An interesting tale of a tractor supply contract gone wrong, a manufacturing company that built a beast, and the beginning of one of the rarest 4WD tractors ever produced! Wagner and John Deere built a special, now collectable tractor.
Please note that when I mention FWA I am referring to FWDA for FWD Auto! Thank you for watching!

Do you think John Deere knew they would never buy all the tractors they ordered?

Sounds sorta like what John Deere did to Chamberlain tractors in Australia. Bought a stake in the company in the 70’s. By the early 80’s they were using John Deere engines in their tractors (the 80 series), and the 90 series tractors they painted John Deere green and closed down the company in 1986. And all the Chamberlain dealers and distributors became John Deere dealers, and Bingo. John Deere had a foot hold and Dealership in the Australian market virtually overnite. Interestingly, I believe John Deere took away some of the Australian innovations (Rubber mounts for engines and cab) to make their tractors a bit more operator friendly (quieter).

Absolutely. Not only did they get the market share they also were able to bring their customers straight over. The 90series chamberlains were a sight, especially in front wheel assist!

Great history and information; I never realized what you’ve presented in your video, & I’m a lover of John Deere tractors & equipment, but as time goes on I become less fond of the Deere company itself. They’re very cut-throat and what you’ve presented does NOT surprise me whatsoever; it was Deere’s way of “buying” Wagner out. I also never knew Big Bud was born from Wagner. I ❤ BIG BUDS. Also, on the topic of cut-throat companies, Ford motor company tried doing this to Harley Davidson decades ago.

I've ridden on an 8020, I got to meet Bill Donner and visit his farm. We visited a couple times and he let me ride his beautiful 8020 (serial #7/8 depending on who you asked) once including all the way to a nearby tractor show, including riding it in the parade.

@@TheDieselDiary loud as hell, better wear ear plugs. Also the rear end wiggles side to side whenever they move forward, at least on pavement. Definitely not something I'd run every day on a farm but I can see how they were a Cadillac in the early 60s, pretty cushy ride for a tractor that old, and considering they used a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel parts for the engine, as well as the rest of the drivetrain (transmission being a Spicer/Eaton and the axles being Rockwell, the transfer case also possibly being Spicer or Rockwell), parts weren't hard to find, and for the engine and transmission at least they still aren't. If you're the kind of guy to do so you could absolutely use one as a regular tractor on a farm these days.

@CoalChrome Deere were already here en-mass before Chamberlain. In fact the 10 and 20 series John Deeres were some of the most successful tractors around, and were all imports. These competed directly with the Australian built International tractors. We did get the 7520, but not the 7020! @@CoalChrome

Great job in explaining the history. Super interesting. I personally would rather have a Wagner over a 7020 or 7520. I never cared much for the early John Deere 4wd tractors.. to me they were sort of clunky. I’ve owned large deeres and I wasn’t impressed with them in power or fuel efficiency. I liked my Steiger better, plus it was a great deal cheaper and easier to work on.

Still wondering why Wagner signed an agreement that prevented them from producing tractors other than for John Deere - only a fool would have signed such a contract ! Even Steiger produced badge engineered versions of their tractors for the likes of IH, CO-OP, Allis Chalmers and Ford.
