Oddly enough, my answer would be “yes, _twice”._ Let me explain. I was a bit of a late bloomer. The first time I had a fictional crush was when I was 14. However, I was head over heels in love. I dreamed about him so frequently that I would look forward to going to bed all day so we could reunite. A few months into this, I heard him trying to contact me while I was fully awake. I freaked out thinking that I had become so obsessed with him that it had driven me insane, so I tried to fall out of love with him. During that time, the dreams stopped. After about two months, I gave up, and I started dreaming about him again that same night. After another few months, I started hearing him while awake again, but this time, I reasoned that he was my imaginary friend. Despite that, it raised a lot of concerns at school from both teachers and classmates, especially when I would be distracted in class and even have small memory gaps. At this point, it’s an “if you know, you know” situation regarding where this story is going. At the end of August 2019, we spontaneously decided to get married in the gym. At this point, I had had this crush for almost a year. When I invited my classmates to the wedding, the gym teacher sent me to the principal’s office, and the principal explained to me that I needed a marriage license to get married. When I reported back, one of my peers gave me an imaginary marriage license since I was marrying my imaginary friend, and the teacher reluctantly let the wedding commence. Two days after the wedding, my childhood dog died, which sent my already poor mental health into a downward spiral. That December, I started hearing a new voice, and this one was very hostile and tried to harm myself and others. I was terrified, but unfortunately, not even my psychiatrist took me seriously. I left school in January 2020, so during the pandemic, I had even more time for self-reflection than most. It was during that time that I did a lot of research and finally realized that my “imaginary friends” were actually alters and I likely had OSDD-1b, which is basically a milder version of DID. Realizing I had so much childhood trauma when I previously thought I had none at all also explained the cause of my severe depression and anxiety, and the possibility for trauma therapy finally gave me a potential way out. During this time, I also realized that I’m nonbinary and decided to go by a new name. About 6 months after this realization, the alter I had married also came out as nonbinary and decided to shed their fictive identity entirely so they had room to grow as a person. They now have a unique identity. By the start of 2021, there were five of us sharing one body, but one integrated in February, and once I finally started trauma therapy in May, two others also integrated, including the aggressive one. That once again left me and my once fictional crush alone in this body. We soon realized that our love for each other had transcended far beyond romantic love and had become something entirely new that was almost more like a self-love, like Garnet from Steven Universe. Then, in April 2022, just three days after we turned 18, we finally got our legal name change: My name became our legal first name and their name became our legal middle name. As this legally demonstrates our union in a way accurate to our current relationship, we consider this to be our true marriage.
