It's time! We hit the road with Oliver! We are super excited to go look at these Clydesdale mare prospects! We are hoping this is meant to be and we bring we bring home a new horse with us! We aren't going just to look at the mares though. We are also taking Oliver along for the experience, hoping to get some advice on teaching him to pull double from an experienced Clydesdale trainer. We also get to go on a wagon ride with the Verner Family 6 hitch Clydesdale team!
Oliver is a three year old Clydesdale stallion that we rescued back in March 2023 with the help of our viewers. He was very sick when we first got him and REALLY Underweight. He has come a long way and made a full recovery from EPM. He is now well and strong enough to start training to pull and eventually ride (Of course with the ok from our vet and chiropractor). Oliver has had quite the journey! Make sure to watch his other videos to catch up on everything! This is where his story begins • Oliver's Auction - Fir...

That's an interesting observation. However, remarkable stallions Secretariat & Man O' War were large, whereas well-known geldings Mine That Bird & John Henry were both quite small but unusually tough and fast. So that rule of thumb isn't always true. Just a couple examples

What an amazing opportunity/fieldtrip for a family moving into Clydesdales/driving. I can only imagine the power you all felt riding on that SIX horse team -- what a treat and a thrill and to come along vicariously through you. Good for you not buying another Clydesdale just to move ahead -- you absolutely need just the right fit for Oliver while Nattie finishes growing and may not end up being a good match for Oliver. Oliver is your north star, your constant, so while I can imagine it very hard to resist the urge to just pick a partner for Oliver it has to feel right for you vis a vis matching up with Oliver. And hey, it won't kill us to go looking at more beautiful Clydesdales with you and your lovely family. Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us. :) love from Canada, Ontario :)

I had my first intro into driving teams back in the 1970s. Belgiums and Belgium-crosses. I had aquired a veteran parade trio, was looking for a fourth and possibly a fifth/alternate. I wasn't looking to breed, and driving wasn't entirely new to me at the time, but big draft teams of four and more was undiscovered territory. I had previously incorporated ground driving as a part of my training for young ponies and horses destined to be sold after finishing as a way to broaden my market and produce superior equine companions. I figured it couldn't hurt and it did keep things more interesting for both myself as a trainer and the horses/ponies as the trainees. Worked a charm, and I really did want to go further with the driving aspect of horsemanship. As I got older I found it to be easier on my battered body as well. I only had one Clydesdale, ever, but I did appreciate the size, ability, good mind, and amenable personality of the breed. At that time you just didn't find very many Clydesdales in my area as compared to the number of Belgiums. I did eventually breed a couple of Belgium/Friesian/Clydesdale-cross saddle mares that I used for my personal go-to trail mounts, pack horses, parade rides, farm drafts, and pleasure harness horses. Those two girls would do anything for me, with joy and good humour. Brave lassies, the pair. I took one with me to learn jousting (yes, I hoped to be a Knight is shining armour. I was then ignorant of how uncomfortable armour is for females.) and she was fairly coveted by the instructors themselves, even allowing for my own ineptitude. I hope your journey alongside your draft horses is as prosperous and joy-filled as mine was. Looking back now, it was amongst my most wonderful of all my time with horses. And that's saying a lot. Blessings from Texas.

I was so excited that this video was finally posted. Such a nice farm, lovely carriage ride, beautiful horses, nice accommodations, father son time late night fishing, a mini vacation. But even I felt that none of the mares were meant to be yours. There was no connection with you, spirit to spirit or soul to soul like there was with Oliver and Nattie. And I think that is the key component too. If your supposed to get another mare or maybe even a gelding for a teammate I believe God will make it happen. Love y'all. Enjoyed the visit to the farm. ❤😊

It is the calm and thoughtful insight into caring for horses that I love. I will never own a horse. We have a dog-horse in our huge 200# Irish Wolfhound. So on a very small scale I sorta now what it is like to have always loved dogs, owned dogs and have finally owned my spirit animal. We have learned so much in caring for him. So I respect your channel for the diverse knowledge you give. And yes, Oliver is the best Clysdale ever and Saxon ( RNoble Carnasserie Ssxony’s Havoc)the best 😂 Irish Wolfhound.

I like folks who train animals with kindness and caring, and he’s fantastic with horses that have issues. I pick up tips for dealing my dogs! JR and Steve treat their horses with firmness and intelligence. No cruelty. Homestead horsemanship and a few others should be proud of themselves in showing the world the right way to train and treat these wonderful animals. And all of us can learn something about how to train and treat the animals in our lives.

The Verners have a beautiful ranch & some very beautiful Clydes! They were very kind to provide such wonderful accommodations for the family & Oliver. As for not making a purchase, well, it’s your farm & your horses. If you’re not getting the warm & fuzzies, then it’s best to take a pass. If something is meant to be, it will be - Oliver & Nattie are living proof of that. ❤❤

JR, I'm really glad you are getting some professional help here. You need to work on handling your lines, and hopefully this gentleman can help you. You've done an excellent job of starting Oliver so far, but sometimes your rein handling skills worry me a bit. If a horse gets the drop on you and starts to run, you are going to be flatfooted and helpless. Learn to keep your hands closer together, and shorten your lines up a bit. This will get easier as Oliver learns to get up in the collar and stay there, so that your distance doesn't keep changing. With your hands closer together, learn to reach across with your pinkie finger and anchor the opposite line, so you can slide your rein hand up the line to shorten it. This skill isn't so essential when you are driving a two wheel cart, but in a four wheel vehicle, you have to be able to change your line length almost instantly, because the distance between you and the horse is going to change as you make your turn. Shorten the line on the side toward which you are turning, and let the other side play through your hand as you turn. When you finish the turn and straighten up, hook the other line and slide up that side to reclaim the line you allowed to play out, and let the line you took up slide through your hand. Get good at doing it on either side. You need to be able to slide up a couple of feet, quickly, when you get ready to turn. There is a device called a "rein box" that you can easily build for the purpose of practicing and for building up your hands and arms if you want to drive a big hitch like that. The Fairman Rogers Manual of Coaching, which I coveted when I was younger and couldn't afford, is now available for free online and is a great resource. archive.org/details/manualofcoachi00roge/page/330/mode/2up Bernardette looked like she might have been a little stringhalted, or maybe she had a rough foaling at some point. Her lameness looked like it might have been up in her hips/pelvis.
