Hey Everyone! Happy New Year! Bit of an error in this video (nothing major just an editing error). Due to improper labeling of assets we kinda got an image a bit wrong. The picture outlining UK Punk is a picture of The Ramones, who are not, in fact, from the UK. This should have been a picture of The Clash who are from the UK. However The Ramones are quite popular in Japan as well and also had a major influence in the burgeoning cultures of Japan. We'll be sure to review our videos more tightly in the future to avoid these issues. In the meantime we wish you a Happy New Year's and hopefully only a light drubbing in the comments! Have a good one!

It's fine. The Clash and the Sex Pistols were 100% inspired by The Ramones and U.S. punk, so the title "Did Japan Steal American Style?" works with that Ramones image when discussing Punk, and in short, the UK punk scene of the '70's.

A really good video. As a huge follower of Japanese fashion, I can’t tell you how many of these ideas were caught up in my head tangled altogether, and then you just went and explained all of it, and more, in this one video. Hope to see more content like this.

Ngl american styling in the states is pretty conformist in an ugly way. People hype up the matchy matchy look with Jordans and sports apparel, which imo is super corny and overplayed. But yet you see these people disparaging others who actually try new things when it comes to fashion or unique styling. As with most things in America, the loudest voices tend to carry the narrative.

Part of the problem is peer pressure. If their friends or family do not like it they will not wear it. Also if you're bullied by other people into not wearing something then psychologically you will have a negative option of something or someone who wears something with no conviction even something simple as a man wearing pink

I dont think it's stealing when they put their own twist and their own level of craftsmanship that's unique to them. Creativity is all about taking from the past and adding something slightly different to it. Art is all about "stealing" anyways whether indirectly or directly and I think that's a beautiful thing.

India were the first to use cotton to make clothing and the Chinese invented pants, do either the Indians or Chinese claim their style has been stolen every time someone makes a pair of jeans?

We tend to follow what’s trend but the Japanese people they create/fuse their own taste of fashion. That’s why you can see a different take on that itself.

I’m just gonna say that happy you’re doing well, but I just cringe at the shock value of the expression ‘stole,’ as it looks like it’s trying to stir emotions to get views. Just an opinion from a long time listener who will be in Japan this week, actually. Time to go shopping!

Not necessarily for views. It was how the question was prompted to me and how it usually is presented. Plus it’s always better to speak to the fringes than speak to those in a vacuum who already have a clear understanding. But also, I can’t keep doing this without “views” so it works both ways in this case. The more important thing is people learn something. Forget the titles, the content is more apt.

I think part of it comes from the Japanese who expected America to destroy them after the war, and instead, the US invested in the Japanese infrastructure and helped them so much. Because of things like that, they were more open to outside influences.
