There's a hidden moment of emotion between Harry and his Aunt Petunia. When Aunt Marge was insulting Harry's parents and ranting about how James was a no-good man and Lily was too good for him, Aunt Petunia politely laughed along. But when she started on Lily, Petunia stopped smiling. This subtle moment shows that although Petunia resented her sister, she still missed her. This is further confirmed in a deleted scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, when Petunia tells Harry, "You didn't just lose a mother that night in Godric's Hollow, you know. I lost a sister.". This line adds depth to Petunia's character, who is otherwise portrayed as cold and bitter towards Harry.

Petunia's contempt for Harry largely stems from her jealousy towards Harry's mother and her own sister Lily. Petunia and Lily's parents preferred Lily more over Petunia and with Lily discovering her Magical heritage, it was as if Petunia was completely ignored thus fueling her resentment. Her resentment turned into Hatred once Lily chose to befriend Severus Snape (overruling Petunia's objections) and Dumbledore (in response to Petunia's letter) rejecting her (Petunia's) request to study at Hogwarts. However despite her own resentment towards her sister, Petunia was never seen / heard insulting her (Lily's) memory in any way. This was in contrast to her husband Vernon, who missed no opportunity to trash on Harry's parentage.

Exactly ! Petunia wouldn't have been too upset over Marge trash talking Lily and basically calling her inferior, as she herself called her a freak. Petunia is horrible towards Harry: not only he's the son of the golden child Lily, but he has magic powers, the same magic powers she longed to get. I can understand her: Lily and Petunia's parents made differences between the two sisters and she lived in the shadow of beautiful, smart, gentle and magical Lily. I think that's why she treated Dudley like a little king, because she didn't want her son to feel abandoned or unloved like she did. However, deep inside her, she still loved her sister but couldn't get over her resentment to raise her nephew with the love he deserved. In the end, she regretted this, unlike Vernon Dursley who is a nasty and stupid man. Perhaps if she had married a kind and tolerant man, she would have turned different, would have learnt to forgive Lily and treated Harry with love and respect.

Petunia resents Harry for a lot of reasons first because she could never be the mother Lily would have been to Harry. Next Harry after 11 years of abuse and neglect was still kind and became the light of everyone life around them Dudley was a downright bully. I think the main reason is because Lilly is the light of everyone’s life she like Harry were the kind of person who made people feel better be better. Petunia didn’t want to go to hogwarts to study magic she wanted to go to be with Lily. That’s why I think Petunia could never show Harry because she would have to admit she misses Lily.

No I think she felt she had to for what would people think, and out of fear that if she didn't she'd get visitors. Or it's people who read the book and understood it better than you did... "She stopped and looked back. For a moment Harry had the strangest feeling that she wanted to say something to him: She gave him an odd, tremulous look and seemed to teeter on the edge of speech, but then, with a little jerk of her head, she bustled out of the room after her husband and son." J.K. later confirmed that what Petunia said in the deleted scene was what she had actually on her mind in that moment but didn't have the guts to say it out loud. Therefore those who complain about the scene being left out are nearer at the book as someone saying she had no mercy at all.

I like to believe that the Potters are a fairly taboo subject in the household and is why they're rarely brought up and if so, dismissed with a simple car crush for instance. I actually understand why Vernon and Petunia said it was a car crash though. They have no other way to explain how her sister died without questions being asked. After Petunia dies, Harry finds she kept the blanket he was found in as a baby and left it for him so he knows that he was loved. He even visits Dudley with his family every year or so. I forgot where I read these facts exactly, but while Petunia comes off as jealous and petty and Dudley is just a spoiled brat, and Vernon, who possibly might not be effected by the blood spell that protects Harry and his family, and who likes everything to be ‘normal’, I think if he wasn’t there, by whatever circumstances, Petunia could let go of that resentment and hurt and be able to grieve in a healthy way, and maybe even Dudley would be better with the circumstances, like maybe the two would’ve grown up sharing a room and Dudley wouldn’t have bullied him so much. Or I could be wrong and Harry would be a bully. I have no clue. I just think Vernon was a huge part of the problem, especially when Lily and Petunia tried to take him and James on a double date. Because they weren’t Normal enough for him and he didn’t want to be around his girlfriend’s sister.

IRL how many kids die on battlefields @ the same age as Harry was during the Battle of Hogwarts? He was also willing to sacrifice himself and Snape. It was a horrible decision but it was a case of the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Voldemort and his crew would have happily killed many children, no doubt torturing them first. Remember, his moto was always "for the greater good", he just turned it from domination to protection. The problem is that people thought he was a grandpa when he was actually a general.

@oscarluna7238 Did you read the books or watch the movie? All the information is there. ✋️🙄 Harrys' Aunt, Uncle, and cousin were mostly affected by Harry because of how long he was with them. Also, Petunia was incredibly spiteful and jealous of Lily. Petunia then marries an arrogant bully, both of them then spoil the crap out of Dudley turning him into a raging narcissist. All of these inherent qualities were amplified because of Harry, and the length of time he was with them is a huge deal. Ron also had some iffy qualities, and I think his was envy. He displayed this in the Goblet of Fire. Also, after the 3 of them had to flee, Ron was disturbed with fear. As soon as Ron left them in a hissy, he admits his change of heart immediately after leaving them. Hermione was the least affected because I think she was just inherently good. It was her that suggested taking turns with the Horcrux, I think Hermione figured it out pretty early on what was going on. She was the intellectually savvy one in the trio.

No. Petunia didn't give a dime about Lily. If she had, she wouldn't have abused Harry. It's good that the scene was deleted from Deathly Hallows. It makes no sense whatsoever. Petunia: "I lost a sister that night too." Okay? And? You had 17 years to make your wrongs right, Petunia. Instead, you chose to abuse an innocent child because of your own petty contempt and hatred for your sister. Abuse is abuse. It is inexcusable.

I think that has more to do with Vernon and petunia at least. Quite fitting really. Harry lived in fear 10 years, they spend about a month for the next 6/7 years minding their own behaviour or else

If it had been my sister and me, although I would be envious that she can do magic and I don't, I wouldn't allow that to get between us. I follow the idea that since Harry is a Horcrux, the environment around him would always be toxic. Petunia did care a lot for Harry in the books, and Dudley grew to love Harry after almost of the horcrux’s were destroyed. Harry would have been in a safe home if he really was just an adopted nephew, petunia loved her sister and wouldn’t actively be cruel to a baby. In the books Harry was still addressed by the family and loved, just in the absolute bare minimum way that Petunia would a child of her sister witch she had to keep hidden.
@anoukmazoyer4947
@anoukmazoyer4947 Жыл бұрын
I largely disagree. Petunia had enough respect for her sister memories and sacrifice to take Harry into care, but she didn't care about Harry's development and well being. In his concern, she only cared about her neighbouring image. Otherwise Mrs Figgs wouldn't apologise to Harry in the fifth book to have been such a boring nanny for him to keep an eye on his well being from the Dursleys, whom wanted to throw him in the street few minutes laters when they learned Voldemort was back and after Harry. Petunia backed down only by fear of Dumbledore. Dudley came to respect his cousin because Harry saved his life from dementors and sympatic to him after reevaluating his education after Dumbledore visit in the sixth book. The Horcrux theory doesn't work espescially here, Dudley came to change after only 2 of the 8 parts of voldemort was destroyed and Harry was still an active Horcruxe at that time. If the Horcruxe part of Harry justify his mistreatment by the Dursleys why wasn't it the case with the Weasley, Mrs Figgs or Gryffindors common room? Plus the Horcrux Harry didn't have much fighted to protect himself from Basilic venom or Gryffindors sword or controlled others for its benefit compared to the other Horcruxes whom had defensive charms put on. Harry had mostly control over it except for occlumensy. I find it a lousy theory to justify bullies being bullies, even if there is reasons behind every behavior it doesn't erase their responsabilites from their actions!
@mardigrassnowballs3258

My completely unsupported theory is that Petunia may have had a small crush on Snape. My only scant evidence is that she was spying on Lilly and Snape, and when she was caught Snape, used magic to injure her and was also very cruel to her. This might’ve been one of the last straws in her severing her relationship with her sister. Lilly was beautiful, Petunia was not. Lilly was magical, Petunia was not. Lilly was accepted into Hogwarts, Petunia was refused entry by Dumbledore because she wasn’t magical. Snape loved Lilly, Snape hated Petunia. I don’t know something about her reaction when being caught spying and her embarrassment over the letter to Dumbledore asking to join Hogwarts. I always felt that part of the reason she was so jealous of her sister was because her sister was loved by the boy she liked. Anyway, it’s just a theory😂

Petunia despite jealous of Lily, loved Lily and misses her. The only time she said anytityn negative about her was in the first book when she called her a freak for being a witch. But other than that I think Vernon was really the worst of them all, and it was because of Vernon mostly that Perunia maintained an antagonistic person towards Harry. Even Dudley had a redeeming moment in a deathly hallows deleted scene showing genuine concern for Harry, whereas Vernon just couldn’t care less.

Grief can make people do horrible things. Petunia for all her faults took Harry in and had to look at her dead sister's eyes every day. Petunia was the only person in the world who could have taken in Harry and she did. Petunia also knew she could not let herself get attached to Harry nor could she 100% know that Deatheaters were not visiting her house. The stress of taking in Harry was huge after Lord Voldemort fell as well as taking care of her own son and her husband. Not an easy task. Why were there really no pictures of Harry up? so if any wizards or witches happened to visit when the whole family was out. There would be no trace of him. Also, why would Petunia want Lille's eyes staring at her all day on the wall? Harry is enough. Mrs Fig really was a huge help to Petunia when Harry was small.

I think they were extremely close before Lily's magic came between them. Petunia was jealous of her magic but also resented magic for taking her sis away and making them different (which has always been a huge thing for us humans, hating or fearing those different than us especially by the time represented in the story). At that point she was a child and is understandable, at least to some point. When she grew, the resentment beat the jealousy, IMO, but she still loved her sister or at least wished to have her idea of a sister with her and not away in some different world that she couldn't be a part of. Then her estranged sister died taking away the possibility of getting her sister back or even making some kind of amends because of that same world an leaving her with a child to make sure she remembered every time of all that trauma. I do not justify her but understand how she makes sense in the story. It is my opinion that the ministry of magic are the true 'bad guys' of the wizarding world story.

And it really suggested to me that there were a lot of layers behind the way she was spitting those lines out. And like that she was really building up the venom in them before spitting them out. Petunia was so much more than she was portrayed as. In the book, Petunia shows some emotion also when Vernon is insulting Lily. She was jealous and petty, but she loved the sister she had as a little girl and had some guilt that at the time of Lily and James' deaths, they were estranged. Also, Petunia never insults her sister, except to express that she was a freak, when she tries to talk Harry out of going with Hagrid. Petunia knew that Lily was a good person, even if she didnt like Lily or understand her magic. She did not like people talking about Lily in a negative light. James she attacked with ferocity, but Lily was safe in her heart.

In The Order of the Phoenix book, there is a really moving scene after Dudley is attacked by dementors. Harry is explaining to his family that Voldemort came back to life during the events of the Goblet of Fire, and Petunia reacted, started crying and asked "Is HE really back?!" It was such a deep and touching scene as we see Petunia being genuinely afraid that her sister's murderer was back and could harm people again. That one scene in the book made me respect Petunia a lot, almost redeeming he completely (not fully, but you know)

I think it runs a little deeper than that. Yes, she laughs along with Aunt Marge when he mocks Harry and she looks uncomfortable when she mocks her sister but it is a) because she spends most of her time pretending she never had a sister and b) because Marge also says "if there's something wrong with the bitch, there'll be something wrong with the pup" and "bad blood will out" (the Muggle equivalent of calling someone a Mudblood, if you will). The inference, indirectly, is that there's something wrong with her too and by extension Dudley. In "The Order of the Phoenix" it is made clear that she understands what Voldemort returning could mean. due to the loss of her sister. Immediately, she clutches Dudley, just as Lily would have done for her own son.
