shabath: to Original Word: שָׁבַת Part of Speech: Verb Transliteration: shabath Phonetic Spelling: (shaw-bath') Definition: to cease, desist, rest . . . rest: cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength. . . ***Exodus 31:16-17 16 Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. 17 It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’ ” . . . Niph`al Imperfect3masculine singular יִנָּפֵשׁ Exodus 23:12 (E) 2 Samuel 16:14; וַיִּנָּפַ֑שׁ Exodus 31:17 (P); - take breath, refresh oneself. . . . It does seem very much that He did rest, and as Exodus says, in a manner that refreshed Him. . What kind of God needs to rest and be refreshed? . . . "Not allah. allah never needs to rest. He is all powerful." . . . Actually, this proves that the God of Abraham who is in fact Triune is the only true God. . . Logically for a God that is beyond time and space, He must also have a way to enter time and space, while also being separate from it. . . A purely one dimensional god like allah would be stuck beyond time and space, and could not create or communicate. And if he tried to enter creation, he would be completely cut off from divinity, and everything would just cease to be. . . The only logical God is the triune, who has the Father; the very soul of the God head who remains on the throne, the Word , who has the ability to become the body of the God head, who is sent into the physical realm to manipulate physical things, and the Holy Spirit who takes spiritual things and transforms them to the physical. . . . This craftsman role of the Word of God is spoke about in Proverbs. . . . ***Proverbs 8:22-31 22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. 23 I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth; 26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, Or the primal dust of the world. 27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep, 29 When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, 31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men. . . . As you can see the trinity of the Godhead works here in the same way that Jesus explained the relationship between Him and the Father when He was here with His apostles. And in the same way that our own trinity works. . . It is the Father laying out the plans, and the Word (Son) who is doing the creating of the spiritual and the physical. . . And we know that the Holy Spirit is there involved in moving spiritual to physical, because of verses like this: . . . ***Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. . . . It was the Holy Spirit that took the Word from the spiritual world into the physical world. . . . All throughout the Bible it shows God entering creation and interacting with physical things in a physical form. Wrestling with Jacob for example. . . . So it would be beyond reasoning to deduce that God did the same when creating the physical world. And thus the physical form He put on would have needed rest, so He would have rested it, and continued His work in His in the spiritual world where He would not need to rest.

Add the Gospel to it as well, I'll even quote it for you. Surah 5:58 O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord Surah 3:3 He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel. Surah 6:115 And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. These verses attest about the Bible authenticity according to the Quran, and since Mohammed, or actually his followers wrote it this down in the 7th century, we can all agree that the 7th century Bible was the real deal since even Mohammed said so right. Well the issue is that since then the Bible 100% didn't change, not to mention that every time Muslims say the Bible is corrupted, according to Surah 6:115 Muslims call the Quran a lying book because since it says God's words cannot be altered then it's wrong every time a Muslim says it's been altered, and if it wasn't altered then the Quran is just a devilish forgery. In either case the Quran is not the answer to eternal life, that's for sure, 100%

When I was a child, God resting was explained to me as comparing to reading music. There is a note that’s a “rest.” It just means you stop or cease. @Sousabird5 күн бұрын
@nielsdekker452 how so? If God creates something, what does the process look like? How would it be best expressed? We obviously don't know, and since the early Biblical authors didn't, they expressed it in language that they did understand. Now the difference between the Bible and the Quran is that the Bible's authors were authors, in the sense that their style, message, place in time, and geographic location are part of their message. They aren't just getting a book beamed down by God to copy. Interestingly, Islam's claim is that the Quran is from God directly, which makes non-literal readings of the natural world and its workings a much more difficult endeavor. And in case you think the Biblical creation being taken non-literally is a new phenomenon, it goes back to at least the 4th century, with Augustine of Hippo, though I wouldn't be surprised if it went earlier. An aphorism that may be helpful, "The Bible doesn't tell us how the heavens go, but how we go to heaven." Just some scattered thoughts. Have a good one.

@swimmerfish345 күн бұрын
There's also a deeply biblical theological theme that begins to be developed here, which you see mentioned in Psalm 95 and Hebrews 4. The rest here is not for God, it's actually for us. God creates eternal rest on the 7th day that we are invited to partake in with him. The seventh day also doesn't have an evening and a morning because the seventh day doesn't end. It is open and available to be entered into through faith. This is one reason why interpreting the days as literal is problematic.

This is another classic case of people missing the context of the words used and applying their own interpretation based on their opinions or non biblical works. Yet according to the Islamic interpretation, he can neither enter into the very creation which he made, and he can’t appear visibly as a man. This man has a really secular view on rest.

Hah, I was just thinking about this this morning. I came to the same conclusion, however I also thought that Jesus saying the Sabbath was made for man to also imply that God "resting" could be simply so that it established a precedent for man to rest on the Sabbath.

GOD rested, meaning HE stops creating, OBVIOUSLY not because HE'S tired, but because HE prioritized to sanctify HIS creations and BLESSING them so that they will be worthy to be with HIM on HIS Sabbath. Therefore, People should start prioritizing GOD aswell on the 7th day, the day of Sabbath.

Can you recommend any good books on properly interpreting the Bible, a Biblical argument for old Earth and one that maybe gets into how it doesn't conflict with evolution? TIA.

My favorite part about Genesis is that God gave us a mandatory day off

I wonder how Paul Williams would react to finding out that the concept that God didn't need rest is not unique to the Quran, but rather reflects a polemic common in late Antiquity especially among Christians and even some Jews is that the rest of God was metaphorical or in the Christian case that it was a polemic against the Jewish idea that God rested to counter the validity of the Sabbath? For example in his homily on the seventh day of creation, Jacob of Serugh, one of the premier Syriac Church fathers, wrote that the reason the phrase was included in the account of Creation in Genesis was a polemic against the idea that God needed to rest and that therefore the Jewish sabbath was not legitimate.

In any of the versions of the Bible that I’ve read, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the statement “needed to rest.“. Again, read first what you seek to criticize, so that you don’t look like a fool when you open your mouth.

God rested- it’s finished if I’m working on a project and it’s done. Then I rest because there is nothing more to add ! I’m amazed how puerile are comments like the one from Paul Williams.

Cease from work here means, he is not creating anything new. All the 6 days he created plants, animals, humans. But on 7th day he created none.

God does not need things, Need is not what drives God to do things. He rested to create an order of days. Genesis 1&2 is God setting up how he desired the universe to work.

Allah can be hurt (33,57); Allah needs help (47,7); Allah is ignorant (3,140-142); Allah needs cash (57,11) Allah and Mohammed decide togheter (33,36), it will be easier for Allah to repeat his creation (30,27), so it was harder for him the first time

From a Christians perspective this doesn't make sense why would a deity need the help of a human in decision making
