it's mites. I treat with oxalic acid because it is not really a pesticide, but does not pollute the hive with chemicals and so far mites die 72x's faster, or that many time more toxic to mites than honey bees.

Thank you Darrell for all your videos,were in the uk and have a three hives and three nuc's . The main hives are cedar and two of the nuc's are poly. The nuc's are empty at the moment,we're going to use them in the spring,but my main concern is that our main hive was really strong and we did three treatments with oxalic acid using a vapouriser. The main hive has re queened itself late in the season and it's going to be a close to whether it makes it through winter. I definitely recommend using oxalic acid over other treatments as there are no harm done to the bees,honey brood or capped honey. A cheap and quick easy way to treat for varroa.

Daryl, I am surprised that you split the bees so late in the season, but can I ask you, did you do this because you still had plenty of nectar and pollen around then, or was there another reason?
@ruthannjones5873
@ruthannjones5873 6 жыл бұрын
66otnt In an earlier video the hive was trying to swarm. He moved the queen to a 5 frame with plans to combine if they were not successful with a queen. I'd say he was surprised to find eggs.

Im confused. I thought the queen emerges from the bottom. If the side is chewed it was a worker took it out (something wrong/diseased) or another queen killed it (kills competition)?
@dfishman76
@dfishman76 5 жыл бұрын
She does come out of the bottom of the cell. The first queen goes around and kills the rest of them by chewing out the side of the cells

I checked both my hives that I installed packages into a week ago and they are both laying I got eggs and larvae in both hives, but, one hive already has supersedure cells in it so I took them out but, the funny part is last year the hive I had there did the same thing, do you think it might be the location, its just strange

Very interesting Darrell, I just love to watch your stuff. I feel like I learn something new every time. My questions are what do you use to treat the mites? I know there are several things out there and I don't know what would be the best. Also, I had a man tell me last weekend that he treats every year for preventive maintenance, what are your thoughts on that?
@dfishman76
@dfishman76 6 жыл бұрын
I don’t treat at this time but I need to. Most say it’s better not to treat unless they need to be. Not 100% on that

darrell, i watch a lot of your videos and bee videos in general. on this one something looked funny to me and i finally placed my finger on it. if you look at the movement of the bees, they look like they are moving in jerky movements, kinda like a housefly moves, just looked a little odd to me from other videos of healthy hives i have seen. is it just me? could it be something with the mite problem? i swear nothing else looked like that on the video like your movements, so i didn't think it was the video. what do you think? i watched it a couple times and that first frame at 1:37 is when i noticed it.
@dfishman76
@dfishman76 7 жыл бұрын
Scott Schoepflin if it's what I am thinking it's called the waggle dance. It's how the bees communicate
@chomershaphal6674
@chomershaphal6674 7 жыл бұрын
well at first that was what i thought, but that wasn't it, i watch the video of your split in october where they were making queen cells, and the bees in that video were moving more fluid. it almost made me think like they were confused. it was on more of the frames of that hive, and did not look like the waggle. just jerky movements walking all over the frames. maybe just an illusion.
