Wow! What and improvement. Gives me a bit more confidence in the 3 or 4 layers of 1708 I'm going to use for repairing my 18" x 18" floor of my battery compartment in our RV. I can't believe those two layers added that my strength to the hull. Thanks for taking the time for making this video.

It's all about layers/ bi-axial, as you said. You always do quality workmanship.
@GasserGlass5 жыл бұрын
I use biaxial in many of my scoops that are attached directly to the carburetors, keeps the warpage to a minimum with all the engine heat/sun etc... ....Some tuff stuff for sure, Used it when I built my Bat-Boat, a lil heavy but tons of strength.... That deck you just did will outlast the boat, Great Job .... now for the headache part, surface geloat sanding, wish I was nearby, id give ya a hand.

Love your videos! I always learn a lot. The “magic” here is that the stiffness follows the third power (cube) of the thickness. Using the much stronger cloth amplified the benefit.

Nice! Nice to see a real world situation of how much strength 1708 adds! I put a single layer on my new deck and was surprised how much stiffer it was than just the plywood

Shocked!! Super solid.. Your technique resembles how surfboards are made here in Hawaii. Only thing we would do differently is after adding the “ sanding “ resin on top of the laminating resin, we would sand them paint. Have not done a gel coat job yet and am cures if it smooths out flat. Great work dude!

I really needed this video. I recently bought a 30 year old Wellcraft 230 Coastal and from the transom to the helm and in the cabin the deck gives a lot as my 285 pound svelte body walks on it and I've been searching for fixes cheaper than replacing the deck with Coosa and layers of glas. I'll install 3 layers like you did and hope for the best.

Nice this gives me some confidence in the job I am doing now. Recore the deck under my mast step. Excited to see that. My plan is 1 layer of chopped strand, 3 layers of biaxial fiberglass, 1 layer of carbon fiber and 1 layer of Kevlar should be strong enough. Doing the carbon and Kevlar just cause they will make a great base layer to build on.

Hello, I see your hatch combing flexing up and down. In my experience any appreciable flexing in a walking surface on a boat will generate stress cracking. It won't happen with one time stomping but as the boat 'works' in the waves and three or four people crowd up there when anchoring or going ashore etc. etc. they will begin to form. In your place I would have as you say done that repair job but I still would have added two ribs underneath. One at the forward hatch combing and one at the aft combing. A piece of 1 1/2" square oak steam bent or contoured on the bandsaw at each point would transfer the load to the hull much more evenly. A couple of knees at the hull would finish the job. Using epoxy with a bit of stiffener makes overhead work much better although it still is a necessary pain. Very nice video. Have you used the fancy sander yet? Looking forward to hearing how you like the electric version. Take care. Doug

Andy, I was very surprised at the dramatic increase in stiffness that 2 layers of biaxial provided. There was more deflection around the hatch opening than I would have expected. Maybe an aplication of more biaxial behind that opening will have a similar stiffening? I know a full windshield frame will have a stiffening effect on that hatch opening, too. Total Boat from Jamestown Dist. is a local company for me and I've been a customer over 30 years. They are a great outfit and get better all the time. They are an excellent source for stainless fasteners, also. I enjoy your videos and learn things all the time.

I'm impressed it worked so well and with only 2 layers. It would have absolutely sucked to glass the bottom of the deck without flipping the boat upside down. I also thought you were making a mistake by not using epoxy but you were right.I cringed when you jumped on it, you'll never get that much force when the boat is on the water.

So I would like to start by saying thanks. My wife almost bought home a boat a week ago. It was a little halfcab savage. But when she had a look at it realised that neither of us have any idea about fibreglass other then it's itchy. But after a massive bing KZbin I found your channel mate and struth isitgood. Your videos are very informative and are a great help to moving forward on the idea of fixing up a small boat. Sadly the one she found has gone already so we will wait for another one to come up. Again thanks cobber and keep it up mate. Oh and GO PACK GO

Fantastic video. Really interesting to see the carful preparation you did to do a complete dry fit before actually putting on those (very large) sheets of fiberglass. My default is to use biaxial (with epoxy) - I now have much more confidence on just how strong that stuff is. Cheers.
