The question would be can the counterfeiter turn a profit from the card. The reason we don't see many 1 or 5 dollar counterfeit bills is the cost of making it would require massive production or little to no returns. I can see it being easier/cheaper with magic cards but I would side with the other commenter and say they were created around the 30 dollar peak.

I will counter with the scaling and logistics that comes with selling fake cards comes with some hidden overhead but I would need to look into it to state anything definitive

My country's currency, GBP (used in the UK), the most commonly counterfeited was the £1 coin, because yeah, who the fuck expects such a low amount to be fake? Not sure how it is now since they redesigned it and released a new coin the other year. But nobody is faking £50 notes here because they're not commonly circulated (it's our highest denomination) and EVERYONE checks them for fakes anyway.

Interesting detail: The holostamp on those counterrfits all have the Planeswaler symbol centered (freeze @4:16). On real cards the patten is a bit more random and not as consistently centered.

Yeah, also, look at the edges of the holo stamp. On these they look slightly more rough, like the edges of a sticker that was punched out of a sheet and stuck there. While real holo stamps are very flat and smooth and don't look like a little sticker.

I'm pretty sure of the 2 major printers they use currently, one uses blue core and the other uses a more purple-ish core. I was comparing cards today and you can actually tell the difference by the tint of the oval on the back of the card when shining light through it (and then I tore them apart to see one distinctly blue and the other with a more purple hue). Also, one of the modern printers makes the cards much thicker and more waxy where as the other has a more matte finish. Flicking the corner yields different "thunk" sounds, too. The light test works well on modern cards + visual inspection. Fascinating stuff

One correction Rudy. Proxy != Counterfeit. They are completely different. Proxy... a clearly-fake stand in. Not meant to deceive, only meant to be used in play. Counterfeit... a card making it's absolute best attempt to be passed off as a real card. Can be used like a proxy, but more likely made to scam SOMEBODY.

Been playing magic for only a few years now, all proxy cause that’s the cube I was introduced to I don’t want to drop a bunch of cash for cards. I think I have a much more enjoyable time playing with my proxy ugin or karn than I would if I spent 300 for a standard legal deck that I would of had to keep updating to stay relevant. If you enjoy playing magic you should be in favor of proxies cause they allow more people to play and they allow people to build the decks they want to play with, without proxies magic would lose players that really do love playing magic just as much as the people with the real cards.

Very cheap print run to reduce costs, the regular cards were of a similiar quality and they all look like fakes lol. I still have a bunch of commons/uncommons, the artwork is somewhat faded and the colours look washed out.

Useful video, especially the holofoil on the surface not flush. checked some of my 'expensive' cards and all ok except some from 2017 Modern Masters...the holofoil is not raised but seems imperceptibly RECESSED below the surface of the card. Definitively not on top of the card / raised. Anyone come across this?

I got a fake foil misprint in the mail the other day. I could tell right away so I peeled it in half. It had the black core paper. Also the foil part peeled up completely revealing a sticky white surface underneath like it had been glued down. I have noticed a large number of these new foil misprints now on ebay where they are about 20% moved off the edge of the card. I would say DON't BUY THESE! I believe someone is mass printing them on sheets and cutting them off center to make misprint money.

These fakes are really easy to spot I own a bunch of proxies myself and you can tell the Chinese manufacturers make these cards to be distinguishable from real ones. If they made 1:1 fakes they'd just sell them on the actual market as real cards. Their Holo stamps are solid now they're almost indistinguishable from the real ones and it's commonplace for embedded Holo stamps so that's not really reliable anymore. You can't rely on looking at gloss either because you can fix that with steel wool/magic eraser and some patience. Rudy should really showcase the backs compared to real cards because the backs are insanely bad and have been for years. I don't think it's bad to play with proxies in fnm or even in tournaments the game is way too expensive and you should spend your money responsibly rather than 1000's on a children's card game.

Wes Hart You don’t have to worry about literally any card being counterfeited. Arclight Phoenix is counterfeited because it used to be a viable modern deck and was worth a lot more when the counterfeiters started printing them. They do print cards fairly quickly after they are released though, so cards in standard can definitely be counterfeited. However, the counterfeits have gotten A LOT better now. Most of them no longer have the sticker holo stamp and have it embedded in the card, just like official WOTC cards do. There’s two ways to always tell a counterfeit: the texture (it will always be super smooth and waxy) and the green dot test (should see 4 red dots in a “L” shape on the green mana symbol on the back of the card). Invest in a $8 jeweler’s loupe and you’ll always be able to immediately confirm if a card is real or not.

If your stack is so fake, why do you keep them in the hard plastic display sleeves? The card isn't fake until you rip it, so let's see some corners be taken off or something. You have "the best looking fake as a benchmark" outside of a hard case, but the shittier ones in plastic..??? that graveyard pile is fake.

It's an akward situation when you trade for fakes. I don't go to GPs or Magic fests but shortly after one ended all the players from my LGS who went to one had come back with new trades. One person who is very trustworthy had come to the store. We took cards from the others binders and agreed a trade. Whilst desleeving and returning his sleeves I noticed one of the lands were fake. I just told him I wasn't confortable taking it and said they should get it checked out although I knew it was fake. We had someone wander into the store a few years ago who I'd never seen before or since who only had fake cards. The fakes are bad too. Didn't even need to get as far as taking out of the sleeve and feeling / inspecting it. There are two types of people.

What is one or the two savest and easiest ways to see if a mtg card is fake if you are not a specialist/pro but a timmy/noob to identify fake cards you get per mail? I mostly only buy sealed stuff from my trusted seller but sometimes a good offer or a few cheap cards online instead of the 40% higher store price is nice and sadly a must. And I am scared of having fakes. not because of resellling or stuff but I just want the real deal.
