According to Judo Canada it is decided by a point system, with Deguchi getting 2 points for last years World championship and Klimkait getting 1 for 3rd place in 2022. Deguchi is currently ahead on the ranking list and gets 2 for that. And then there will be points available at this years World Championship. So for Klimkait to get the place she will need to place higher at the world championship and overtake in ranking list.

No, when she won Antalya in 2021, she had beaten Klimkait for the 6th time in a row while being the running World Champion in the country that would hold the OG. On the other hand Klimkait had not even won a medal at a WC. Back in the day I couldn't believe Nicholas Gill and his staff dared to compare their "rivalry" to Abe and Maruyama's. That was downright insane and presomptuous to me but it said a lot about how much they wanted to select Klimkait. I had talked about it with reporters from L'Esprit du Judo who were as surprised as me by the way the Canadian staff had operated. Too bad for them, I'm fairly certain Deguchi would have won gold at Tokyo. Anyway now Christa knows that unless she keeps her title at the next WC, no matter how much she wins in GS, she won't be assured to be in Paris next summer.

In the golden score show she said that she needs to be ahead of Klimkait on points after the world championships. That's how I interpreted it

Deguchi just bullied Mokdar. Paris feels like a mistake.

Mokdar is not a bad judoka (just won bronze in this grand slam) but Deguchi has a wonderful control of technique and her state of mind. She is not only strong as a sportsman she is also very strong inside. That‘s the reason why she is the world number one.

In their last 3 fights, Klimkait has beaten Deguchi twice and lost once. It's not quite decided yet. Plus Deguchi trains more in Japan than in Canada and doesn't really seem that keen to truly embrace a Canadian identity. National representatives should be happy & proud to represent their respective countries, but it's pretty clear where Deguchi's loyalties are.

Yeah i always thought degichi moved and trains in Canada. Im Canadian and find it odd an atblete who lives and trains in japan competes for team Canada...she should be fighting for Japan. CANADA SHOULDNT NE A FALL BACK PLAN JUSY CAUSE YOU DIDNT MAKE THE JAPANESE TEAM. If she was training in Canada, her experience training om Canadian soil would be invaluable to the national team. But the only thing Canadian is the 'CAN' on her back patch. Im for Klimkait over deguchi cause of this.

So? In 9 matches total Deguchi won 7 and Klimkait won 2: cherry picking data is not right for evaluations. Look at their match balance percentuals on judoinside or judo data and you'll see who is the more efficient of the two. The Canadian judo federation offered a spot to Deguchi when it appeared she was denied an Olympic spot because Japaneses had another athlete who they preferred (Yoshida Tsukasa) - she fizzled out, didn't win a medal in Tokyo 2020 and I think they regret the decision now . Canada enjoyed a talent molded in Japan , who trains in Japan with, arguably, the most technical sound judokas in the world and has lived her whole life there. I'm not Canadian, nor Japanese, but I would be honored to have an élite judoka fighting for my country. P.s: Klimkait judo is only seoi otoshi and sode tsurikomi on her knees, really tactical, physical and franckly boring.

@@johnpark4924 Firstly her family lives in Japan and she was raised and educated in Japan. Secondly, she gains nothing from training in Canada as most of the top Judo athletes come to Japan to train. In reality, for some weight classes, representing Japan is far more difficult than winning a medal in international competitions. For many athletes, Olympics is a once in a life-time dream. Flag or citizenship is irrelevant for them as it is an individual goal since childhood.

@@yo2trader539so how does this make Canadian judo better? To improve the National team we need world class judoka fighting for us and passing their knowledge to the next generation. Pretty hard to do that from Japan.

But Jessica goes for big throws like seioi nage, rather than playing the shido game. She maybe doesn't win as often as Deguchi, but when she does, its often by a big throw. I wish Olympics would allow 2 competitors from each country but maybe that would be unfair to countries without the resources to field 2 judokas. 🤔
