Re. The cost of the cars mentioned: you don’t need to spend hugely to have fun. My $2,500 daily driver Karmann Ghia is 53 years old and doesn’t handle very well, or go very fast, but is just so charming and fun. Gets better reactions than the expensive stuff in my experience…It’s a 356 on the cheap (at least that’s what I tell myself). It’s nice, but not pristine, so I don’t worry about parking it and bits are readily available for same prices. Wish I’d known years ago that you don’t need an expensive vehicle to get such enjoyment!

Motoring "professionals" of all stripes regularly trash cars for not handling. Surely part of the fun of driving in a willing manner is overcoming a vehicles cornering abilities. Part of my driving education was hurrying a 1958 Morris Oxford Estate. Its virtue was that it would slide in such a lumbering fashion that there was plenty of time for a tyro to rescue it. Most cars are not intended to go fast round corners and off a race track it is probably reckless to try. It is worth looking at standard production racing in the 1970s to see which cars were successful in their (usual capacity) class. New Zealand in particular throws up winners like Vauxhall Victors (2 litre or better, 3.3 litre) and Chrysler Valiants.

In the 61 years of my clean licence driving experience; I've had an awful lot of 'classic' cars. From Rolls Royces to MG Midgets. My daily driver is an 18 year old Lexus GS300 SE-L which is a truly amazing car; but to be honest, I'd be hard pressed to name the best classic. 3litre Vauxhall Senators have to be in the list. Along with Rover P5b, the saloon, not the coupe. My budget won't run to a Ferrari, but show me a Ferrari that can catch a Nissan R32 GTR Skyline anyway. my last R32 would do in excess of 200mph! I don't think there is such a thing as a 'worst' classic car; simply because owners bring their cars up to the very best they can be. It's just a matter of personal choice. For instance; I'm about to buy a '94 Lincoln Town Car; it's in fabulous condition and with its 4·6 litre Mustang engine it should go rather well too. I doubt any of you would entertain such a car, but it's my choice, and for me, nothing else matters.

They sold a lot of Marinas (including one to my parents) because pretty much everything else was terrible too. There was a reason gold was a popular colour in the 1970s - it hid the rust. Got to agree, Defenders are appalling. Prototype number one had a centralized steering wheel because it was designed to replace a tractor. Trouble is when they moved the steering wheel to the left or right they didnt widen the body, so no arm room….. ever. You have to drive with the window open so not designed to be driven in the rain. Also never designed to be driven on tarmac. Just awful. Built for probably 40 years too long. Get some common sense and buy a Discovery 1 or 2. Just as capable and far more pleasant to drive. And not so ridiculously over priced !

Classic cars ar things like XK120's, Alvis TD, MGTFs, Triumph TRs etc. Alegros and Marinas are mass produced cars for the family man and were built for that purpose. They may be 'collectable', but never a classic.

This is about European cars…….hmmm? As a USA driver since 1965, I’m surprised that this video made it to the USA. My opinion of these cars was not much. The early Saabs (1950’s) were cute but not for the USA. The Porches of the 50’s were ok. The rest were at best poor, except the Sunbeam Tigers. The Alpha Romeo’s good for 3 years and then rust heaps. The others that made it here were about as good as the Jugo’s. Need I say more? PS: The XKE’s in the 60’s, were cute, but only for the rich, too costly to maintain. PPS: Most Europeans do not use their cars on a daily basis, here in the USA cars are used daily. We drive them, not look at them.

Morris Marina was a good car, or at least decent. It´s purely a british thing this constant mocking of the Marina. Outside Britain it doesn´t have a worse reputation than other british cars. But as Britain was a superpower in cars they have anxiety for their car industry that disappeared so they blame the cheap supposed best sellers for the fall. Of course Marina & Allegro had difficulties replacing the 1100/1300 which was the most sold car in 60s Britain, but they weren't even close to as bad as some brits nowadays say.
