Y'know, this was pretty lukewarm for Pokemon Opinions. I generally hate genwunner bias, like we get it you only played Red & Blue & only know anything else bc its popular or you play Smash Bros., but like. He said he fucked with Volbeat & Barbaracle so that's pretty rad. & he even balanced that out with disliking Rowlet & Cyndaquil being so high up, we got a range.

I have not watched the video yet but I will assume Coney is wrong, as he tends to be. I think a lot of the reason people think newer pokemon designs are less inspired is because they incorporate more different origins in more complex ways, there's usually actually a ton of interesting stuff behind each design but it is often easier to miss what the concept is for a lot of the weirder ones. And if you do not get what a pokemon is supposed to be it feels less inspired than it actually is a lot of the time.

So believe it or not, but Binacle and Barbaracle don't actually need the rocks they're in. They are a hive mind of sorts and can fight independently of each other and their rocks. Barbaracle's midriff is just the body of the biggest head, and the other arms have eyes because they're living beings and can detach and fight separately. Barbaracle is a Pokémon Gundam and it's so cool

Here's the thing, especially post gen 4. There was a standard and expectation with how a lot of Pokemon looked. Gen 1 obviously came first and didn't have that standard so has quite a few lazy designs. Gen V was well after the standard was set and has as many if not more lazy designs than Gen 1. Gen 7 has its fair share as do 8 and 9
