Here's some info to add to this story. Teams did hold onto the Original trophy through the 2006 World Cup, Italy was the last team to hold it until the next tournament. Why the change? Because they broke part of it. The players were throwing the trophy to each other on the team bus, when it hit the floor and a piece of the green stone broke off. It's noticeable in a few photos from that time. FIFA repaired the trophy, and in order to protect it only allow the winners to celebrate with it on the field. It is swapped out as they enter the dressing room. UEFA do the exact same thing with the European Championship when they updated the trophy in 2008, the real trophy is only used in celebration on the field.

There is a similar approach for the UEFA Champions League (previously, it was known as the European Cup). Honestly I’d say Ronaldo is the best of the era, won Portugal’s only 2 trophies, got to the wc quarterfinals 2022, 5 ballon dor, most goals of all time, 5 ucl, most ucl goals and most ucl assists, dribbles second to messi and had some of the best skill moves before his knee injury.
