I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the whole NFL Sunday Ticket lawsuit. On one hand, I hate the NFL’s greed machine. We all know Sunday Ticket is a grift. However, I have no sympathy for frivolous lawsuits that plague the American judicial. No one told anyone to spend all that switch to Direct TV or buy the damn package in the first place.
I guess I missed the constitutional amendment that shoult have the inalienable right to NFL Sunday Ticket. To that extent, I am indifferent, at best, toward the lawsuit. Besides, the scam being run for tickets to sports and other live events is far worse.
Anyway, what stuck in my craw about the Sunday Ticket is how the NFL has basically come out gloating about how it is gouging fans. Bullshit doesn’t even begin to describe it. Here is what the NFL, not even a person, just a generic league statement, said to justify itself:
"The NFL's media distribution model is the most fan friendly in sports, with all games broadcast locally on free over-the-air television in addition to many other choices available to fans who want even more access to NFL content.”
Pardon my French, but exusi moi? Nothing about the NFL media distribution model is fan-friendly. And does it not know other sports exist? Like I can watch all IFL games for free on KZbin. I can also watch Major League Rugby Games for free. There are numerous sports that do not charge a dime to watch their games. And the NFL thinks, somehow, someway it is more fan-friendly than that?
I mean really. What a bizarre, easily disprovable lie to trot out. Next, you think those in charge of the NFL will be trying to claim it is the same and concussions aren’t an issue? Oh wait, never mind.
Back to the fan-friendly media distribution model. The league has piecemealed games out meaning that you need seven different subscriptions to watch pro football in 2024. Between Netflix having Christmas Day games, Amazon Prime, two games on Peacock only, and the single ESPN+ exclusive game, well, the cost adds up.
If you were to be vigilant about canceling subscriptions, the cost would run you $520 or so dollars to catch everything minus Sunday Ticket. And if you want Sunday Ticket, that is going bring your annual total to $857 and some change.
