How do people react when they suddenly realize you can understand what they are saying in a foreign language? How about multiple languages? I went across the US and Japan speaking English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean to see how people would react.

She comes off natural because she's not bullshitting people probably lol. She's genuinely studied Chinese for years and lived in the country, has a Japanese husband and lives in Japan where she speaks the language. She doesn't learn a couple of repeatable basic sentences with questions and answers to edit videos and make it look like she's fluent in 60 languages lol.

@クレヨンクリスちゃん [Crayon Kris] EXACTLY. Most of the "polyglots" on KZbin can't read or write the language they are making videos about. Speaking a few common phrases is enough for them to post titles like "Surprising people speaking their own language perfectly".

@m price, exactly. If I went by the number of languages I know phrases in, I would be a super polyglot; when, in reality, I only speak 4 and write proficiently in 2 (English and German).

Transitioning from one language to the next is tough. I write poetry in English and German. If I interlace German words into a mostly English poem, I have to stop and think... since the structure and metaphoric meanings may be lost in the translation. Jumping from language to language can be a completely different, complex thought-process.... and is actually more impressive to me than actually being able to speak the different languages.

I'm a native English speaker who is very impressed (and a bit envious) when people can speak many languages. It always makes me laugh when some people think Anming is Russian 😁

@Oriental Pearl That's a good idea, it seems you at least partly learned Chinese and Japanese by living in those countries and interacting with the people around. I was like this too. I mean, I don’t just speak English. I already speak two languages, which are Bulgarian and Spanish, but I’ve kinda known them since I was a baby as they’re my parents languages so it didn’t really feel like I “learnt” them yk?? But I decided to actually learn a new language last year, which is mandarin. For a few months of learning the language, I felt like I wasn’t making any progress, so I started watching movies and listening to music in the language. If I happened to watch a movie or show in English, I’d put the captions in mandarin, and doing that for a month made me gain so much more progress than what I was doing before. This is what I really recommend doing.

Everyone was blown away by your linguistic skills.:) Amazing! I think the Chinese sign you held in the beginning of the video reads from right to left, thus 五福临门 or "five happiness arrive at the door." When you lived in China, you might have seen this kind of signs written this way on public gates/walls-an ancient way. But once the writing becomes an article, it would go from top to bottom and right to left. Only modern Chinese reads from left to right. Great video!

you should go to the country side and learn their dialect when you get the chance to do a program in korea. i'm curious what you think. technically, we do have one tonal dialect but it's still korean and can be understood if you know the context(but every word that uses a tone means something completely different). by tones i mean, there are 3 tones rising, neutral, falling. since i personally don't speak a tonal language, i've been curious what people who did learn a tonal language thinks about that dialect. the specific dialect is from gyeongsang-do

This was fun! I always like these videos where you get to surprise, shock and amaze others with your skills. Hey, congratulations on being able to travel not only to Hawaii, but also to the Lower 48! It's awesome that you finally got to visit your family again! How long has it been for you since you last saw your family while in the U.S.? I know that must be difficult. Good luck with all of the Korean learning. You really are very gifted and I am really jealous. Well, envious. My brain just does not do what it used to do in my teens. I was an information sponge and I picked up German in High School (Except for the Math part of my brain, everthing else seemed to work decently). Other CRAP happened that made me miss out on German classes so I did not get to complete all four years, so I did not get to go to Germany with the others. And then, go figure, I had nobody to speak in German to or with after I was done with school. I got rusty, them basically it corroded so bad that it is just gone. I barely remember how to count to ten and my memory fails worse by the day. Anyway, I am very happy for you, Anming! :)

I subscribed for both of you! I'm so proud of both of you! I am English, Irish, Scottish, German, Finnish and Jewish. My ex-husband is Puerto Rican, African and either Chinese or Japanese, unfortunately his family doesn't remember, so our three children are very mixed! My sons both married Filipinas and my daughter married a man who is part Native American! I started learning Spanish, Puerto Rican dialect, in 5th grade so I speak it pretty fluently. I read and write it as well. I can read French pretty well, although I can only speak a little right now. I know a little German and a little Sign language too. I am making quilts for my family now, 2 down and 11 to go, but I plan on studying languages again asap. My oldest brother is in a Nursing Home, he is blind and has memory issues, but when I visit him we speak English, German, Spanish, French and Sign! People are very surprised! I truly admire everyone who studies other languages! Blessings to all in love and light!🙏🏼💜🙏🏼💙🙏🏼🧡🙏🏼💛🙏🏼💚🙏🏼

Vietnamese will definitely be interesting to learn in the future. A lot of ppl don't know that there's a huge borrowing of Chinese vocabulary in the language. Lots of traditions are also similar such as giving out red envelopes on Lunar New Year and eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

You’re right. I want to learn it for that exact reason. It’s going to build on the knowledge I have from Chinese.

That's so cool you were here in Hawaii!! Wish we had run into you while you were here so we could've shown you some of our favorite spots. You're multilingualism is very impressive. I'm newly subscribed to your channel. Lived in Taiwan when I was younger and would love to get my Mandarin skills as good as yours.

You're literally living my dream, being able to speak multiple languages like that on a conversational level. I only know Filipino and English, and that's only because they're mandatory to learn in our country as the first and second language. I hope I could learn another Asian language one of these days, preferably Japanese. 😊

Anming, you are amazing. There are no words to describe how well you have mastered several languages. I could see you as a interpreter at the UN . I am from Louisiana,my mother spoke fluent French as her first language,English as her second language. She never taught it to myself or my brother or sisters. Back then it was discouraged, now it is taught some, but Spanish is in the fore front as a foreign language taught in school. Southern Louisiana roots are French, but Spanish leads in school language taught, blows my mind. At 65,I am trying to learn French and speak some. People who hear me speak French, say I speak it naturally, that I must have picked up on some listening to my mother speak it all those years.

I have been learning English more than 12 years, and I never get that level of perfect like a native speaker. You spoke multiple languages all at once, and that is incredible performance. You spoke very well in those foreign languages, Its awesome. Great skills. I envy to your foreign language skills . Perhaps you need another foreign language. Bahasa Indonesia. Indonesian language. Keep up the good work Greetings from INDONESIA

Wow so fun. I want to be as confident. I did say happy new year in korean at a korean restaurant recently so I was glad I didn't chicken out. Also earlier I was listening and was surprised you were speaking in Korean but then I realized, oh wait, that was Japanese but I understood it. Guess I haven't forgotten all the Japanese I learned even though I've stopped for a few months. Hyper focused on korean for now as I prepare for the TOPIK test

I love how happy people look when you speak their language, it inspires me to learn more! I've had a few encounters like that with French, it's so nice. My Japanese friends have been helping me with my Japanese, and they've been so kind and supportive. I'm teaching a bit of ASL in return (a lot of my friends have been asking about it, and while I'm not fluent, it's nice to be able to teach them sign and some Deaf culture)! :)

I just stumbled upon this video and was very impressed by your language skills. I was also inspired to learn one of those languages. I've been in Japan and learned how to say a few things, and also have the Chineasy book that explains the Chinese characters, so I'm curious, but I'm too busy with family etc to be able to plunge into one of the languages. As a translator I already have a few languages (Swedish, Finnish, English, Spanish, Greek) but always hungry for more. Thanks for a nice video!

Well, well, talk about opening doors by speaking someone‘s native language! That is so quick, a few phrases and kind words or compliments or even a joke here and there, and all of a sudden you are in a completely different position to their souls. I adore you and your skills, Pearl. You are absolutely fear and ruthless, love it. 😂 Hugs to you both from Uruguay ♥️👍🇺🇾

I watch your videos and other language videos now and then, but even though I might really like to be able to speak Chinese or other great sounding languages, I'm too much of a hermit to ever get any real use out of doing it. But I love seeing the cheerfulness and to see different people's light up when they hear someone speak their language who is not from their location. Great video. 😁👍
