This is the pure spirit of every Bluegrass Festival. Musicians JUST finished their set then naturally just go off into the crowd & start jamming w the locals.

What a great way to honor the audience than by playing in their center. There are some fine musicians in this group . Laura Orshaw's and Avery Meritt's fiddle solo's were incredible as was Sierra's mandolin solo,. Don't know who the other guys were but they lit is up as well. This does represent the heart and soul of America.

Been in this business since 1947 and this is has got to be the best jam session ever and I have been all over. so much fun to watch Jeff Saunders on the bass. Sierra has got to be the most educated and the most progressive mandolin player in the world. Hint: No one else could have learned all the ( My Bluegrass Heart) tunes.

Real musicians don’t need a stage or a plan they just need their instruments and a song. I was at a country music event with my daughter (2006??) and there was a ‘private’ little stage show between “acts” where different musicians were doing a little impromptu one after the other. Interesting but not…outstanding. Until Craig Morgan came out. He called up some of the others from backstage and tried to do a little jam with them. Craig was the only musician- the others just performers- and it flopped bad. Nobody could just pull it off, no jam skill. That little jam on the dirt with Hull and the others was over the top and fun, great to listen to. Real musicians.

Don't know for sure, but I was at what may have been the source seed for this type of performance. A few years back I worked the 25th Anniversary Party for Asheville music venue The Grey Eagle. It was held at Lake Eden, with back-to-back stages on the lawn sloping down to the lake, alternating sets. Sierra Hull opened the festival. About halfway through her set, there was a loud "POP!" and the sound system croaked. Sierra did not miss a beat, grabbed her mandolin, jogged off stage right of the platform (just like here), leading her band to finish the set 4-5 rows deep in the center aisle of the audience.

In case y'all haven't figured it out, it really is Sierra's show. A real star. A legend in front of you. The real deal. And you live in her times, and she , in yours. And this happened because she led everyone to it, cause she's a star & other players will follow.

Ah, I used to go to a bluegrass camp and whilst I studied under some of the best names in the business - the jams on the lawn (and later in the bar) were so good, and you never knew who you might be playing with/alongside/after. Once, a few beers down I was impressed with the mando player to my right - hadn't seen him before, but he was good. I learned later that he was John Paul Jones. Oh, BTW - I want the banjo player's shirt!

WOW!! What a performance! If that didn't wake the crowd up nothing will! Half a century ago I played in a trio called the Phallyc Phusilleers - don't ask why, I just did - and we were gigging to raise money for Greenpeace. As we approached the first rest interval the building was hit by lightning and all power was lost to the PA systems. So, we got the crowd to shuffle their tables around and we stood in the middle to complete the evening. Many folk thought that the best part when we got down amongst them and an intimacy developed between us and our audience - blooming GREAT night indeed!
