It's the two-fingered salute that's meant to be related to archery, not flipping the bird. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign#As_an_insult It's a uniquely British and Australian insult though which, among other historical points, makes that unlikely (otherwise it would probably be used in the US as well).

On the other hand, the Greeks did have trading colonies on the Black Sea. The Scythian women of southern Ukraine are the most likely source of the original Amazonian warrior legends that were later reinforced (for Europeans who loved to record history) when colonial era Europeans explored Africa and Brazil. While female warriors may have been a big thing longer, earlier, and even better in Africa, when you go looking for the source of the Greek myths about them, you have to look at the peoples who existed at the edges of the world know to the classical Greeks.

I wouldn't put too much praise on the Spartans. Their most formidable skill throughout the ages was making up stuff about how formidable they were. That said, I think the notion of the women not being allowed to get married before proving themselves in the same way their male counterparts have to bears a certain beauty. I'd also like to think that domestic violence might be less prevalent in a martial society that endures constant hardship. If you live a dangerous life, you value peace and harmony much more, generally speaking. Sure, there'd also be the issue of portraumatic stress, but I think our ancestors had their own, often harsh, but also effective ways to deal with that to a degree. In short, I'd love to have a first hand account of actual life for Samartians/Scythians. In hopes it wouldn't be as disappointing as most other cultures essentially were, once you stripped the fancy made up stories away, they surrounded themselves with.

There are examples of knights who had few prospects if they stayed at home riding off to survive as "adventurers" of a sort. The tournament circuit was quite profitable if you were good at jousting and/or fighting in general. Some knights - William Marshal and Ulrich von Lichtenstein are examples - made themselves famous on it. Others would ride from war to war, fighting for whichever side was able to pay them and if they were successful attracting followers also in it for the money - members of the De Hauteville family from Normandy ended up establishing themselves as rulers of southern Italy (and then Antioch after they took part in the First Crusade), after fighting for both the Lombards and the Byzantines and then starting to seize territory for themselves. Others went into piracy or banditry, which could be profitable too.

That was my understanding. That in the Hundred Years war (?) that archers in the English army would have their index and middle fingers cut off if they were captured. So they used the revered "V" symbol to show they were undefeated.

@Cary Boy Actually they did not kill them. Cutting the fingers ensured that they could no longer function as archers and also that the Brits would have to use resources to care for the permanently injured archers.

Not mentioned in your commentary is a story that mentions that the Amazon sided with Troy during the Greek and Trojan war. It is the end of one engagement during a battle where my story begins.

There's actually a great book about this, called Searching for the Amazons: The Real Warrior Women of the Ancient World. According to the author, Scythian women were allowed to hunt and go to battle if they were skilled enough (in contrast, all able bodied Scythian men were required to fight). However, women were limited to the use of medium range bows and wore skirts, whereas Scythian men wore pants and also allowed to use swords. Apparently archeologists can tell whether they've dug up the grave of a Scythian warrior woman or man based on whether there was a sword or pants. Women were also forced to stop hunting or fighting after marrying or giving birth. I'm surprised you didn't include the story of the Scythian Queen who, according to one Greek (and probably unreliable) source, beheaded Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great. Most books on warrior women seem to include this (although they often forget to mention there were about 20 different recorded deaths for Cyrus. Apparently he died during multiple different battles in different countries, or asleep in bed, depending on the source.)

Christine Schwarz It’s an excellent read and not only goes into detail about how the Amazon legend probably developed from the Scythians, but also the mechanics and necessary skills for successfully launching arrows from horseback (for instance, you have to hold the arrows in your free hand rather than a quiver if want to shoot rapidly enough). It also highlights instructors who offer lessons today.

It was giving the two fingers (middle and index), I was always "told" was something to do with long bowmen :/ so the tale goes.... one army was cutting the fingers off the archers of the other army, if they caught them! So after every loose, the archers would hold up to fingers as an insult.... or something like that!! But fact's , opinions and old people yarns and tall tales can sound very similar at times :) lol :)

Yeah, I have never heard that story about the middle finger. Always the two fingers. I have never thought of them as the same gesture. One finger is kinda contemptuous, while two fingers is more of a mocking gesture. We use both in Ireland but in different contexts

I had heard that the British version of “the bird”(middle and fore finger held up in a reverse peace sign), was know as bowfingers and arose from the French cutting off English longbowmen’s bow fingers. Could it be that the history of the two synonymous gestures got muddled together?

Tomyris was an ancient ruler of the Massagetae, a Scythian pastoral-nomadic confederation in Central Asia. She became famous for her bravery and especially for the greatest battle she ever fought - the day when Cyrus the Great died. Tomyris’ kingdom was located in the area to the east of the Caspian Sea, in parts of modern-day Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, western Uzbekistan, and southern Kazakhstan. Most people remember Tomyris for her role in the defense against an attack by Cyrus the Great of the Achamenind Empire (600/ 576 - 530 BC). In 530 BC, she may have killed one of the most famous Persians in history. ......... (this is an excerpt from Ancient origins - Natalia Klimzcak)

For anyone who likes to know : Amazons indeed were of an Iranian race (the Scythian subgroup & then the Samaritan subgroup after the Scythians started to vanish) but the word *Amazon* itself doesn't refer to a race at all !!!! Funny isn't it ? My whole childhood was a lie !!! loool *Amazon* is the ancient Greek pronunciation of *Hamazon* which is an ancient Iranian word meaning *warrior* (just like how we call *India* today which is *Hindu* in Persian & hindi itself, the *H* gets dropped) Iranians & especially the Persians were known to give extremely high amount of values to their women & therefore their Hamazon ranks also included many many warrior women !!!! The Greeks however especially the Athenians & Spartans were known to be quite the opposite, Athenians even resented & hated women in armor & therefore while warrior women were a norm for the Iranians, for the Greeks they were more like a myth & legend & they always depicted them in a way that eventually a Male greek demigod would defeat them !

Lets remember the Spartan Women were very able to defend their home and families when the men were gone. So the idea of "warrior women" is not far fetched. The removal of a breast........ I knew about the Greek connection to the middle finger, but what about the two finger salute? That’s the one that I had heard may have come from archers.

Commander…, how many people will die FREE MASON………, or not??? You have to ask such a [Question] / * \ when the Stadiums are going to be used to “pile up” [{**}] dead bodies as these 5G Microwave DEPOPULATION {Radiation Towers} +=+ surround us at our every move??? You do know that when you put water in a “Microwave Oven” it can boil that water.?.?.?, and since these are nothing more the Gigantic Colossus “Titanic” MICROWAVE TOWERS called 5G for their New World Order Survival of the Fittest “Eugenics” [{*}] of the United Nations INTERNATIONAL MAFIA of these “freemson lodges” in our home towns, I see at least 95% total human “decimation” for PROJECT BLUE BEAM…….., and their “Great Day” from the COLONY TV Show on “Netflix” in Season one… Why are TRUCKS……., and “18 Wheelers” still in Perpetration when all else is shut down??? They have to get rid of “all product” before EASTER…..., so there is “no more food” to feed anyone from India to Japan from Germany to Iran from New York` to Whuhan where these 5G WEAPONS were Tested “and proved” ULTIMATELY LETHAL just as this same technology was used in The Great Nuclear Hydrogen War of 1853 T.L. to 1854 T.L. and so even “as we” cut wires….., there is not enough doing so….., and why is this??? Think about the WALMARTS where “they count you” as you come and go..., and what is the real purpose of that??? The POPULATIONS have already been Decimated.., and so now they need “Proper Counts” as the U.N. Troops will be sent to OUT NUMBER YOUR when they have all the COUNTS from these MAIN WALMART STORES that “most communities” will be forced to enter to get supplies., and this was “all worked out” in 1961 T.L. when JADE HELM 15 the Artificial Intelligence Computer Program “made all believe” in FAKE SPACE as any whom knew we lived inside a Celestial Sphere FLAT EARTH “had to be” put in them RED FLAG LAWS of 1893 T.L. where ALL THE GROWN UPS were murdered, and Only Child Labor and INCUBATOR BABIES Remained just as all we “16 and older” are to be put too death if we think we can hide THE EARTH IS FLAT and that all Nations “are run by” Demoniacally Possessed Entities called Incubus and Succubus, and they have the WEATHER WEAPONS to use as we see on The Impossible Channel, and even Truth Stream Media showed there was a [WORLD GOVERNMENT] long before the League of Nations and today's PRODUCTION of all the World “is a Stage” known as These U.N. FLAGS!!! Theretofore, we whom are “of and for” OUR WORLD REPUBLIC CONSTITUTION Coalition are all that remain of non “Demoniacally Possessed” HUMAN BEINGS!!! Look at the Tech, drive and look at the TREES as these plants try in vanity to Avoid the POWER LINES that have something “very evil” and deadly in it, and look at all the GROUNDING WIRES for massive {Power Surges} too Cause BLACK OUTS as these 5G TOWERS Stay on and “kill all life” as your TV PEOPLE are all in Under World Cities and D.U.M.B.S. ready to “live on” as we The nonmason and even “foolish” Free Mason HUMANS all die…. You need to be more thoughtful “of the Insanity” and Lunacy we all face, and PREPARE your Soul, your Spirits, and your PERSON “to do” what must be done, so your Communities go on for a FAMILY Alone is still a Family “that will die out” without Marriages…. The Commander~ [///|||\\\]

If memory serves (which is hardly a given), that bit about the middle finger being based on archery is simply a confusion/conflation with a DIFFERENT gesture - one that shows off both the index-finger and the middle-finger, like a backwards 'V for victory', and which remains in use, if a touch archaic, in the UK. That one, I believe, was originally spawned by... SOMEONE'S habit of cutting those two fingers off captured archers in order to prevent them from ever drawing a bow again. Don't remember who. I THINK it was something the english used to do to welsh longbowmen?
@Pocketfarmer14 жыл бұрын
When the English “ flip someone off” ,they use two fingers. That gesture ,legend holds came from the English archers besting the French crossbow men at the battle of Agincourt of 1415.

Yes, I concur. I think people have got that story confused with the gesture commonly used in the US. I was told that the French had said that if they captured English archers they would cut off their draw fingers. Hence when the English won they waved their two fingers at the captured French to rub it in that they had them. I was told this by a teacher who demonstrated the gesture, much to the shock of the class opposite who could see him apparently gesturing to them to F off through the window having not been able to hear the story.

Never heard that Flipping someone off was from the finger thing in bowmen, but Ive heard countless times it was a uniquely British thing for the V sign, for cutting the fingers from french bowmen(sorry my history sucks, I cannot remember the war it s meant to be from).

I watched a documentary looking for the modern day ancestors of the Amazons. They found them. some of the horse riding archers of the Mongolian mountain tribes had some hints of blonde hair. Their art work was still sewn into their clothes exactly in the same patterns that had been done over a thousand years ago. The women are still master archers and put on a demonstration to prove it.

It's the two finger salute (used as a threatening gesture) that was related to archers having their string pulling fingers cut off, that I'm familiar with; largely between the English and the French, around the time of the hundred years war I believe.

Concerning flipping the middle finger, I have seen (in Britain) that the first two fingers were held up. I think this is where the archery myth comes into play as well. There was a famous news reporter here in Detroit that got involved in a scandal. When he was being photographed leaving a building, he made the two-fingered gesture (with the “backs” of the fingers toward the audience). Reporters commented that he “gave them the peace sign.” No, he was flipping them off in a sophisticated way. The peace sign has the inner part of the fingers facing out. The myth continues...
