Very interesting explore ....beautiful in the snow ...Yes, DDT is poisonous ...an insecticide used in agriculture from the '40's to the '70's when it was finally banned . My Daddy was an Agriculture Agent from the University of Georgia and came in contact with DDT quite a bit as he worked with the local farmers . When he passed away from Leukemia after a 30 yr. career , the Doctors blamed the DDT. We lost him way too soon.

Oh wow, so you're very familiar with this stuff and not in a good way. Very sad and unfortunate that it ended his life sooner than expected, but back then no one probably knew the severe affects it may have had on people. 💙

Jay, if there was an old railroad right away through here, the house could have been an inn of some type, and would kinda explain the outhouse setup. Oh, and by the way, DDT was a pesticide used for all types of pesticides, including bedbugs and lice. It was outlawed in the 60s or 70s because it caused the thining of birds egg shells causing many birds to become endangered, including the Bald Eagle.
@buttonvalley4 күн бұрын
DDT is banned in the US, but still used in some places in the world. It was essential in making malaria an unknown disease in the US. The problem is it doesn't break down in the environmental downstream, and has harmful effects to wildlife, particularly birds of prey. Your finding it reminds me of when I just got married, my new bride and I were cleaning out her apartment to move her to our new home. She rented the ground floor of an older up-and-down duplex. When getting her stuff out of the basement, we found a gallon-size amber glass apothecary jar half full of a powder. The label said "potassium cyanide!" We put it back where we found it.

DDT is still produced in the US, though it's decomposed down into DDD which is used in the treatment of adrenal gland cancer.

That sign in the outhouse Golden Quality Ice Cream. Its from Plymouth. I know you did a video there a few years ago . If you go up one mile from the ice cream stand on the highway there's the remains of another dam there on the other side of the creek. Valve and an iron intake gate. There's also a canal lock down by the river by the railroad bridge that goes over the creek you were exploring. Best time to see it is when there's no vegetation growing otherwise the knotweed hides it.
@JPVideos814 күн бұрын
I remember that ice cream place. Nice little connection to both. Isn't that the google find I just did (the old reservoir)? It was the video before this one.
@EricZolner-zz8bj3 күн бұрын
@JPVideos81 This one I'm talking about is another one. Not too far from where the two pipes crossed the creek. It's up stream one mile from Maureen's. It looks like the bottom part of a valve house and there is an iron gate on the upstream side. This is on the side opposite of the highway. There is room to pull off there. Also of interest in that area is what's called the Rice Dam. Go past the dam that was in your video on the highway, cross the bridge over the creek then make a right on Fedor road. Take Fedor road to Jackson Road and make a right and go to the bottom of the hill and it will be on your left. It's one of the 2 start points of the aqueduct. The other was the big Ceasetown Dam along the highway. Hope this helps a bit.

@@JPVideos81 The dam area is posted to death now, but it's all visible from the road and the parking area. Downstream it's all open for fishing. Nice little double waterfall there too and overall a very photogenic place. Use caution around the aqueduct, the walls are steep and deep. I remember seeing it working back in the day, it looked like it was about 3' deep with water. Some portions were piped and filled in too.

What an amazing roadside finds exploration! Some old ruins and odd finds for sure! The abandoned structure was so interesting, I would have loved to see those books up close and in person and what a big outhouse that was and the sign that was in there was cool. I am not completely positive, but I think DDT is some kind of pesticide that was used way back in the day. It was fascinating looking down into the mine shaft, it's a good thing they built that cap or cover for it. I think they should put a cap or cover over that old well too. Like you said, one wrong step would be very dangerous! I would say that the bridge would be considered a ruin too and another great find. The pipe system ruins are really interesting, and I am looking forward to you returning to explore the other side. Beautiful place! Awesome video JP, thank you! 💙

Jay, Those ruins represent major investments, so I'm guessing it's community or mining related. DDT has been banned banned for a long time, one reason was that bird eggshells would be drastically weakened which harmed species reproduction. Immigrants and other people were dusted with DDT to kill lice and bedbugs, we didn't know how harmful it was. I remember we had it on our farm in the 40's to 60's, it wasn't banned, I believe, around 1970...yikes! Cheers, Rik Spector

DDT was banned due to effects on the environment. Used as an insecticide but then harmful to the fish and birds who ate the insects, notably resulting in the soft shells birds produced that would not hatch. Rachel Carson wrote her book Silent Spring bringing these effects to public awareness. Her homestead is here in the Pittsburgh area with great nature trails and one of the three sister bridges over the Allegheny River is named for her. The other two are for Andy Warhol and Roberto Clemente.

The book was fiction. Her poison claims anecdotal. The science flawed. She's responsible for millions of malaria deaths around the world. "While excellent literature, however, Silent Spring was very poor science. Carson claimed that DDT was threatening many avian species with imminent extinction. Her evidence for this, however, was anecdotal and unfounded. In fact, during the period of widespread DDT use preceding the publication of Silent Spring, bird populations in the United States increased significantly, probably as a result of the pesticide’s suppression of their insect disease vectors and parasites. In her chapter “Elixirs of Death,” Carson wrote that synthetic insecticides can affect the human body in “sinister and often deadly ways,” so that cumulatively, the “threat of chronic poisoning and degenerative changes of the liver and other organs is very real.” In terms of DDT specifically, in her chapter on cancer she reported that one expert “now gives DDT the definite rating of a ‘chemical carcinogen." These alarming assertions were false as well."

@gigicostlow44144 күн бұрын
Some interesting finds. I think the house was actually a store going by the shelves and display case. Could also be why there's DDT bottles there. Was something they sold. Another thing that screams store is the Golden Ice Cream sign in the outhouse. It is still on the hanger which would have been on the outside of the store. That sign is a rare collectable. It needs to be saved. If that was a store that might explain the double outhouse which going by part of the floor being removed looks like someone has done some searching there. It's possible the owner lived upstairs or behind the store which was common. I'm not so sure that was a mine shaft. A few things stand out to me. The thing on top looks like it was used to open and close something. There's sort of a track on the left behind the bars. Maybe there was some sort of panel/door that could be lowered using the thing on the top? Then there's the pipe secured to the inside wall and there's holes along the sides that look like there are pipes in them. I'm thinking it's something like a storm drain? Wow, those nature's tears were gorgeous. Really pretty there. Be cool to go back and explore the other side.

DDT was nasty, the soil was tested for the amount of DDT. If it was over a certain percentage then the land couldn't be used or sold.

DDT doesn't cause health problems ion humans with limited exposure. The problem with it was that it bioacumulates. This means that animals at thje top of the food chain get large doses which have acumulated from all the animals eaten by those below them in the chain.

DDT was used to errradicate Malaria by killing the Mosquitoes that carried it in many parts of the world, but its use was discontinued due to a massive decline in bird of prey numbers.

Amazing how land is at a premium, yet there are thousands of structures, maybe hundreds of thousands, just abandoned and sitting on idle property. Be it private, company owned or municipal, there it is, just forgeotten.
