCE ALL THAT I HAVE SAID TO YOU.” - John 14:26. Matthew 28:16-20 16 The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. 18 Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, UNTIL THE END OF THE AGE.” Acts 15:20 and 28 but that we write to them to *ABSTAIN FROM THINGS POLLUTED BY IDOLS* _FROM SEXUAL IMMORALITY_ from things strangled, and from blood. . . 28 FOR IT SEEMED GOOD TO THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND TO US, TO LAY UPON YOU NO GREATER BURDEN THAN THESE NECESSARY THings: 29 that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. IF YOU KEEP YOURSELVES FROM THESE, YOU WILL DO WELL.  This is by decree of the Universal Church, not a local church like Laodicea or Thyatira, but for all churches. “22 Then THE APOSTLES AND PRESBYTERS, IN AGREEMENT WITH THE WHOLE CHURCH” - Acts 15:22.  Compare with: o Rev 2: 20 20 Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess _TO TEACH AND SEDUCE MY SERVANTS TO COMMIT SEXUAL IMMORALITY_ *and EAT THINGS SACRIFICED TO IDOLS* o Rev. 2:24 24 “Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I WILL PUT ON YOU NO OTHER BURDEN.  We see the early church was able to bound things and loosen others, like circumcision, and Jesus upholds them.  Therefore, zealous and good brothers and sisters be wary of picking up any verse and interpreting it into your view today as you or a few personally see it. This could be dangerous, especially given Saint Paul's words:  "4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness." - Galatians 5:4-5. In Jesus Christ, peace be with you!

@@bibleman8010 This is a great explanation to a Pentecostal born and raised. I have great respect for all Catholic and Orthodox Brother's who intimately know Christ and walk with the Holy Spirit. My only concern of Icon Veneration, Mariology, and the intercession of saints, are the potential fruits that they produce. I'm not saying Protestants are perfect. My denomination has major issues of lack of knowledge, and dismal teaching within the church, with the only focus being the Gospel and relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Which is great for baby food, but can leave those seeking more deeper understanding of God lacking. However, in my personal life being a protestant minority among Catholics in Newfoundland Canada (so take it with a grain of salt) the kids who grew up with Catholic doctrine had zero relationship with Christ, and the doctrines that they practiced, (like only saying hail mary's, and potentially beseeching other saints) is that they felt further and more distant from Christ. If the Gospel is true how Saint Paul interpreted it and how Jesus spoke it, then the schism cause by Adam is removed. The relationship is restored through Christ, and no Christian should feel too small to talk directly to the Son of Man. And in practice I believe many Catholics globally feel isolated from Christ, or have never thought that they have a personal relationship with God. Which is what Christ restored for us. To me, Saints while I honor their sacrifices and the work they did for the Kingdom of Heaven, they seem like Pokemon Cards, like Saints and their stories are collectables. And while their stories wouldn't be preserved without the practice of the Catholic Church, I as a Protestant would never ask a Saint in Heaven for help, or ask Mary to ask Jesus for help. When I pray I talk to the Holy Spirit to guide my tongue and to give me the conviction to love what God loves and hate what He hates, and then I speak in the name of Jesus to the Father, asking for His will to be done and to align my will with His, and then I pray for those people who need prayer. Much Love and Blessing from God, and one day I pray for a restoration of the bride of Christ.

1. You shall have no other gods before me. 2. You shall not make for yourself an idol. 3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. 4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 5. Honor your father and your mother. 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, wife, servants, animals, or anything else. 1. You shall have no other gods before me: • A devout Christian believes in the one true God as revealed in the Bible and acknowledges God’s sovereignty over all aspects of life. To adhere to this commandment, they prioritize their relationship with God above all else, avoiding the worship of any other gods or idols. 2. You shall not make for yourself an idol: • Christians interpret this commandment as a prohibition against creating or worshiping physical representations or images as objects of devotion. They focus on worshiping God alone, recognizing that He is beyond any human representation or image. 3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God: • Devout Christians strive to show reverence and respect for the name of God. This involves refraining from using God’s name casually or irreverently and avoiding blasphemy or using the name of God in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy: • Christians honor the Sabbath, typically observed on Sunday, as a day of rest, worship, and reflection. They dedicate this day to spiritual activities, attending church services, and refraining from work or other secular activities to honor God’s commandment to keep the Sabbath day holy. 5. Honor your father and your mother: • Christians recognize the importance of honoring and respecting their parents as a reflection of honoring God. They show love, obedience, and gratitude to their parents, caring for them in their old age and seeking their guidance and wisdom. 6. You shall not murder: • For devout Christians, this commandment extends beyond physical killing to include respecting the sanctity of human life in all its forms. They strive to promote peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation, and to uphold the dignity and value of every human being as created in the image of God. 7. You shall not commit adultery: • Christians believe in the sanctity of marriage and the fidelity and commitment it entails. They avoid adultery by maintaining sexual purity, faithfulness, and loyalty within the bounds of marriage, and by respecting the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. 8. You shall not steal: • Devout Christians uphold the principles of honesty, integrity, and respect for others’ property. They refrain from stealing or unlawfully taking what belongs to others and instead practice generosity, fairness, and stewardship with the resources entrusted to them by God. 9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor: • Christians value truthfulness and integrity in their words and actions. They avoid bearing false witness or spreading rumors or lies that harm others’ reputations. Instead, they strive to speak the truth in love and to promote justice, honesty, and reconciliation. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, wife, servants, animals, or anything else: • Christians cultivate contentment and gratitude for what they have, avoiding envy, jealousy, and covetousness. They focus on God’s provision and blessings in their own lives and seek to celebrate and support their neighbors’ well-being rather than desiring what belongs to them.

Indeed. Which Catholics do not do. We use religious art to focus the mind during prayer. What is biblical is praying for the intercession of the saints. Where does it say the saints are members of the body of Christ? Hebrews 12:22-24 pairs approaching the saints with the mediation of Christ. How do you propose approaching the saints if not by prayer? When Christ knocked Saul off his horse, He said "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?" Was he literally persecuting Christ Himself? Christ identities the Church with Himself, so when He says the way to the Father is through Him, He's not excluding the saints, as if the saints are opposed to Him.

The Bible is not saying "no statues or images ever." The Bible IS saying "Do not create false idols to worship as gods." The Bible follows the 10 Commandments by telling Moses to create a graven image for the ark of the covenant. Ex 25:18 "And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat." Then the LORD told Moses to create a bronze serpent: Numbers 21:8-9 "The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived." There is no dancing around scripture, Scripture clearly states that creating images is NECESSARY to our worship. We just can't worship the images. Angels (Cherubim) are below God, so as long as we recognize that, everything is good.

While fairly rational and balanced, as a Protestant I still totally disagree with the Catholic claims here. Firstly it's not about which grouping is better, it's about which was better translated from the original Masoretic text- it's not better because Protestants grouped it better but because they did not meddle in the translation. The group of people that God ordained to be the carrier's and transmitters of His Holy Torah, they have accurately and precisely been transcribing it for millenia. No church has any right to change or modify it. Secondly you showed that praying and adoring is classified as worship. It's true that images that are not God can be made such as cherubim. But as you correctly said if that image is associated as God or a god only then it is a sin. So I have seen many Catholics pray to Mary a false god and the saints which are false gods. If you can pray to something it has godlike powers and is a god. Also Catholics themselves say they are not worshipping the statues, they just adore or venerate them. There is that word adore. As a Protestant growing up in a pure religion I cannot see anything else but idolatry in the Catholic church. Until Catholics take down these idols I cannot worship with them.
@catholicdad7

Few things 1) this is not a translation issue. The exact same verses are in Catholic and Protestant Bibles. It IS a summary issue 2) only one type of prayer in the NT is reserved for God (proseuchomai) but there are at least three other concepts of prayer in the NT where it is directed to persons as well as God and it’s not considered worship. Adoration isn’t given to any statue or image. 3) venerate ≠ adoration

@TeeG, you think you are correct about idolatry in the Bible and you are right about Mary and the saints with the Catholics? No, you're not. I grew up knowing that the Bible is referring to the gods worshipped as idols other than Yahweh or the only One God. I also grew up knowing we don't worship Mary and the saints (because there is only One God to be worshipped), but in the Bible, Paul also says we honor and give glory to those whose honor is due, and Jesus also shares His glory with the apostles. Hence, we honor and venerate Mary and the saints -- and don't worship them. Who else deserve honor as well but those who are our fellow members in the Body of Christ who are now in heaven with Christ, don't they?

I challenge you to go to any civil or criminal court of law right now, and you willl find a document “Prayer” that a lawyer files to a court judge in behalf of his client, in cases that the client’s lawyer wishes to request something from the court judge. Does this mean that the lawyer worships the court judge? LOL, nope! Of course, not! And, yeah, of course, there are already saints in heaven during the apostles time, as mentioned and discussed in the whole of Hebrews chapter 11, after which having said that, Hebrews 12:1 concludes that they are now in heaven as “so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us"... don’t you know this? And oh, you might wanna want to do some research why the “soul asleep” doctrine that you are espousing is a heresy, as even some of your fellow group of protestants consider this soul-asleep doctrine as a heresy as well. And as to "adore" and "venerate," you may wanna know the original meaning of the word “worship" first, too, prior to the Reformation? Go right ahead, do some research, dude. Educate yourself.
