For me, the dragon isn't even the coolest thing about Saint George. When Emperor Diocletian was torturing him, he gave George a cup of poison to drink, but George made the sign of the cross over the cup, and when he drank he was unharmed.

You got me thinking... I think he was the first saint who "found me" as a young child too! I went to a protestant school, but the principal once told a story about St George in assembly that has always stuck with me... And I bear his name. I was happy about that then too! By the by, I thought your profile seemed familiar. Although I don't know much of your story, I'm very glad to know that you've found Christ and His Church. May God bless you and keep you!

When we were kids, my mother taught us this prayer to saint George that was to be prayed when in danger of any animal attack, and I kid you not it NEVER FAILED! Saint George came to the rescue and came FAST! the prayer is originally in Spanish and goes something like this: Blessed Saint George hold back this animal with your blessed cord. Yes sir! Saint George protected us many times when we encountered vicious dogs on our way to school or anywhere, we were in danger! Teach it to your kids and say it yourself its truly an amazing prayer!

Paleontology and archaeology would disagree, any person or organization trying to smash a 65 million year gap together is playing a game with half truths and fallacies, and sadly for doctrines based on dubious denominations. No credible Christian, or specifically Catholic source would say this, only those who need to reduce the Bible to a textbook of brute fact, due to a fragile faith that cannot stand nuance and symbolism. Without the guidance of the Apostolic traditions, that understands Scripture as serving the ends of salvation, not science, you end up with people with no credibility using scripture to justify falsehoods aimed at those without education. Such claims are not for the purpose of saving man, but saving protestant doctrines of literal-ism, harmonization and sola scriptura. Making an enemy of all scientists does not do Christianity any favors in the long run. You should pursue the conversion of all, period., not just those not aware of certain facts. Making do with local fundamentalist communities shows to me a desire for power within a limited context, not global salvation, which should always be the desired ends not matter how implausible it may seem at times. You can't convert people on the basis of things they know are not true, but by making them realize their sins are truly a heavy burden and only Christ can address them. Claims made in areas that require expert knowledge, but only ever aimed at those without it shows a cynical mentality, and many Atheists use such fake-science as ammunition against the faith, and I can't blame them. No one that makes such claims thinks they will ever convert the real experts, and only the desire to convert all shows true faith, and not just the use of it for sinful ends. True belief is as much about intellectual strength as spiritual, be aware of claims made that isolate a faith community, not all mockery from the world is un-justified, as not all things said in the name of Christ are true. Matthew 7:21

The picture does show symbolism however, that doesn't disprove the fact that this was indeed a true event. Was it true? IDK I didn't live then to witness it but that doesn't mean it disproves the event as merely symbolism. That's my thoughts.

Dr Taylor Marshall Right I see what you're saying. There are other mentions of dragons in the bible other than Satan. Satan came in many forms the most famous being the serpent in the garden. In Job God is talking and mentions "Leviathan", describing the creature's characteristics of a dragon or T-rex. What i'm saying is that this could have been a literal event in time. Not just a symbolism of St. George defeating Satan or evil although you can take it that way if you choose.

Taylor your missing context in that story. Please don’t dismiss it. He was actually a prince. Not all soldiers who joined the Roman force, was a commoner. George has a lineage. He also had access to Komodo dragons, I find these stories not completely myth. The myths are back up stories. But very special stories. Love to chat about it. The context shouldn’t be overlooked in any myth, they do add to context. But militarily.

Although not related to traditional sources - since these are modern terms - the struggles within the *hellenistic* *world* that are reflected in later *regional* *myths* (one could look also into Arab folklore) could be interpreted as a transition from *'military* *states'* into a *'culture* *state'* which accumulated 'political capital' by education rather than conquest. Certainly, the politcal rise of consules to emperors, backed by their local military veterans was 'balanced' by the quietly increasing number of patricians who cherrished 'un-roman' hellenistic learning and *an* *'oriental* *cult'* *that* *would* eventually *integrate* *all* 'iron age' *imperial* *provinces* despite the total social and political turmoil of the migration period. This most unlikely *supremacy* *of* 'ethos' and *'logos'* *within* *chaos* is explicitly reflected in conversion stories of individuals like Augustine (who wouldn't have believed in Christ if not confronted by the reality of a lasting, universal church) and may have been a 'collective experience' that expressed itself later in the mentioned iconography. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6GpgnaOl8Skl7c

My big huge question does not question the myth, the saint, or the man. My question is what is the origin and connection between St. George and the English? If it came from the Normans, where did they get it from and why did they choose him ? Who created the banner of Saint George, how was that image decided upon ?

"Child sacrifice in Selene" = Cyrene, Cyrenaica (Libya)? I got this thought: Cyrene used to be a Greek city, but situated east of the Carthagenian homeland, and west of the levant. The Carthagenians, Phoenicians and Canaanites all allegedly practiced *child sacrifice.* Somewhere I heard that the children were being thrown into to firebreathing mouth of a giant statue of a god, Baal perhaps. I don't know if any of this is documented to be true, yet it could have been rumours in later Roman times. Could the *"dragon"* be this *firebreathing statue?*

Great story, but how do you explain the fact that the dragon very often is pictured to be on a leash held by a fair lady. Was the dragon a domestic animal of the princess? Or was the dragon her guard animal and St. George actually killed the animal to get the princess? St. George is actually now on the coat of arms of Moscow. And many say that the symbolism behind is the war with China, that was fought and won by Europeans at that time.

I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel." Genesis 3:14-15 (DR) This is called the proto-Gospel, because it tells of Christ all the way in Genesis in a straightforward way! Regardless of how you translate the pronoun, the meaning is the same: the woman's "seed" is how the serpent's head is crushed. Now, think about that for a second: a woman's seed. A man is who has "seed". This is a very special circumstance! The knot of Eve's disobedience is untied by Mary's obedience, through which God had preordained Christ, our Savior, would come via such a miraculous birth! This hope is present all the way in Genesis!

I'm sure he was just a guy who killed a lizard or a crocodile and everyone bigged him up for it. Behave yourself, people are thick as shit and even more so in the time of this story... look to the most basic explanation and your probably not far off.

Christianity plagiarizes and naturalizes the nonsense of ancient human myths and legends. Stories of a hero killing a dragon or some dragon-like creature to gain treasure, power, or save suffering people are all over the Old World, from Japan on the edge of the far eastern world to China to India and then to Northern Europe, Jutland Peninsula. We know of multiple versions of this story, and we know it's pretty much all over the Old World, but we may never understand its origins and memes. Scholars in the Far East tend to regard "dragon" as a metaphor for floods. The Japanese god Susanoo killed a serpent with eight heads and eight tails, and the Chinese hero Dayu killed a serpent with nine heads. Indra, the god of thunder in Indian mythology, also killed the serpent, and Hercules in ancient Greek mythology killed Hydra. . . These legendary dragons have several characteristics, have multiple heads, are huge, are associated with swamps, and venom. So scholars believe it is a symbol of a flooded river. There is a hypothesis that this is the original legend of the Indo-Europeans spread through the migration of the Indo-Europeans and the Eurasian steppe.
