Every once in a while I think about which band from my past I would want to get back together. Then I remember what the recordings of those bands sounded like and I think "naah." I'd rather keep finding people who are better than I am to play with, that way it forces me to improve.

@@jimijackson I feel the same, incredibly angry! I wonder where that monster is now? But as far as a reunion, even a temporary one, sometimes they can be disappointing. And the more you care about it, the MORE devastating that would be! In my mind, The Beatles are the most perfect band there ever was, so I am the perfect candidate for absolute devastation. I finally saw Pink Floyd in the mid 90s, because this part of Canada never gets good shows. My disappointment was extreme! It sounded like garbage, and even the large dose of LSD I took didn't help. It was an outdoor concert on a nice late summer's day, and a large group of good friends walked there. It was really nice. So what could possibly go wrong? The band itself was completely flat, with no enthusiasm at all, and that feeling pervaded the entire venue, so much so that I left before the end. And I idolized Pink Floyd! All of my life I'd been waiting to see them! So I'm glad I haven't had my feelings about The Beatles dashed in the same way. It reminded me of what a friend said when I told her how much I'd love to see my first ever boyfriend, and she said it might be better for him to remain perfect in my mind. Perry Prudhomme (sp?) of Kars Ontario in 1974-75, do you remember Barb, from the small goat farm? I've always loved you, and never forgotten. ❤

Love it Rick - the big difference between today's music and "our" classic rock, as far as I can tell, is the newer folks just don't have the diverse background in blues and jazz like you do that influences their writing and arrangements. I had the opportunity to get together with the guys I played with in the early to mid 1980's (last century lol) - we had moments of brilliance and moments of completely sucking. The bottom line it was a riot, and we hope to be all in the same place again so we can have another great afternoon of fun! Way to go - hope your session with Billionaire goes fantastic - as no doubt it will.
@cattymajiv

And of classical music! I think it added so much more to rock than any other genre did, although all of the diverse influences were SO important! Our music had so much depth. Not every song. Some were just fun, bubble gum stuff, but that was also a big part of it. Rock had some of absolutely everything! Today's garbage music has only 1 influence. MONEY! And nothing else matters to any of the artists that are big, like Taylor Swift and Miley. I spit on them, figuratively. I just can't even listen to it. There are still some good musicians with a variety of influences, but sadly that kind of music doesn't get widely heard anymore, partly because people with talent and visuon avoid the music business. It became such a cold and barren place with nothing but demands for everyone involved to sell their souls. So anyone with a heart, or talent of any kind said "This isn't what I want to spend my life doing!" Because of that, today's young people have mostly not been exposed to anything but the autotune crap that passes for music these days. When Rock started to become Pop with the influence of Disco and Micheal Jackson, the writing was on the wall. Death was approaching. It has arrived a long time ago now. I hope for the sake of humanity that something positive happens in the world of music, because without that form of such beauty, mankind is lost. Sorry to be so depressing, but that is my opinion.

There is still a lot of great music being made but these days you have to look a little deeper than what is currently considered mainstream. Aurora is another example of a current artist putting out some amazing material. I've never had lessons and just recently figured out CAGED up the neck, and a couple arpeggios in C. For 10 years my guitar playing pretty much hit a wall because I didn't understand the neck, but because of you and Paul Davids it's starting to click and I'm getting those feels again like I did when I was a kid. Really enjoy your musicianship, Rick! The way you parse songs from different artists from so many genres is incredible. I especially enjoyed your treatise of Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind", as I am a HUGE Lightfoot fan, and played a lot of his music on stage for many years. Now, as I am returning to my music in retirement, I am especially aware of the nuances of the music, especially as I am returning to the studio to record and re-record some of my own songs. I am hoping they will be successes, if only to have you review them would be a success for me...

I love dissonant riffs. Want a rut buster? Try playing (interpreting) Foo Fighters - "Times Like These" in open D tuning. It seems to my ears anyway, that the song was originally written and developed in that tuning, because of the melody line (Reminiscent of Husker Du/Bob Mold's work. Clue, the cover art is by Raymond Pettibone), and the unique lush, ringing chord voicings and rhythmic possibilities open D presents. You just can't grab those chords in standard tuning. And, any of the Spanish guitar influenced Black Sabbath acoustic songs like "Fluff" or "Laguna Sunrise" are fascinating to approach in open D. There's beauty in dissonance.

I wish Stevie Wonder would do a tour with all of his hits... I love Sting and The Police, but I lost interest in his solo work after 'Englishman in New York'. 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles' is one of my very favorite albums of all time. Just extraordinary, and chock full of my favorite jazz musicians of the time.

I came back and rewatched this video recently as you got me thinking about dissonant chords and it finally hit me - David Gates!! So many Bread songs have the same kind of guitar arrangements you showed here - it would be great if you and David Gates would do a show on this subject- he is in his 80s but I bet once he met you he would get together. Great channel- you come off as very approachable and genuine- keep up the great work man😊

Billionair is running on my spotify playlist for pretty long time now. It 's easy to become a fan and a bit sad I can't join the reunification.

I really hop you guys record an album, or LP or at the very least a single with a B side. It would allow us to see a real world example of arranging an already existing song, preferably one where we have a sketch or demo. And another from scratch. I mean the lyric writing process... these two songs could be a series themselves Also if you capture some snippets from the concert it could really help to know about setting up the audio, the sound board, the influence of the room on the gear... Honestly this can really become a huge stream of videos.

@@cattymajiv I know right? Like how a guitar tone or arrangement changes from a studio to live setting, or pacing or monitor strategies, or lighting, or common volume issues, or rehearsal room strategies, my gosh... I mean, even how the stuff they are composing arranging reflect on what will come later and even if an arrangement is considered impractical because of this. Backing tracks, last minute lineup changes, audience participation... Sorry for the flood, but boy oh boy is there a lot that can be covered. This is why I hope they do at least two songs so we can see at least a difference in approach. If it were 4 it would be even better, chances are we could see patterns emerge and get a feel for what might be an exception. I mean, the fact that billionaire got a chance to gig is quite an accomplishment, but I'll say this channel has really given substance to many of our musical dreams so why not dream a bit more regardless of what reality may or may not have in stock for us.
