Did the Seafoam fix last? Update on the Ford Ranger

A little over a year ago I used Seafoam and Lucas in the Ford Ranger. The engine was making a lot of noise. The gasoline engine sounded more like a diesel engine. After using Seafoam and Lucas, the engine sounded great! But did the fix last? In this video, we take a closer look at the ranger, looking inside the oil pan using a boroscope, checking the oil and filter for contamination, and checking the used oil for film strength. @@ProjectFarm ... Been seeing a number of processes touted in the comments and replies. My own practice is to add a quart of cheap ATF to the crankcase a day or two before the oil change. Use the vehicle as usual, allowing The fluid in oil to wash the inside of the engine. Next day or so, change oil and filter. I like to use Valvoline Racing oil, normally, but in truth, most oils are perfectly fine for use in our older vehicles.

Seafoam did my van good. It suffered heavy oil sludge. I put in 5 ounces of the seafoam, waited about 300 miles, cha ged the oil which was very black but no sludge. Then, I added a container of engine restore with the oil cha ge to stop the top end tapping of the lifters. The seafoam caused top end lifter noise in the last few days before I actually did the oil change. I believe the engine restore did a good job lubricating the top end. No more tapping noise and also van runs excellent.

Just found your channel. As a retired technician of over 45 years, I can attest to the strengths of Seafoam and Lucas products. Both are about the best out there, in their field. As I haven't read all your millions of comments, congrats on such a large base BTW, I don't know if anyone has told you that the 2.9L engine in your truck has a solid lifter cam in it from the factory, and there is an adjustment for them. You have to remove the valve covers, so if it's as quiet as it is in the vids, at this mileage I wouldn't touch it yet. The Seafoam did wonders to it. From seeing your initial vid on this as well, I saw how built up your throttle body is too. The gasket is only a couple bucks at the parts store, and removing the linkage and 4 bolts attaching it to the intake to use a plastic hard bristle toothbrush to scrub it while spraying it with Seafoam, will make your idle quality and throttle response like new. Just a long couple of points to add to your very nice production.

I have a question for you. I know you maybe biased towards those products. I currently own an 05 Civic EX with VVT (Variable Valve Timing). I've purchased the "Low Viscosity forumula" of Lucas as it's meant for VVT engine. My engine has a ticking sound & burns oil. I've been told to use "Rislone Engine Oil Treat (yellow bottle) or the Rislone Compression Repair with Ring Seal." I mainly want to tackle the oil consumption as the noise I can live with by cranking the music up. If I can hit both than that's even better. My thing is, do you have experience with these products? If so, any thoughts on them? I've tried Lucas oil stablizer in the past & it seemed to have helped maybe an extra 1k miles before losing oil between changes. I usually do 5k oil changes. I also use HM oil 5w-20 & am against going higher as I'd like to stay with the manufactor reccomends. Maybe I'll try 5w-30, but dont se myself going high than that if need be. I know I said alot, but I'd like your opinion, thanks!

Same here, I don’t change my oil without a bottle of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer to substitute a quart of oil, now I’m probably gonna use seafoam regularly in my crankcase and fuel tank and prob throttle body occasionally

@@dbzownz12345 When using a multi viscosity motor oil, you need not be concerned that your are using 5w-30, or even 5w-40, because the higher number will protect aginst extreme heat. The lower number will lubricate at colder temps. My 67 Buick Riviera calls for 10w-30, but I can run 10w-40 with no issues. I hope that helps.

My best tip for helping keep metal shavings from wearing engine parts, is to put a large flat magnet, such as those that are on the back of stereo speakers, on the bottom of your oil pan. The magnet will attract and catch metal shavings preventing them from cycling back through your engine. Just remember to take the magnet off before an oil change so the shavings can drain out with the old oil. The magnet trick also works when stuck to the bottom of your fuel tank, for keeping rust particles from getting from your fuel tank to the injectors or clogging up filters.

@@davidpeters8813 I'm not aware of if,or what kind, of magnets are in a typical hard drive , but my guess is the it would have a small surface area. Also, people seem to be emphasizing the power of the magnets. I have to caution that just a moderate size/strength magnet is all that is necessary. Especially one that has some surface area such the flat round magnets 3-6 inches in diameter that come on the back of stereo speakers. Using strong magnets such as rare earth magnets could lead to cracking your oil pan/fuel tank if you have trouble pulling it free from the tank or you let it go and it makes harsh contact with the tank. The magnet just needs to be strong enough to hold itself in place and capture small metal shavings and/or rust particles through the floor of a thin walled oil pan or fuel tank.

Great follow up. No one ever seems to post those. If you had first wrapped your magnet in plastic cling wrap, like you'd use on leftovers, or stuck the magnet inside a finger of a white latex glove; you could have removed the wrap from the magnet and been able to see the debris left behind much easier. I learned that trick as a kid after I spilled BBs on a shag carpet. The wrap made the BBs MUCH easier to remove from the magnet! Now I keep a strong magnet wrapped in plastic wrap for picking up nuts, bolts and washers that get spilled on my shop floor.

@@watchinyoutube8919 He doesn't like using it for the same purposes it was used here because the sludge it broke up could get into the oil holes, clog them up and lock up the engine before you know it. The Car Wizard feels the same exact way. However, there are people who get good results with it like this and since it's just a farm truck I'm sure it was well worth the try. He got the opposite results, freeing up his oil flow. Scotty also likes another product more than seafoam but I forgot what it is. It is sold as a two pack with oil and fuel additives, and they don't as much break up the sludge as they slowly break down (melt) the carbon which is much less dangerous. Also, I noticed a new Lucas Oil Stabilizer product that isn't so thick and is for more modern OHC engines at the store the other day and I'm about to get get me some and try it.

I have added seafoam to the gas at oil change for years. Recently I added some to the oil and waited 100 miles. Then changed oil, the engine had about 150,000 miles and the restored power was very noticeable

@@toxeia Should work to help resolve the issue if lubrication is the problem. The lucas replacing a quart of oil + seafoam at the recommended amount for the oil capacity will clear things up over a week or 2 of daily driving. I found doing that and a single tank gas treatment each oil change keeps the valve train noise to a minimum if not helped restore engine power and lubrication. As less garbage is floating around in the fuel system and the oil.

After watching your video I decided to perform the same service on my 22 year old Mercedes-Benz C230 4-cyl that was running good, but just a bit noisy. After spraying the Seafoam in the hot engine I let the car sit for several days before driving it in order for the Seafoam to do it's best. Well! I didn't expect the huge performance boost, nor did I expect the engine to run so smoothly. The change is outstanding. I'm sold! Thank you for your efforts, and my car thanks you as well.

Had similar issues with my 1993 toyota 4x4 pickup. Over 225k miles showing. 22re efi 4 cylinder engine. Used the BG 115 MOA and BG 109 EPR. It comes in a combo pack. Did the 115 cleanse and then fresh oil fresh 15-40 synthetic oil and new toyota oil filter. 600 miles later (2 tanks of gas) I am amazed at the increase in power. I can now drive the speed limit on the interstate and it stopped using oil. Hwy MPG went from 15 to 24.5 which it does in town. No oil leaks to report. The truck just feels Happy. I've said it many times, Seafoam is the most amazing product I've ever discovered for aging ICE vehicles. I got turned onto Seafoam in the early 2000's, I wish I'd of had it back in the 1970 & 80's when I was working on cars all the time. I used seaform before oil changes in my crankcase & in my gas several times per year on my vehicles. It's just an amazing product.

Today I've tried Engine Restore (Thanks to him) and after 40km i Think and half an hour of cooling down and restarting it to drive back home. the engine felt like 18000km younger (125cc bike with 1st piston and 26000km) 10,6bar instead of 12,5bar (+-0,5bar) i hope i get it to 12bar and if im lucky and ive got a good one i may get it back to 12,5 or 13 bar :D

Yes greatly appreciate the video's and recommendations when it comes to our vehicles. Women get taken to the cleaners more then you know by very dishonest mechanics....saying things need to be replaced when they don't,and often I have had things disconnected so I can bring it back and have them yet again tell I need something usually expensive replaced when I don't. I've only ever driven a Ford Truck and I have even had a Ford mechanic at the dealership cut vacuum lines one time....disconnected my speedometer cable another time,took out a fuse another time.....and it's so frustrating to go through. So my dad and six brothers started teaching me things about the vehicles I drove and drive now and they have been my mechanics for decades. So now I know much more and I help them in making the repairs as well. My dad has since passed on and my brothers and a nephew who was trained by them all helps me now. My husband doesn't know a lot about the inner workings of an engine. So at least we have people we can trust. But believe me ......there are many unscrupulous mechanics out there who do over charge women and especially elder women too and again have parts replaced that don't need to be and disconnect things. So guys if you have a wife or sister or daughter or niece or aunt or grandmother....look out for them when they have car issues and make sure they aren't being railroaded by greedy mechanics if you can't fix the issue for them then find an honest mechanic to help them out. I absolutely love this channel I have watched every video over the past years and i make notes and love all the ingenious tests that you do to really test a product to its full potential and capacity or show many times that we're paying ridiculous prices just for the name of the product rather then for its quality. Around 5 years ago I saw your video where you added it to the oil on the Ranger... My 99 Corolla had a little rattle on the top end, and I tried it. Sure enough, it quieted down. Even since then, before every oil change I do, I dump a third of a bottle into the oil and drive around for 15 minutes or so.. the rattle is still gone, and it certainly can't hurt. So, seafoam in the oil for a drive before an oil change is a win in my book.

Thank you for this video. I am ashamed to say that I paid the Ford Dealer almost $1,000.00 and they did not solve the problem. Sea Foam cleared multiple cylinders miss fire, multiple error codes, including one for the O2 Sensor which the dealer had replaced. Amazing difference in performance and no error codes after about 80 miles. I wish I had stumbled across your video before I went to the Dealer and allowed them to replace a coil pack and a oxygen sensor, thanks again!

@@patrickevans201 Carbon buildup is possible in engines with as little 30K - 60K miles, especially if you do a lot of city driving and buy regular 97 octane fuel. All it takes is a little drop in compression on one or two cylinders and the fuel burn is no longer efficient. Carbon removal and freeing sticky lifters may not help if there are worn rinds or a burnt valve. My Expedition has 157K miles and the older the engine the more likely it is that there are other issues also. I was lucky this time.

I also have a random missfire on cyl 1. I have a little lifter tap when i first start it.also a little sluggish running rich.i changed coil packs ,plugs,wires fuel filter ect.its an 03 chevy silverado with 327,000 miles!!! Im thinking of sea foaming it just a little nervous

This is an older video but I know you read all comments and I just saw it!! Look at BG products, proven effectiveness and a complete range of products!! I have personally used their BG 44k for years and seen real increases in performance and gas milage. Also try Lucus SYNTHETIC oil additive instead, it's nowhere near as thick!

Hi bud, first off just wanted to say great and informative content!! I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it but Lucas oil also makes a synthetic stabilizer which works better in colder climates than the regular stabilizer, same benefits thinner formula. It's what I use up here in Canada, works perfectly!!

Hey man, got a pro tip for you. They make lots of funnel strainers for filtering debris when you're trying to find shavings, particles, etc. Or if you want to reuse a product (oil, coolant, etc) but don't want to dump dirt and debris back in an engine. But my tip isn't just the funnel strainers, but instead a close cousin. Go to any autobody supply store and they hand out dozens of 'one time use' paper/metal mesh paint strainers. They fit perfect in a funnel, you can throw them away, they're usually free, and they filter much finer (smaller micron) than some funnel strainers. Autobody paint guns are finicky so they need clean paint, and those strainers do just that. They also filter every other liquid product in my garage as well. Been watching you for years, and love your videos, sir.

Dude, I bought a rusted out old Toyota Corolla with almost 400k miles that was *HEAVILY* abused its entire life... It had a freaking shop rag crammed into the crankcase where the cap should have been, oil all over the motor, the worst lifter noise I've ever heard, and the car was in about as bad of condition as it could ever get before sending to a crusher. Immediately after Seafoam, all the noise and running rough stopped. I did all the standard routine maintenance and ran Seafoam for 300 miles before each oil change, with oil changes every 1,800 miles. I drove the wheels off that thing for nearly 2 years, including driving it 940 miles from MN to OK, and then sold it to a friend, who drove it for another 2 years. That car would have been toast within a couple hundred miles at best without Seafoam

So far, I've only used a can of this in my Mini Cooper - and boy has it made a difference. It was so low on power that I had to turn the AC off when going up hills. Now, the power is much more consistent and the engine seems to sound smoother. Thanks for this video !!

My old ranger did the same thing. The shop told me it was notorious for the 2.8L and there was nothing they could do for her without spending loads of money on a beat up truck. I sold her three days later. I wish I had found this video before. I loved that truck. 4x4 that just crawled through anything. Slowly however but never left me stranded.

Seafoam has never failed to impress me. Considering this is a year old, it's probably just as well I got nothing to add on a product for compression. I've tried various limp-along "solutions" in the past, but nothing that didn't end up being something to waste money on before rebuilding the top end. I guess that's actually kind of a product recommendation; new rings. It's unfortunate that's the one you were trying to avoid. if you find something that works, I'd definitely watch a follow up video on it. Great videos by the way. Your channel is one of very few, I've never suspected of shilling for profit. I didn't see the first video of this follow up, I don't know that truck, and a Ranger actually did me wrong once, but I caught myself starting to worry the verdict on shaving contamination was going to go the other way. I was even more surprised when I realized I was thinking, "Go little truck! Go!" during the test drive. I guess I must be a fan. Or, maybe I just need to get out more... Either way, keep up the great work!

I'm a huge believer in Seafoam. Usually every springtime oil change, I pour a bottle of seafoam in the gas tank and spray a bottle through the intake. I do 2 oil changes a year on both mine and my wife's vehicles, spring and fall, which includes the same seafoam treatment on both vehicles. My truck is a 2002 F150 with a 4.6L and has 294,000kms or about 183,000 miles. It runs very smooth and does not burn and oil. I believe there is close to another 100,000 left in it. My wife has a 2003 Windstar with a 3.8L and 200,000kms or about 124,000 miles, I've been doing the same seafoam treatment for both vehicles for the last 7 years and have not looked back.

About 15 years ago, I used Z MAX in my engine with my oil and after about 100 miles, I noticed the engine perked up and began to run like it was brand new. I had a 2001 Chevy Silverado then. The truck engine continued to run well all the way up to the day I traded it in with 111,000 miles. It was the best additive I ever used for an engine. I would suggest that you read the instructions and do some research about it. This way, you will know exactly how to use it for best results for your engine. Every engine is used different. The ZMAX is also extremely slippery. I also used some in my transmission.
