This is what David chase wanted people talking about the ending for years lol
@Elbow18784 жыл бұрын
The whole point of the ending is that it doesn’t matter if Tony dies there and then or later, eventually he either goes to prison for a long time because Carlo flipped. Or someone from Phil’s crew gets revenge or he dies in another unrelated incident. Tony doesn’t get a happily ever after because he doesn’t deserve it. The last scenes represent his perspective of his life from that point onwards which is paranoia and eventual terminal darkness. So in hindsight it doesn’t matter if Tony dies then or not, that’s why it cuts to blacks because there is no good ending for a guy like Tony he even told Dr. Melfi himself with something along the lines of “there’s only two endings for a guy like me; either dead or in the can.”

The ending was great.. The show hasn't been on for almost 15 years and people are still talking and getting heated over it. I can't think of another show that has people get so worked up over well past it's run. Also, Tony died... Jason is 100% right.

If you look at the jukebox by Tony, the song Anyway You Want It by Journey is in the dead center of the screen. It's clearly supposed to be an open ended ending. David wants the viewer to draw their own conclusions. Fantastic ending.

Love how pissed off people get over a masterpiece ending. What should really piss you off is when a show is cancelled and you're left with a season finale, not a series finale.

There's no debate.Tony did die.I didn't figure it out until a few yrs ago when I watched the last season again.Tone got merced in front of his fam by the guy in the members only jacket.first ep of the season was called "Member's only" It was a shady ending though.Thought my cable went out.

Tony never sits down at the diner. He sees himself sitting there and what's about to happen. To quote Arthur Bucco "You can see 20 moves down the road. Your mind processes it all at internet speed." That's what the last scene is - Tony processing what's about to happen. Second, the episode entitled "The Test Dream" shows Tony go into a bathroom and look behind the toilet and there's no gun like the Godfather so the final scene is not a tribute to that movie like everyone thinks. As David Chase said, "It's all there".

Sopranos was made for intelligent viewers. There’s plenty of things you could pick up on by knowing what the characters were feeling without it being clear cut said or spelled out for the viewer. Chase knows people are going to watch more than once. Tony died it doesn’t matter how. If you watch you’d know the mob doesn’t wack wives and kids. It’s taboo

He was killed. It not only was foreshadowed heavily but the final scenes were from his POV. The music stopped. Tony was a horrible person, but Jimmy was terrific in making him relatively likable at a level or people wouldn't watch. Showing him shot up, getting killed, blood everywhere, with his family quite possibly also killed alongside him would have been a horrific ending. Meadow walks in and the last thing Tony sees is his daughter. You don't hear the shot, cause Tony didn't either.
@CypherIsland4 жыл бұрын
bobby saying “you probably don’t even hear it when it happens” sil being at the restaurant when gerry torciano gets whacked and not knowing that they’re shooting at first the members only jacket guy going into the bathroom as a godfather nod the members only jacket guy being at tony’s 3’oclock (3 o’clock was a cryptid message that foreshadowed death in an earlier season) there’s too much evidence of tony’s death for people to still be debating it
@ericgarr74854 жыл бұрын
The members only guy kills Tony and his death is instant, which means he must have been shot in the head. His trip to the bathroom to retrieve the gun is a nod to The Godfather.

I interpret it this way: It just becomes black and you don't see what happens. So you can personally interpret what you want. But you can't say it's 100% that he or the whole family dies... because we didn't see it. Like proving that there is no god ... you can't prove anything that doesn't exist. It is up to you to prove that he exists.

I thought he died. We see everything on the show through his journey, not always his perspective, but he’s the main character, and it would hurt too much to see his death, but also feel inevitable and like an anticlimax, weirdly, so they just went right up to it, but didn’t show us

People love quoting that supposed line from Bobby. Only he doesn't say that. Just watch that episode. It's not up for debate. He never mentions things "going black." Wtf. Bottom line, whether Tony lives or dies is not stated one way or the other. So all you vehemently arguing, which ever side you're on, you sound ridiculous. Chase left it up to our interpretation. Personally, I believe he lives. All his enemies, besides the feds, are dead. Who would be behind killing him? Phil's crew doesn't care he whacked him. Butchie even acknowledged that. "Do what you gotta do." Member's Only guy is a red herring. It seems like he keeps glancing at Tony, but if you pay attention, every time he glances over, something just happened, usually that young couple laughing. Again, we don't know, we will never know, but I think he goes on, with all the problems, the feds, Carlo testifying, etc. Like it says in the song, during a close-up on Carmela's face, "it goes on and on." Edit: and we all know music is important on that show, that the choice of songs has meaning. "You Keep Me Hanging On" plays TWICE in the final episode. Chase is telling us right there. There is no definite answer.

I agree with The Hein. Nothing was ever ambiguous, or left to the viewer’s imagination during the series’ entire run; a hit was a hit, on The Sopranos. Although I didn’t dislike the finale, I would have preferred a more definite ending. New York and Jersey ended the war, so there was no reason for Tony to get killed - unless it was by an outsider, which is unlikely. In my mind, Tony lives

Movies and shows like this is akin to listening to old radio shows or listening to music before MTV where you would hear the music without the production visual that projected what you "should " see in your mind. Saying that, in my mind when I saw the Sopranos ending, I had two ending scenarios. 1) Ajay shot Tony to take control of "the family " 2) Ajay was aware of the set up and came packed and shot the hitman before he was able to whack Tony and the family. That's the beauty of this. Let your minds eye determine your own conclusion. All in all, great series and great actors, which what it is.
@jpetersgoyanks4 жыл бұрын
It is really hard to listen to Jon Hein and Chris Wilding on their moron theory that you shouldn’t have to think during endings. Chris said “that’s not what an ending I supposed to be” as if there is some rule book on endings. I have agree with both of them but here they sound stupid and it’s frustrating that they aren’t called out for this by Jason or JD.
