That applies to some liars. Other liars simply choose to give very brief or no answers to avoid giving contradictory statements and hence being caught in a lie. This would explain the brevity of Terrence Bradley's statements under oath. So maybe what appears to be a justification could be the truth because the person answering the question already has to overcome the skepticism.

The judge never stated in his ruling from which witness the odor of mendacity reeked. He could have been referring to any of the witnesses who testified.

Can you conclusively determine that he was referring to a particular witness or witnesses? Or do we have to imagine who he was referring to? I'm not a psychic, so I cannot conclude who he was referring to.
