Did the Megalodon Turn Into the Great White?

A huge whale-eating shark dominated the oceans millions of years ago. Its evolution has been the topic of heated debate among scientists for over 150 years. Until recently, a lot of paleontologists were sure that one of the most ferocious marine predators of our time, the great white shark, descended from the mighty megalodon. Well, recent findings are bringing this long-held belief into question.

SUMMARY:
- Stensen's discovery provided convincing evidence that glossopetrae were, in fact, fossilized shark teeth! And since some of these “rocks” were about 7 inches long, this was a somewhat unsettling discovery. After all, they were much bigger than any great white’s teeth, which were rarely more than 2½ inches long.
- The problem was in difficulties that researchers had every time they tried to reconstruct prehistoric sharks. The thing is that a shark’s skeleton is made of cartilage, which tends to decompose much faster than bone.
- As for the megalodon, it was the largest predator that’s ever lived on this planet. It could get up to 60 feet long, which is about the size of a semi. It could weigh over 70 tons. To put that into perspective, that’s the combined weight of about 10 elephants.
- Researchers estimate that a full-grown megalodon probably consumed about a ton of food every day, and it had a particular taste for whales.
- The megalodon had approximately 280 of these ginormous teeth arranged in 5 rows. Lost teeth were typically replaced within 2 days max.
- Fossilized megalodon teeth have been discovered in different regions of the world, from North and South America all the way to Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
- In November 2012, scientists discovered new shark fossils in South America. These remains included a complete jaw with teeth and several vertebrae. The teeth of this new shark were saw-like, but they weren't as sharp as those of the great white or megalodon.
- The great white has much sharper cutting tools than the prehistoric shark. Both of these sharks’ teeth are sort of oval-shaped.
- While the Meg preferred warm regions, great whites lived in the cool waters of the Northern Atlantic.

No, they didn’t. The great white evolved from the broadtooth mako shark (now extinct). Megalodon was an otodus shark, and it came from a single lineage of sharks that gradual grew and changed slightly until we ended up with megalodon. That chain ended upon megalodon’s extinction. Megalodon also potentially existed at the same time as the first great whites, meaning that one didn’t turn into the other. So not only were they not even related in the slightest (apart from the fact they were sharks), but they also existed at the same point in time, so no, they did not turn into great whites.

That's an interesting question....Earth was a very different place then and obviously much warmer due to the size of the animals. Earlier Great White teeth were larger then they are today however, not even close to a smaller Meg tooth, so I dont think that the Meg turned into the Great White of today......distant relatives? Perhaps. Great White teeth dont really resemble Meg teeth. I have examples of both and looking at them, they're from 2 completely different animals.....

Submarine and other Great White Sharks are out there in the Oceans and Seas today that are much larger than 23ft. I believe if you leave the Great White Sharks alone, then they could grow up to much larger sizes than people would expect. I believe that all of those Sharks still exist, such as the Megalodon, and the Broad Tooth Mako Shark, because as you look at Shark week and other shows. They would only go to a specific place not that far from Land. The most that the study in size as farcasca Great White Sharks is concerned, half of the time would be around 12 ft. To 20 ft. Long in size. It takes a lot to go out into all of the Oceans and Seas and study what is in the Deep depths to find much larger Sharks and is very Dangerous as well. I think that the much larger Sharks are dwelling in areas much farther out away from humans and land. I think that there are some out there that are 60 ft. Or larger still living. People have found Sea creatures that they thought was extinct, still living.
