You can read this article -> www.treehugger.com/trees-leaves-lobed-unlobed-leaf-key-1343485 to learn more about leaf lobing. Have you noticed this feature of oaks before?

Is that the same reason mulberry trees have different shaped leaves?

This has been proposed, but I don't know if we know that for certain. Great question! If anyone has more info, please let us know! :D

I believe the Mulberry has different leaf shapes normally. The same as Sassafras trees.

Oak leaves in California look completely different, small, oval, shiny with serrated edges. I had an argument with an ex over it. He kept insisting that what was clearly a California Live Oak was not an oak.

My golly that makes so much sense now. Thank you. I was struggling to identify trees/species because of this.

Another way to identify oaks is that white oaks usuall have curved or lumpy looking lobes, while red oaks tend to have spiky or pointed lobes. Red oak acorns tend to carry more tannins than white oaks, making them smaller and more bitter, and in some cases almost dangerous to eat if you don't boil them enough and perform enough water changes.

To clarify what @Mohawkmaster5728 is saying a little further… The species of oak are split into three sides within the genus. The white oaks, red oaks, and the golden oaks (which you won’t find in Eastern North America.) The three oak families are distinguished from each other by tendencies to have characteristics normally found on one side of the genus or the other. Mohawkmaster, I’m not trying steal your Thunder. Just trying to inform the others who don’t know :)

That's interesting that there would be different shaped leaves on the same tree. Nature is amazing and magical!

This is quite interesting thank you for this. I am from the Midwest originally and currently live in SoCal and they've got California Oaks with zillions of tiny leaves and entirely different tree structure than what I grew up with in upper Midwest which look more like the leaves you show here

One could say that leaves are analogous to people! Some leaves are very shady & way more shallow-they seem to like darkness better; while other leaves are more open & more deep-those leaves seem to like the light of The Son better!
@snakewithapen5489
@snakewithapen5489 Жыл бұрын
Except no leaf likes darkness- they all want the chance to bask in the sun, they just start out in different situations, some leaves being closer to that fortune than others

The "competing for sun" argument doesn't make much sense though, it's all on the same plant, why would one leaf doing better than another benefit the tree at all?
