Also, you might want to check out the video called “What Did The T-Rex REALLY Sound Like?” by Dangerville. After seeing that video, now part of me really wants to see a movie involving a near 100% accurate T-Rex (though the Jurassic Park T-Rex still works for me, seeing how it is a hybrid of T-Rex and different modern animals, made to pose as a theme park attraction). Imagine a T-Rex being portrayed with JP-quality animatronics and CGI, but with a feathered appearance similar to the Saurian game in some ways, demonstrating great eyesight/hearing/smell, generating a thundering close-mouthed vocalization mixed with infrasound as in that video, and having all other sounds it generates (like the equivalent of hisses, open-mouth calls, songs, squawks, crows, growls, etc.) being based exclusively on birds and crocodilians to create more plausibly accurate sound-effects.

It`s funny how Jurassic Park made T.rex less badass than in real life by giving it basically no sense of sight or smell, which would be a death sentence for any predator.

Less bite force too, based on the fact that the rex didn't bite the dude on the toilet straight in half in the first movie.

+Gynnester gaming here To be fair, though, it is better explained in the book, where amphibians were just one of many modern animals used to systematically fill in the blanks and create a GMO that visitors would want the theme park’s Dinosaurs to look like. I recall them also using the DNA of avians, crocodiles, lizards, etc. as well. The book also explicitly stated that the T-Rex’s poor eyesight was a byproduct of Ingen’s genetic tampering, rather than the Dinosaur naturally having bad eyesight. This is one small area that the first movie adaptation botched, in my opinion, until a retcon in Jurassic World helped rectify it.

Mark Cobuzzi Some animals in real life only recognize things that move as prey. I doubt Rex would be one of those, but it does exist and tends to be more of an insectivore thing.

T. Rex was an ambushing predator, with great vision, and a bacteria-filled bite, and Spinosaurus was a semi-aquatic serpent-type monster that could detect the motion of animals in water? If anything, the real types of dinosaurs we know of today sound cooler than the ones in _Jurassic Park_!

Leila Smith Only an incompetent writer/director/story teller adapts the lore after their stories. A competent one adapts their stories after the lore they've chosen. ... this is basically why I don't get people give Christopher Nolan so much praise for his Batman trilogy, since he shows all those signs of being an incompetent story teller based on how Batman lore is supposed to work. Buuuut I'm getting off the subject. XD

Leila Smith not to mention in later films, the t-rex's bite was greatly reduced. T-rex could have snapped Spino's neck in half a second after getting its mouth around it.

jummbl I think the logic they apply to that scenario is that the T rex in that scene was still quite young, so it's bite wasn't as impressive as an adult's such as Rexy's.

Many species of snakes cannot detect prey that is sitting still. They just use other senses to avoid obstacles. I'm sure these snakes are what inspired the T-rex vision for the movie.
@windhelmguard5295
@windhelmguard5295 5 жыл бұрын
that would not be the case, you have to consider that this is in perspective of the t-rex, when the t-rex is in motion, from the t-rexes frame of reference, the trees and rocks are in motion and can therefore be percieved, the t-rex would struggle to distinguish what it is on sight alone, but it would damn well know that something is there.

I am baffled at at how many people believe the BS hollywood inaccuracies of jurrasic park. They were entertaining movies, but that was all. Trex most likely being the apex predator of it's time, most likely had excellent vision. Not to mention excellent smelling. Even if a trex couldn't see you, it most likely would be able to sniff you out and find you. Alot of modern day predators have excellent sight and smell. Trex wouldn't be any different.
@jagk-du3yw
@jagk-du3yw 8 жыл бұрын
And a T-rex' nasal cavity was huge, according to the CT scans. Many animals use their smelling to find things. Dogs can recognize every animal (humans included) just by the smell. Why wouldn't a giant carnivore have a good sense of smell?

They likely wouldn't been more agressive to humans than modern wild carnivores which hadn't been in contact with humans. They could see them as prey or as a threat but they would certainly not go out of their way to attack them. In a realistic coexistence scenario is quite likely that Dinosaurs would became more careful around humans. Even the biggest living animals are usually afraid of humans due to hunting.

In the book, Grant discovers this bad eyesight in the sauropods too, putting it down to (if I remember correctly) the way geneticists had been making the animals. Obviously, they took it down the cinematic route focussing only on the rex, but has there been any studies on various sauropod eyes? I've not been through all your videos yet, but after watching about the one about Carnotaurus (and its arms), can you (if not already) discuss t-rex arms?

It would make sense that T-Rex could see something inanimate because when some herbivores that T-Rex hunted where quite still when grazing and eating, meaning that T-Rex would have to see all objects, moving or not. T-Rex was a mistake to bring to life that we hope is never made. I think that Compsognathus and other similar sized carnivores should be THE MAXIMUM for carnivores if we can recreate them. I know people wanna see the big guns like ak-47 instead of a really weak handgun, but it's safer and basically it means nobody gets hurt. This is my opinion, don't judge.

Does some of the things people consider flawed in the Jurassic Park Franchise make sense? 1. T.Rex's Eye Sight -In the movies, all of the T.Rex's eye sight are based on movement. Now, we know that T.Rexes have great eye sight and that most of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park/World are part frog which have eye sight based on movement. Since they filled parts of the T.Rex's DNA with frog DNA, the T.Rex might have some characteristics of a frog such as the movement eye sight. (If you don't believe this theory, read the second book, the Lost World, where some one tries to trick the T.Rex by standing still but Malcolm states that he read the wrong report) 2. No Feathers on Dinosaurs/Poison for the Dilophosaurus -Jurassic Park/World was a theme park that wanted to attract a lot of people. However, if they suddenly broke everyone's imagination by putting feathers on dinosaurs, that would disappoint a lot of people. Dr. Wu probably saw that the dinosaurs had feathers and changed the DNA code to remove them. Poison for the Dilophosaurus is probably the same. They want the dinosaurs to be 'Bigger, Louder, Have More Teeth,' so they made the Dilophosaurus have poison spit. (They explained this in Jurassic World)

First off, great video, very informative, I really enjoyed it. Just for clarification, the book and I (believe) the movie explicitly state that the characteristic of only being able to see movement is due to the insertion of certain frog genes, not because Trex as an animal naturally had this type of eye sight.

I love evidence and research based analysis about T.Rex's abilities. The coolest thing about the REAL T.Rex is that it was probably smarter, stronger and a much better hunter than it is depicted as in any movie (not just Jurassic Park). In the movie's defense, technically in the book someone mentions that the vision issue was a common occurrence across the park and with other dinosaurs. Suspecting that it was an issue with their cloning techniques. Giving the perfect hunter a weakness to exploit. It's only a shame the movie characters never had that conversation.

One thing to note regarding Carcharodontosaurus, the skull reconstruction plays an important part in what the study found for it and that reconstruction is suspect, no one outside of Sereno and pals, in almost 20 years, has had access to the actual fossils of the skull of Carcharodontosaurus which actually was broken in dozens of small pieces. If the skull could be reconstructed with a shorter snout (and it can be, Carrano et al. 2012) and a wider back end of the skull, at least allosaurus-like binocular vision could be possible.

The one thing you didn't talk about, which I always figured was relevant was whether a tyrannosaurus would be instinctively wired to chase things which run from it. I'm thinking of the stories of cats who adopt mice who are somehow dim enough not to run from them, or frogs who get put in a room full of dead flies and starve, or people being told not to panic if a shark shows up, because that'll just convince them to chase you. I'm not sure if this question is one which would be easy to answer, but I'd say whether its predatory instincts were triggered by movement is probably just as important as how well its eyes work. Basically, I always thought that studying its actual vision capability alone is kind of misinterpreting the movie because the character didn't explain things well.

This was kinda fixed for The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park 3. In those films the Tyrannosaurs have good eyesight. In the Jurassic Park Novel it was explained that the T-rex had bad eyesight because of the frog DNA used in it's creation. In the sequel Novel, there was a guy who theorized that Tyrannosaurus Rex had movement based vision, like frogs and one of the villains shared this information with the other Villains. However it turned out that the information was false because one of Tyrannosaurs killed the guy who believed in that BS, despite actually not moving. In the films only the original T-rex seen in JP, JW and JWFK had the movement based vision thing, possibly a genetic defect caused by the frog DNA, while the other Tyrannosaurs from TLW and JP3 had good eyesight like their Cretaceous counterparts. Just a little info

No wonder the devs nerfed the server with the KT Extinction balance patch. T-rex was too damn op. insane eyesight, unparalleled sense of smell, small yet strong arms, able to bite through literally anything...seems like the only potential weakness that's still hotly debated is "how fast was it" since I've seen many pop-science articles saying an average human could easily outrun it while there's potential evidence that it would have been decently fast (at least fast enough to catch a human)
