I just bought these. My three year old gets frustrated when trying to color pictures of himself because he can’t find his shade. He was excited to swatch all the colors and found a perfect match in “light golden”. He put it in his “special box”. I noticed the crayons break *easily* . I reenforced the unbroken ones after several snapped.
@hawkeyescoffee63993 жыл бұрын
That's adorable. I never understood how they could have such a wide range of crayons but none that actually matched actual skin shades. I hope every kid can find their skin shade in these, or may be able to at least blend some together to create it.

Practice, and with light.. even.. layering. If you put down too much color, it will fill the papers tooth too much, and you wont be able too add the 2nd or 3rd colors on top. Leave some intentional white showing through on the first layer, which allows the next color to fill those areas in a bit more... and then some final heavier pressure, will help blend them together. And I have red hair (but like this really weird shade and like 2 strands of my hair might look like they’re from 2 completely different people’s heads lol) so I would mix like the yellow and the red and the orange and the brown and everything to try and make my hair color because no matter what it just isn’t right. Of course I said,” Peach or Brown?” “SKIN COLOR CRAYON” after going back and forth for about a minute, she bit my hand. I called the teacher over, as I moved to another table to find out which color she wanted. Definitely a step up from some 9ld discontinued colors like "Indian Red" (which was about as accurate of a skin tone as blackface). To their credit, they don't hide the fact that they made mistakes with that kind of thing in the past. It's part of their discontinued colors exhibit at their museum with historical context and why it was removed
@roobusmcscroobus3 жыл бұрын
Fun Fact: The reason that Indian Red wasn't an accurate skin tone for Indians nor Native Americans was because it wasn't made to be a skin tone at all! Rather, it was made to show how important the color red is to Indian culture, but it was often misinterpreted by children due to the name and time period it was released during. I'm glad they changed it to Chestnut, though.

I wonder if the missing values are just too tonally similar to other colors? Like, it would be great to have a deepest golden and rose value, but if you swatched a deep, deep brown next to another deep, deep brown the color difference doesn't come off? Obviously, this isn't true with skin values, but there's only so far you can go with pigments.
@johndough81153 жыл бұрын
Most of Crayola's pencils, are designed with the idea that most children that are using them... are not very coordinated, and will be pressing quite hard on them. This in theory, would confuse a child, as to why a color looked different when they pressed heavier or lighter... on accident. To avoid this, they have many colors that have a severely reduced level of Pigment in them... so no matter how hard you press down... the color value is not really altered. You can see many of the colors that look nearly identical. If you press lighter with some of the more pigmented colors, you can easily match them... because they are the same color, just with less pigment. And of course... they have limits to the number of colors per packages, due to existing machine designs. If it took 28 colors to make a complete set... but the machine tooling and boxing is set up for 24 or 48... then they will round down to 24, and eliminate some colors instead. Finally.. something else not considered... which also relates to higher level artists.. is that skin often has colors such as green, blues, and purples... due to the veins and bloodlow in certain areas of the body. Our skin is semi-translucent, so the layers, density, bloodflow, and lighting.. all effect how that skill will end up looking. Its never going to be a single block color. Every area on the body, will have different hues and vales. But again, as said.. crayola designs for beginner children.
