I have to mention that I played botw in Russian.. And this quest is really mind blowing in my language. The riddle in English: "The little twin steps over the little river. My cave rests above that river’s source." The riddle from the russian version: "A young bridge appeared over the river, and in its upper reaches a white dragon roars at night". What's wrong with the translators? For hours and hours I have been trying to find a bridge that didn't look as old as the others. I searched across all the places where three dragons flew. I tried to guess which dragon was considered to be white. Maybe Farosh? Or Naydra? It's definitely not a Dinraal. And I was able to solve it only after a look into the English text of the quest.

Its not the Russian translation that is bad, but the English one. The English translation of Botw dumbed down many things, this riddle is just one of them. The other localisations also have the white dragon part in it. The white dragon is the foam of the waterfall that is at the source of the river.

You said that they had an extremely simple riddle that they must not have been trying to solve, because it's so easy that they must've already known the solution. The only problem I have with this theory is that the game is full of easy riddles that people can't seem to solve. The twins aren't any different from them. Oh, I thought Misko was going to be a Zora, since Zora canonically live over 100 years and the first treasure is at the top of a waterfall, which Zora's can swim up. My theory regarding the twins, since the treasure you get doesn't amount to 100 rupees if you sell it (If I remember correctly), is they're selling you the riddle to scam you out of your cash.

It's also possible that Misko lived more recently and actually stole the relics after the Calamity, but whatever vault or museum the relics were in either collapsed or was blocked by rubble afterward, like much of the rest of the castle.

Honestly, the idea that these random strangers pass on the title of a super rad thief is both hilarious, but also kinda cool, since they just so happened to pass it onto another legend, which is the hero. I dunno why, I just imagine them just being all happy to share the title to the next generation, only to be told later that “DID YOU NOT KNOW WHO THAT WAS?! THAT WAS THE GREAT HERO, WHO SAVED US ALL”, and them just kicking themselves.

I like the theory, but I think there might be a better explanation for the brothers not solving the riddle. They made it to the rivers source, but there wasn't anything there. Keep in mind, players see loose rocks and think to bomb, but normal people likely wouldn't see anything as out of place.

What if they weren't passing down the title of Misko, but Misko the bandit originated as a concept JUST AFTER the castle fell to try to rescue artifacts and relics that Link the Fallen Hero (from 100 years ago) may need when he awakens or is resurrected? BotW is full of figures from the past that are all too willing to assist who they think the hero is. The quest COULD be a trial, but only to ascertain whether an individual is worthy to be the next Misko OR the hero themselves.

This is a world where ghosts exist. Not just that, but they can physically interact with the world. Naysayers may point at lack of ghostly flames but the King did not always have the flames, he was very capable of looking like a normal human. The "best" explanation is a huge stretch for this theory. Easy riddles being "unsolvable" is a common trope of The Legend of Zelda, it's not even the easiest riddle in that game. So the brothers being stupid is par for the course on a game which has people literally making the legendary hero run errands that they could easily take care of themselves. I know theory making is supposed to be overthinking, but you guys didn't bother contextualizing it from a game perspective. Is this normal for a Zelda game? Aye, I say aye. Mirko's ghost hoping that giving him the items back(through his journal) will return them to their rightful place is a much better explanation, IMO anyways. Maybe he is stuck as a ghost and returning the items to Link, the legendary hero who is about as connected to the Royal fam as they come may free him. Sure, there is no evidence towards this but for all the stretches you guys are taking, my theory is about as good

My impression was they were just selling random riddles that they either heard or thought up to travelers to make a quick buck (they even use many swindler’s tactics) by using the Misko story to say, “Hey, the treasure you might get would be way better!” and Link just gets lucky by getting a riddle that actually points to Misko’s treasure hoard. When Link gets the treasure, if you tell them they dismiss the possibility which I believe is like a way for them to try and keep the con going. “That guy didn’t actually find Misko’s treasure, he was lying!”

I think its also fair to point out that there are hints that people in the current day in BotW's Hyule do brave and pillage Hyrule Castle from time to time. There are several people who have accurate information about whats in the Castle and the only way to really get that is for some one to have gone in and seen it.

It's an interesting theory, but to my knowledge there's no solid evidence that Misko must've been alive 100 years ago? As Parcy at the Riverside stable stated, people used to venture into Hyrule castle to loot for goods such as the royal guard's weapons, it could be possible that Misko made their name during this period after the great calamity from finding these treasures, and would make more sense for them to be alive at the time of Botw.

Also in the diaries, Misko refers to the locations of their hidden treasures as "ruins of Hyrule Field", "village ruins next to a farmland where many people once gathered", which supposedly wouldn't be "ruins" before the great calamity, and therefore strengthens the hypothesis of Misko being alive currently, and in turn the possibility that they stole the treasures after the calamity.

If Misko is still alive he has a very bad habit of leaving his things sitting around in odd places, or just losing them. Whoever they are, they aren't very good bandits if they are leaving their journals around telling where everything is in random places.

It could be possible that the riddle itself was passed down to them by the previous Great Bandit Misko, as a test to see if they were worthy of the title, but they couldn't solve it, so they didn't know where the treasure was and eventually gave up on finding it, so they happily gave it to Link for 100 rupees, since it was useless to them.

Extra interesting. Take both of their names, and scramble the letters to find some interesting anagrams. Worth looking in to, because Breath of the Wild loves using anagrams; especially with the shrine names. Anyway. Between both of their names, there are letters that can be arranged to spell Misko. A common way to keep an identity secret is an alias, and if I remember right... groups of thieves often used to do just this by scrambling their names into an anagram to make them harder to identify or catch. D "OMI" da "K" Pris "S" en They can also spell Prison, Mikado which means August gate (also a termfor the emperor of Japan) and a few others. Their names also contain the phrase "dido" which means "a mischievous act". Prissen can also be arranged to mean snipers. Snipers are a person that takes aim and fires from a distances or great height, and the cave is an obscure place up high, ideal for a sniper. Misko can also be arranged to spell mikos. An odd pluralism for miko, who where shrine maidens or shamans.

When it comes to canon the most important rule is "Does this affect the main story in any way?" So Misko the Bandit doesn't affect the events of the story of BotW at all so no it isn't canon but more of a glorified Easter egg hunt. You always look at the content's connection to the main story when considering whether it's canon or an extra fluff. The same can be said with the game's connection to the Zelda timeline. Like take the important story details of BotW and look for a timeline that has all of them like: 1. Triforce is in the possession of the Royal Family(as shown by Zelda) 2. Zelda's naming being a Royal Tradition 3. The Temple of Time still standing 4. Both Nabooru and Ruto being mentioned as Sages and have Divine Beasts named after them 5. Ganon being a foe for the Royal Family of Hyrule for Ages The timeline placement gets easier to find when you have main story bits lined up like this.

This is very off topic, but I think I may have figured out why the Zora turned into Rito. Salt water. In all cases that we see Zora, it’s always fresh water like rivers or lakes. There is the Zora in the original that seem to be in the ocean, but since we don’t actually know if it is an ocean, I’m not gonna count it for this. In WW, the whole kingdom is covered in salt water, and yet the Zora are nowhere to be found. This leads me to believe that the Zora can’t live in salt water. The one exception I can think of to this is Majora’s Mask, but since Termina may not even be real if the Link is dead theory is true, it may not count.

This theory is a cool idea, but I'm not sure if it really works, since the EX journals can be found before starting Prissen and Domidak's sidequest. It appears as soon as you leave the Great Plateau and reload the game.
