Commando pea is actually just bastion too. Chili bean bomb is just a one use config:tank button, while most of pvzgw was objectively moba based rather then pvp based, all base Pvzgw1 characters have either movement abilities or long range abilities made to travel distances quick. Sunflower has laser, cacti has drone soldier has rocket LEAP not rocket jump, engineer has jackhammer scientist has warp and all star has that weird ass imppunt/tackleshield movement tech.

As someone who played GW1 and 2 a lot, I don't think that it gets enough credit for how fun the games are. Though I know why it's niche. I don't think it's just the art style being for kids, I think the IP is the reason. Most people who liked PVZ liked the og games, the shooter audience among them was likely low. it was destined to be niche, but it was a fun time. With that being said, and with all due respect, I don't believe Blizzard needed any inspiration from GW when I look at the archetypes that have existed in games for a long time, OW was just the first game to do them in that fresh format in a digestible way, with a bonus of being Blizzard as you pointed out. I understand the time table you're working with is probably the announcement of OW with the release of GW being in the same year (2014). if you're not aware, OW is a remnant of a larger project called Project Titan which began many years before that (I believe it was 5+), so I would not be surprised if many of these ideas were conjured a lot earlier. Your analysis of the ways OW is not a Moba are 100% true and some people may not know that, but allow me to be a bit pedantic about this because this is pretty important. "Moba-like" is the way people attempt to describe the "ability" focus in the objective based team shooter game. When someone called OW a shooter, OW players will use the closest things they have to point to the characters at launch who were designed to be for non-shooter players. Even today, when abilities are overtuned and override the shooting side of the game, the people who enjoy the shooting get annoyed. It has everything to do with that and nothing to do with the actual format of mobas. It's easier to say it that way than to say "The devs were WOW devs who played a lot of Team Fortress 2 and accidentally made a competitive shooting game with abilities" which is the reality. Some people instead say "RPG shooter". It's whatever, there is no perfect description that makes everyone happy. Even then, OW DOES have roles within roles, it's just not labeled that way, but the community understands it that way. There are offtanks, bruisers, there are flankers, ranged, and melee, pure healers, and support healers. I don't think Tracer became a blinking character in 2 years because they saw a scientist do it. You could make the argument at that point Bastion a character which roots himself and becomes a turret is engineer zombie inspired, or Rein a character who charges is all star inspired. I think you agree that would be a bit ridiculous. I don't want to harp on all the examples, but i'll focus on one briefly for the sake of argument. A time traveling character with speed, low hp, and self heal all make sense independently. I also don't like the close range comparison for many reasons. The clips of the guy comparing OW sounds like he's just associating things with what he knows, which is exactly how OW players describe things in Deadlock and Marvel Rivals. Anyone who can't see nuance and merely calls Spider man "literally Genji" is not worth listening to. Spider man was only Genji in the sense that the top Genji players gravitated towards him. Just like Soldier to Punisher. They are not wrong to associate, OW revolutionized what games could be, let's not ignore the cultural impact of the archetypes expressed through these characters. There are also people arguing that Paladins did many things first, and while it's always possible Blizzard sees things and iterates based on inspiration, I don't think it's far fetched to say these ideas can exist independently. Sorry for the rant, just tried to tackle all the points I felt were relevant from the video.

@ Both characters have an ability that lets them burrow for a period of time with the ability to go fast with the use of a different ability. The only difference is chomper can instantly kill with venter not. Now please tell me a game like overwatch and PvZ gw that came out before 2012 that had that same type of burrow. (Edit : if burrowing is a general game mechanic why did it take till overwatch 2 to have a hero that can use it. You would think it’s smart to have a hero in the first game that would have that as it is a general game mechanic. )

It was certainly true back in the early 7th gen because that's when Xbox really marketed towards a special kind of moron with dudebro games and the industry followed suit. Now that indie games are basically on par with aaa for the most part, people have been exposed to much more variety in terms of vibes. What did make gw seem unserious was the IP. PvZ is a mobile game franchise, and mobile games have always been mostly trash serving an exploitable audience with no standards. Most "serious gamers" didn't associate that with innovation or quality back then especially.

It's only recently that people have begun to think of it as a mostly mobile franchise. A sort of Mandela affect because of how it's played now. PVZ was one of the first games I played as a small child and I played it on a laptop. And even then PVZ released on mobile in a different time in culture. The big mobile games of the time where ,temple run, angry birds, and fruit ninja. It would be years and years before mobile games where saturated with games that had ads every five seconds, and 8 billion micro transactions. mobile games didn't have the same negative stigma they now have.

@@squid-boy4178 Genre descriptions are not resolute. Every entry to a genre redefines it and has the possibility to branch off. Overwatch was purposefully designed to mimic a lot of the aspects of a MOBA, so I don't see why you're popping veins when people call it one. We don't need to be told Overwatch was based on MOBAS to see that. Also I was wrong about titan being a MOBA, it was going to be an MMO, then the scraped it to make overwatch which was step 1 in a 3 step project to make a PvP, then a PvE, then an MMO under the same franchise. @@S0UPIE "Overwatch was purposefully designed to mimic a lot of the aspects of a MOBA" I Literally say so in the video two direct quotes "the MOBA inspiration is clearly something that started to be focused on later in development" "Utilizing MOBA style Abilities" There were borrowed aspects of MOBAs in Overwatch, but all of the borrowed aspects were already in other FPS games first. So it makes way more sense that they were primarily inspired by their contemporaries and secondarily inspired by MOBAs My point is the MOBA angle is over exagerated by people who want Overwatch to be a completely original experience. And that people who try to claim it's a MOBA IN FIRST PERSON are obviously wrong. It is inspired by moba's but it's obviously 90% Class based shooter 10% MOBA Not 50% Class based shooter 50% MOBA

Crazy it’s almost like the devs of this game wanted to get name recognition from another franchise. What was it call? Oh yeah cod 4 modern warfare. And guess what? There’s nothing wrong with that. Every game to some extent copies other games. You just sound like you’re mad because nobody wanted to play your game and are just hating OW because it became popular.

@Fyre19 what does that have to do with a game being good? There's plenty of critically acclaimed games that don't get updates anymore. It has amazing reviews and it's a genuinely fun game, you can't just judge a game off of whether or not it has updates anymore.
