Man I love The Philosopher. Certainly speaks a lot in this day and age. There's one thing I live by and it's open minded skepticism. Being open to ideas that other people have, but always remaining a little skeptical. Importantly, doing the work yourself to uncover truth. Direct experience is the key, and is way more fulfilling than holding onto a belief, or disbelief around something. And if you can't experience it directly, it's okay for you to remain uncertain about it. Most the time we accept any answer that 'seems' logical, just so we don't have to live with that uncertainty. The fear of the unknown has a tight grip on us all. Scavenger of Human Sorrow is one of my all time favorites, especially to play on guitar too. Song opens up powerfully, and is strong the whole way through. Lyrically very similar to Spirit Crusher in that there are people out there who like to feed off the pain of others, and enjoy the crushing the spirits of others!

They'll follow and trust anything it's disgusting. It makes me laugh when I see a "punkrocker" with all their little RESIST stickers and whatnot but they're actually for big government and don't even realize it. This song always served as an inspiration for me. I first heard it my freshman year of college right after I joined the philosophy department. I’ve always read the line “the philosopher, you know so much about nothing at all” as deeply sarcastic. Based on his other lyrics, Chuck was clearly very interested in philosophy. What he seems to be commenting on is how people with over inflated egos use important sounding words and ideas to trick people into believing they are smart, while not actually offering anything of substance. It’s the inspiration quotes approach to thinking. When I heard this song, I showed me in just four minutes the kind of person I didn’t want to be, namely some blowhard spouting condescending platitudes.

Don't overlook the fact that in The Philosopher, Chuck also hinted the fans about Paul's sexual preferences, that became public two decades later, in 2014. "So you preach about how I'm supposed to be - Yet you don't know your own sexuality". He probably didn't mean it in an homophobic sense, but to ironize more about the fact that Masvidal is always focused into looking more intellectual and moralizing than what he really is, which is something you can see it on his lyrics, that are needlessly complex to the point they lose all meaning; how can you judge the rest when you are not even honest about yourself, nor you say stuff straight to the face, kind of thing. The lyrics are really powerful nowadays as well, from a political point of view, but that's maybe too polemic for a youtube comment. Good video!
@BerkayVatansever2 жыл бұрын
I've been a huge Death fan for more than a decade now but never knew this song was about Masvidal. Sexuality line makes so much more sense now. I never quite understood that in the past. That's of course not the point of the song but hinting at something like that years before it made public is really interesting.
@blackspitit2 жыл бұрын
why did Chuck write about Masvidal if Masvidal was just a guitar player hired for one album?
@slipspectrum9253 Жыл бұрын
While I never met him, by all accounts of Chuck from people that did he was actually a really nice, down to earth guy, but if he wrote you off for whatever reason, you were dead to him and and he was not going to be nice about it… I agree that I don’t think he was homophobic, but more critical of people who fronted. Paul seems really into a lot of crunchy new age stuff that Chuck may have not been a fan of. I’ve also known some people that lived “in the closet” and they were seriously terribly cruel on just about every level. Even if they came across as nice, they would stab you in the back without even thinking about it. Something about living your life as lie can mess people up pretty bad. Paul seems like a nice guy though, and I believe he and Chuck made amends at some point before the end.
@GraphiteBlimp273 ай бұрын
It makes sense to me it’d be about Masvidal, given this line and how Cynic’s lyrics can be. While that might actually be the inspiration for Chuck to write the lyrics, I see it as a more general point. People who philosophize and think they have all the answers, or think they know best for others, might not ever do the introspection necessary to uncover things as personal as their own sexuality. How can you prescribe to others how to live when you don’t even know yourself well enough to uncover your own sexuality? I think that’s Chuck’s larger point.

He wrote some of the best time signature chsnges ever. Crazy how he was self taught and less than 10 years later was multiple albums deep into creating a genre. Chuck is a legend who should never had passed so early.

Chuck the legend. Have this whole show in dvd but wish relapse or somebody would remaster the video and sound. One could only wish.

On death's second album there is a song i think is called alternating the future. Go through the lyrics in that song, and I'm sure you will be surprised how that song can be seen as prophetic pertaining to our world today with the emergence of AI. Chuck May not have been a prophet but i think somewhere in the depths of his soul,and mind he was savy within the world around him. Love your content on Chuck you really do him justice. You are definitely on point with this conversation.

Death is my favorite band and I always loved how direct Chuck lyrics were juxtaposed with riffs that invites people to introspection and meditation. I think the only band (at least the ones I know) that have replicated this technique almost as good as Death is Blood Incantation.

Shred, your sense of humor is top notch. Dry with just a hint of absurd. Also, you're a hell of a hype-man.

Ok how are you recognizing all these chords? I mean do you have perfect pitch or is this skill learned? If it is I'd be really thankfull if you can tell me at least what to practice :D

This is such a banger song. I used to play this a lot together with my band back in the day. Death has way too many masterpiece songs in several different flavors to pick one that's the best. Every single album has amazing stuff on it.

Nice job, Shred. When you put on the "cans of power" it looks wrong, at least from the viewers' end. The wire usually goes to the left cup (ear). Have you been listening to the songs in the wrong way? Also, check out Fermented Offal Discharge from Necrophagist for some precision guitar work. Here's to you!

I think social media doesn't help when people just jump on emotionally fueled logic. It took me years to realize that I was full of shit and didnt know half of the things I was talking about. Critical thinking, introspection without indulging in narcissism and encouraging people to think objectively is crucial.

You are fast becoming my fave KZbin channel! Awsome & funny as hell content. I love the Symbolic album. The songs and production just nicks it for me over TSOP and mainly because chucks vocals being that little bit lower pitched as well.

Shred. Love your videos. You have an awesome presence and I appreciate the way you pick apart the musicians style and musical "intellect". I understand now why my dad who has been a musician for roughly 65yrs was so serious about theory. That's all bro. Keep up the awesome work. Andy LaRocque had a hand in this song and album, played lead and wrote solos. Along with chuck, gene and steve they made a killer album. Shred. It be nice to analyse other great musicians songs, like peavy wagner in rage, andy larocque in king diamond, kai hansen. Not famous, but HUGE contributions in heavy metal development

I loveeeeee your Death/ Chuck related vids!! That's actually what I've been trying to unlock the mastery of....is Chuck's signature solo scale he plays in most of his songs, that you know when its him soloing. I can play majority of all their riffs/bridge parts but I dont know any scales (especially the box idea of scales) other than that classic blues type scale that bands like Kiss used alot....but I'm trying to learn the Harmonic minor scale. Also the style in James Murphys soloing style he used alot in his early solo works (not sure what scale he used quite a bit) but sounded awesome!! Especially on Spiritual Healing album. But my BIG issue is I'm a left handed player, I'm 32grs old now, I've been playing since I was 7yrs old but all mainly by ear but lacked any technical knowledge on scales, reading sheet music, can hardly even remember the guitar string letters lol....but music comes naturally in ways, but I've ONLY have played right handed guitars played backwards....but couldnt comfortably play any power chords with the strings reversed so for years I could on tune to drop D standard to even play any power chords lol. Finally several after learning that way I decided I needed to reverse my strings so they are strung like a left handed guitar but its,a strat style body so the higher horn is in my way to practice soloing on the lower frets which drives me nuts!! Even tried buying a left handed Ibanez Gio for around 100$ bucks, but realized when the guitar finally came and I put it in my hands did I realized I just wasted my money on another guitar i cant play....(it was another right handed guitar, the dude lied to me and i didn't realize until it came.) I was soo pissed now I got a better guitar I just have to look at but canf play really anything on it because its strung regularly
@danielblake15372 жыл бұрын
P.s. sorry I wrote soo much it was a long story lol but ifs been driving me crazy trying to either find correct guitar tabs or anybody that gets guitar enough,andChucks style to explain to me what hes actually playing. Like even the stuff I can play of his I dont know the correct termanology on what he plays in his songs lol

Perceptions and beliefs can waver wildly from objective truth and morality. Knowledge is key, but test the spirits. The book of 1/2/3 John are a kind of litmus test for certain things.

So many great Death tracks, but I revisit Suicide Machine quite often. Well, that and Genetic Reconstruction and Living Monstrosity. Too hard to choose which is the best. Basically, everything off of Human and Spiritual Healing IMO.

Yes. Sometimes it comes to mind on several songs from different artists recorded in the past, is this just happening in the world right now? Or was it happening allready back then when the song was written? I have a theory of actually music affecting the world in a collective subliminal level that we don't even realize.
