Also helps the actor fucking nailed the cold unfeeling machine on a level most people don't even know about. He practiced everything so he wouldn't blink or breath no matter what he did.

To put it in common sense context, of course a bike is eventually faster, but acceleration from 0 of this little bike and filming speed was adequate for normal running behind and keeping the actor distant. However, Robert Patrick prepared physically so well for this role that after the first shot they asked him to run slower. He mentions it in some interviews that you can google.

That actor was something else. They had to reshoot that one scene he shows here because Robert Patrick kept outrunning that bike. And as someone else has stated he trained himself to not flinch, hold his breath and not even blink for long periods of time.

Including blinking while shooting, which I think might have been part of the reason Schwarzenegger always had sunglasses for the T-800. He also would move his head as little as possible, scanning with his eyes because.... well why would a robot be inefficient and jerk around?

Really a fantastic actor. If I recall correctly, he basically just walked in and stared down the casting team while he did his audition. They were intimidated enough that I can't remember if he even had to wait for a callback.

I think the best practical effect in the movie is when Sarah Connors rooting around in the Terminators head in front of the mirror. It wasn't actually a mirror, it was the actresses twin sister and a dummy head

Back in the 90s there was a show called Movie Magic. One episode they talked about all the effects in T2 and had a bunch of behind the scenes footage. When the T1000 gets shot in the head as he approaches the elevator that was a practical effect as well.

CGI ABSOLUTELY CANNOT replicate how skin reacts to the environment. Sweat, dirt, humidity, etc. You SEE THAT in the characters in every scene. That's just page one of a thousand on why practical beats digital

Still though, the fact that they had the actual face of the Alien looking back at the actors gave more realism. You can tell some of them were actually creeped out by it. You don't get that from a dude in green with white dots all over.

My favorite practical effect was when they shot ocean scenes for the old Godzilla movies with miniatures in water and slowed it down. Really gave the water a realistic weight.

100% it’s amazing with the tech available and a dedicated fanbase still to this day that only the original two movies still hold up as note worthy. You could of course make a worthy argument for 3 & 4 but it just feels like such a rocky road after that. Even if it continues to get worse there’s always these two legendary movies.

I used to work in a related field. The simple reason is that it is expensive, takes alot of time to make and reset and the talent needed at the right time and right space is hard to find. (No movie has a lifelong employment). Quite literally saw the downfall of practical effects teams moving into visual merchandising or going private.
