Simply rewording somebodies work doesn't make it any less theirs, and it doesn't make it any more ethical, it just means you googled 'synonyms' and replaced or rephrased some things while continuing to steal the main content that the person had spent their time developing

The whole HBomberguy is fantastic because it uses each example to slowly paint a bigger and better picture about the topic before slam dunking somebody in the last half. That's very important to keep in mind in my opinion as it explains a lot of the lines that on their surface sound weird. For example there's no actual question as to why the revision's writing is like somebody on a race track trying to read a thesaurus. A HUGE part of a plagiarist's tactics is to find the absolute minimum amount of rewriting required to convince people that it's now their work. That way, they have functionally stolen another person's idea for profit but given themselves just enough plausible deniability to get away with it. This is basically the core message of the whole video, that idea theft like this is plagiarism and we shouldn't listen when the snake oil salesmen tell us otherwise.

I said this on another video about the matter: The MIC video always struck me as odd, like it was not made in his usual style. It was much more serious than his other work, and while you can say it's because of the subject matter, the Costa Concordia video kinda contradicts this, as it's one of his funniest. Learning about all of this is indeed very disappointing. I don't know if it's a case like what happened to the AVGN or what, but I do wish for IH to make some statement or apology. Nor that he needs to, mind you. In fact from a business perspective it's probably better if he doesn't at this point. Not many people seem to care, and the ratio on his latest video, which came at the same time as the controversy, is still overwhelmingly positive. Heck, I myself am still subscribed. I find it very disappointing, but at the same time, not unforgivable unless it's proven to be a repeated offense. And you know that after the whole drama people are probably dissecting all of his work searching for more instances of plagiarism, working night and day. The fact that the only thing they seemed to find so far were two lines in the Costa Concordia video gives me hope that this was just an one-time stunt. It's still confusing as hell as to why this happened though. The dude is no stranger to showing excerpts of articles that serve as sources to what he's saying in his videos, and in some instances he even made companion FAQ videos to give further context and sources. So what the hell was going on with the MIC one?

I disagree slightly, if two people were handed the same set of facts and told to write a story about it, they would be WILDY different. Internet historian decided to just take someone else's work, run it over a thesaurus, change the order of a line or two, and pretend it was his. If he had written it entirely on his own it would have been WAY more work to write and keep it as interesting and engaging as that article's writing was. If he had just made it obvious he was making an animation and retelling of an article it would be fine. But he went out of his way to make it seem like it was HIS work. He wanted the clout and the ego stroking, despite the fact that it wasn't his. His efforts afterwords make it so much worse than if he just owned up to it. Whatever any of his fans want to say (rightly so sometimes) about hbomber guy, he's kind of got Internet historian over a barrel with a smoking gun here. I'll never be able to watch an IH video again without just assuming it was some other work being read in a funny way. No different than those channels that just read reddit stories.

If this was the case, that he was unaware, most reasonable people would understand. That type of viewers will sing your praises one day, and crucify you the next. After watching his vid with JonTron, it makes sense that he is the furthest from the witch hunty borderline mentally ill viewers who are getting their satisfaction and catharsis from seeing him fuck up, and this is lowkey the best thing that could happen to him. I mean, Hbomb is a very open leftist, so yes there is a bias against the fact that IH is pretty clearly at least somewhat right wing, and a number of his edgy jokes certainly skirt the line to being a bit "dogwhistle-y", but the video is 4 hours long. Over half of it dedicated to the overt, continuous and malicious plagiarism of a left wing queer content creator called James Summerton, and two other examples of plagiarism that were given similar amounts of screentime as IHs was beforehand. This wasn't a hit piece to try and take out a political rival. Rather it was a very real example of what the subject of the video was about. He makes no bones about his dislike for IH, and honestly I think he's being more intellectually honest to be at least acknowledging the fact that there is some political disagreements between them. That's the problem. Do you know that anecdote people share about telling a joke and no one laughing and then someone takes that joke and changes it a bit and everyone loves it? That's emblematic of how important delivery and good storytelling is for any kind of communication. Like, hell, this video itself already provides examples of how the reuploaded version is **markedly** worse than the original, to the point where people noticed and complained about it, so clearly the "amazing script writing" that you never thought about was at least a part of what made it entertaining in the first place.

I think there are very valid complaints against IH and I think the video did a good job showing that; however, after a certain point it seemed like the point of the vid went from showing plagiarism to transform into a 30 minute video of insulting IH for clout imo. When Xeno pointed out that the vid didn't even credit, link, the article as well I think that's a factor a lot of people over look; while criticizing IH this guy is inherently doing the exact same thing by citing the article, word by word in his own, without giving any credit.
@Kori-ko10 ай бұрын
IH's section took up less than 20% of the entire video, so saying the point of the video is for clout due to him bringing it up is just inherently a weird statement to make, especially when the main portion of the video is criticizing James Somerton for plagiarism for 2 hours. IH's Man In Cave video isn't even worth the clout you think he's going for and is just setup for James's section. I do agree the article should be linked in the description (for posterity, not for plagiarism reasons), but that is an extremely far stretch from doing the same thing IH is doing without giving credit. Hbomb went out of his way to take you through the chain of rights for the article and the author, and continually credits Rilley while using examples from it to prove his point. I think conflating stealing the article and trying continuously to hide it against laying groundwork with credit and crediting the article while using examples from it to show the stealing is a pretty disingenuous take.
@didac385910 ай бұрын

The same protections that IH gets preventing his work from being stolen by big companies like Universal is the same right that Rilley has for protection from theft of his work. I feel like most people on IH's side here would throw a massive fit if Universal Studios downloaded Man in Cave, ripped out Internet Historian's brand and ad from it, and sold tickets to the movie theater without ever giving a penny to IH. Saying that the author never came up with the story is a statement that betrays slight uncreatively. When you write a story or essay based on research, it is *incredibly* rare that two people would produce the same story, even if they pulled from the same pool of facts and research. Inherently your experiences shape what you consider to be important in the story, what gets cut, the general direction and flow, etc. There are like a hundred different ways D Day is told despite being an actual nonfiction event. Same for 9/11, Battle of the Bulge, and any (auto)biography like Steve Jobs. Writing is actually difficult to do well, let alone for an hour, and IH apparently agrees because instead of actually doing his own work he chose to steal it.
@dustinhatfield837310 ай бұрын
@@Riptitde777 I guess our opinion differs because my experience with editing has taught me that the amount of work that goes into the editing and visuals is far more than the script is. I don't think many people realize how much time goes into that sort of thing. I would edit 5-10 minute videos and it'd take hours and sometimes multiple sessions over days. And he's editing videos that are feature length as well as creating the visuals to be edited in the first place. Why do you think people like IH and Pint only upload like twice a year? Sure, he should have credited the article and it's weird he didn't. We all agree on that. But it's a non-fictional story, the months of work that goes into the visuals and editing is FAR harder than the hours of research and writing an article about it. I'm just saying I dont personally care and will continue to enjoy his content. Now if IH was a fellow article writer and just copied and pasted this guy's article for a competing website or whatever then I think outrage is warranted. But it's a video on KZbin, not an article. It's like bitching about a movie based on the American revolution because it's really similar to a book that was also wrote about the American Revolution. Sure they are both describing the same sequence of events happen, but in my opinion the two pieces of media that were published are different enough to be their own thing. Regarding the video's script, there's only so many ways two different people can describe a non fictional, historic event. If you asked two historians to tell you what happened hour to hour during the sinking of the Titanic, they are both going to describe the same events. What matters is how they choose to say it. In this case, one person wrote an article, the other animated and edited a video. No idea how this works out legally, but to me, this just feels like an excuse to stir up some shit. If IH did discover this story from that article, yeah he prob should have mentioned it in his sources, but I'd hardly call this plagiarizing. It's like if one historian waited a few seconds to listen to the other one explain titanic events so he could then repeat him almost word for word but he's using a lot more hand gestures and maybe a drawing

@@belowaverage3451 Admittedly, I posted that comment only after seeing the initial sections where he was highlighting sections of the article with IH's voiceover being loosely similar to the phrasing in the article. In some of the examples that he highlighted, I thought he was really reaching to pin it as plagiarism and that's what got me a little riled up. Felt like the guy was going out of his way to nitpick. Some of the ways he criticized the (obviously rushed) reupload came off as a little cringe too. The reupload distances itself a little more from the article and probably would have been just as successful if that was the first version the world got to see. IH undoubtedly read this article and should have cited it as a source, (whether or not it would have still gotten copyright claimed, I have no idea) but I would personally still say the original video did a decent enough job of being its own retelling of the event.

@@DecimatorXX Even if he credited the article, it is a significant enough of a copy where he would need permission beforehand from the article rights holder (be it Rilley or MentalFloss) to make the video. Hollywood has to do the same thing whenever a non-fiction book like The Big Short gets adapted. Xeems skipped over it but Hbomb briefly made the point that people who plagiarize tend to do so from people they find are beneath them. MentalFloss kind of deserves the content mill reputation they get, but I think there are some nuggets that apply here, but also again I think that's wandering off the point here. He really should have just gotten permission beforehand before making the video. It's not like MentalFloss or Rilley are hard to get ahold of.

Can you imagine Steven Spielberg just grabbing the Jurassic Park novels and adapting them to film without giving Michael Crichton a single cent and then justifying it with "Yours is a book and mine is a movie"?

@@didac3859 Those novels were original, the article wasn't. What the writer did is less transformative than IH's video.

Im looking at the comments, people are malding. I think IH video is transformative for the fact that it's an animated video. I will agree though that IH should have asked permission to use the article since it was word for word and if he was denied then just do a lil rewording to the script. Just steal better.
