I had heard about hanging coffins and graves in the mountains of the Philippines, and had seen some in Sagada. But this moment in Mankayan Benguet I truly DID NOT EXPECT.
In this video you will see an open grave, but there is local culture behind it...
Here in the mountains Igorots have different burial traditions. Not only will you see me experience something unexpected, but you will get to see a beautiful mountain town that is "off the beaten path" here in Benguet. With beautiful views and friendly locals... Mankayan is a wonderful place to connect locally!
I DID NOT EXPECT THIS IN THE PHILIPPINES. Really, this is one of those surprising adventures!

The locals here in this area opened this grave for me (I did not ask), and they informed me that from time to time people will do so and give an offering for different reasons. I mean no disrespect and just wanted to share my local experience with everyone. I truly did not expect this moment to happen. Did you know that in the mountains Igorots have many different and unique burial practices?

There are 3 major ethno-linguistic groups here in the province of Benguet. They are the Ibaloy(Ivadoy), Kankanaey, Kalanguya & other minor groups with distinct cultures and histories of their own. Respectively, these groups call their dialects by their tribes. Collectively, people in Benguet call themselves Igorots. [But in a wider perspective, you can also call people from the other provinces of the Cordillera Region 'Igorot'. So many ethnolinguistic groups, but united(Cordillera).] All the 3 dialects are spoken differently with many different accents, variations of grammar and pronunciation all over the province. Also to note, the Ilocano language has been the main language used to communicate with each ethno groups(not only in Benguet but all over the Cordillera region). The Ilocano spoken in Benguet has a distinct accent from the original speakers from the Ilocos Region, Isabela, Pangasinan, and other provinces. Hope you find this info helpful.

@Johnnykamlon
@Johnnykamlon 5 жыл бұрын
Also to note, it doesn't mean that if you're an 'Ibaloi', you cannot understand Kankanaey, Kalanguya etc., there are those indigenous people who can actually understand all dialects and even speak those 3 dialects fluently and even learn the other dialects of the other regions of the Philippines too. There are also those who can understand but replies back in Ilocano language. In the family tree, people trace their roots way back with their parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on. These ethnolinguistic groups and all other indigenous groups in the Cordillera region (and in general all people in the country) have been in intermarriage for the past 150+ years resulting to a variety of people who can speak both their parents' languages. For instance, there are couples of Ibaloi and Kankanaey descent. Ultimately, this couple uses Ilocano language in communication to each other. They can also learn each other's dialect and in turn teach their children both these dialects. But for some parents, they just ending up using Ilocano as the main language to talk to their children. There are also cases of intermarriage between Ifugao people and Ibaloi, Kankanaey etc., Ilocano with Ifugao etc... In some cases, people from the Cordillera region are getting married with the indigenous people of the south(like Bisaya, Cebuano, Tagalog etc). But with the more intriguing case are those indigenous people getting married with other nationalities (mostly English speaking countries: US, Canada, UK, Australia). ()These intermarriage of Filipinos and other nationalities have both positive & negative impacts to their children in regards to culture. There is always that 100% percentage that a child of a Filipino and a foreign national are ending up speaking purely in English & forgetting his/her own cultural identity and language. I'm saying this because I have seen a lot of couples, families (including a relative of mine) like this. Indigenous/Ethnic culture and language is lost in the young generation.

@@Johnnykamlon Hi Torogikamlon, thanks for your insight. My parents are not from the area but was drawn to coming to Mankayan because of the mining industry. Originally, my parents were living in Baguio where I was born. They moved to Mankayan/Lepanto because of the benefits the company offered to it's employees which are free education and health care. I went to school with local kids, played with them, that's how I learned kankana-ey. After high school, I went to college in Baguio, stayed in a boarding house and shared with different ethnic groups such as: Ibaloi, Kapangpangan , Pangansinan and of course, Ilocano as that is the medium of communication. Any way, it's good to know that there are people like you tracking down the evolution of people and that is history itself. Keep up this conversation alive. I appreciate your input. It's adding to my history background.
@Johnnykamlon
@Johnnykamlon 5 жыл бұрын
I am of both 'Ibaloi' and 'Ifugao' descent. But with a mixed bag of all the other ethnic groups. My father's father is of Ibaloi descent. My father's mother is of Ilocano, Ibaloi, Kalanguya descent. My mother's father is of Ifugao descent. My mother's mother is of Kankanaey & Ibaloi descent. I'm respectfully acknowledging and accepting all these ancestry as my cultural identity (although I can't speak fluently in Ibaloi and Ifugao myself 😅😅😅. I can fluently understand Ibaloi but cannot speak it fluently, and with Ifugao I can understand a little bit but cannot speak it entirely). Ilocano has been the main language we've been using in my family starting when I was just a toddler. I guess my parents never taught me in an early age how to speak Ibaloi and Ifugao. It's not just me who have this kind of issue; I can safely say that there are thousands more just like me in the younger generation (millennials born in the 90s). This is why all elders in the Cordillera region are saying that cultural identity is lost among the younger generation. Even I admit I don't fully know well the traditions and practices that my parents and grandparents know. I guess I have not been exposed enough to all our traditions, customs, and ethnic practices. It's really a growing issue among the young generation that there is culture lost because of many factors of the society and environment today.

You really are walking in the town I grew up - amazing! That's were I spent my childhood. Are you planning to visit the mining area? You mentioned the Golf Course site, that's were the foreigners spent their Saturdays' and Sundays' break. Take a look! Company has their own private plane too. The surroundings of the company is well-designed because of the presence of Americans and British back in the day. I hope you enjoy your short stay! Take care! Again, thank you for visiting Mankayan and showing to the world what Mankayan can offer. Looking closely on the video, I noticed the increased of houses which means there are more people now than before. Back in the days, you don't see kids loafing around. Everybody is busy. Fathers go to work, depending on their schedules or routine, mothers run their stores or busy tending to their patch of vegetable gardens, and kids are all in school. It's very organized town, no serious crime, except a little fight here and there during Saturdays and Sundays when people congregate for few drinks. But importantly, there are so many, many families the company had helped. Free schooling from kindergarten, elementary to high school and free school bus. There are so many, many nurses, engineers, teachers, accountants and other profession Mankayan and Lepanto produced and most of them are living abroad. A lot of nurses went to Canada because there was a time when America banned Filipino nurses to get to US. As I scroll down, I noticed some of your subscribers' last are familiar to me. If you decide to visit the mining site, they have recreational facilities: bowling alley, theater, court for badminton, pelota, volley ball court and basketball. It's like city in nowhere land. Another thing that I noticed are the hills and mountains, they're bare, no more trees - that is bad, that causes serious erosion. Those mountains and hills used to have pine trees. I remember, young people were recruited to help plant trees and I am a regular part of that youth project program on "Arbor Day". Thank you again for visiting and showcasing Mankayan/Lepanto. I never saw the "bird's eye view" of the town and its landscape until today. My first because of your video. I can't thank you enough. If you need help, better go to the municipal hall. There are many people that can help you. Igorots or the locals in the area are very, very helpful and accommodating.

Yep the freezing cold to take a bath n the windy air from a top of the mountain. N of course the water from the faucet can be drank without storing it in a ref or in a cooler. And top of all, watching the beauty of the mountains with its vegetables crops everywhere.

Yup, You are so damn right Kulas, People in the mountains (Igorots) are VERY RESPECTFUL, Generous & TRUSTED and they're literally Friendly to strangers WITHOUT any negative motives as compared to the People in Lowlands who rob strangers....You are soooo lucky to be experiencing the Goodness of the lovely people there in the Cordillera while exploring those beautiful places in the North. Power On Kulas.! May God Bless & Guide you in every adventure you have.

There was one time I was in Sagada, we were doing medical mission, I had to wake up at 3:00 am and get ready, I had to take a bath without hot water (Take note it was at that time December). It was literally ice bucket challenge. But it was so refreshing!
