Diddy Kong Racing - Krunch Playthrough/Longplay

Krunch playthrough/longplay of "Diddy Kong Racing" (v1.0) for the Nintendo 64.
PLAYING NOTE: I deliberately (attempted to) avoid using boosts as much as possible for the normal races and silver coin challenges. The only time I use them is when I'm getting the key to unlock a battle stage, and when I'm doing the trophy race. 10 bananas are more than enough to win normal races and silver coin challenges. Yes, bananas do increase the top speed of the character you're playing as.
No save states or tools were used.

- Weight Group: Heavy
- Acceleration: 1.0 ~ Very Low
- Handling: 1.0 ~ Very Low
- Top Speed: 4.0 ~ Above Average
Krunch is a Kremling and member of the Kremling Krew.

Rules of play:
- Mostly minimal boosts for normal races and silver coin challenges.
How the game works:
AIs cheat by using a power up whenever you do, as well as honking the horn. 60% of the time, there is always a chance you will be hit by a homing missile. If you get enough distance in 1st place, the AIs will stop hitting Zippers behind you, as well as driving into traps and not being effected off-screen, including them not getting stopped by the bridge off-screen in Boulder Canyon.
Car tips:
To drift, turn first, and then hold the R button. During that time, turning can be controlled. Braking while drifting is required, especially for heavy characters.
Hovercraft tips:
Only use the R button for sharp turns. DO NOT hold the R button when going straight forward. Do not hold Down on the analog stick either. Doing either of those things WILL decrease speed.
Plane tips:
To turn sharper, use the R button. To do an upwards loop-de-loop, tap the R button twice. To do a downwards loop-de-loop, hold Up, and then tap the R button twice. During that time, depending on how long the R button is held, it can last up to 1 second. After that, it finishes with a boost. To do a barrel roll, hold either Left or Right, and then tap the R button twice. While doing barrel rolls continuously, let go of the accelerator for greater boosting.
Green boost tip:
To get a green boost, let go of the accelerator before either hitting a Zipper or using a blue balloon power up. During that time, wait UNTIL the multicolored smoke disappears, and THEN accelerate again.

Out of all the normal races and silver coin challenges, the hardest one to win using as little boosts as possible is the silver coin challenge of Windmill Plains! That race is absurdly hard with that kind of rule! The reason why is because the AIs actually DO let go of the accelerator upon hitting Zippers, even upon using blue balloon power ups! There is absolutely NO room for error, because if you don't make the right moves at the beginning or during the race, you aren't going to win! Getting hit by a homing missile or an oil slick is definitely NOT an option either! Because of those problems, it's absurdly hard to win using as little boosts as possible!
Windmill Plains | Silver Coin Challenge as Krunch [Minimal Boosts]:
Since Krunch's top speed is above average, you will not have to worry about the AIs hitting the Zipper on the 1st lap. Just focus on getting the silver coins.
If two AIs hit the Zipper on the 1st lap, it is IMPOSSIBLE to win.

@@BillyBob_McSanchez they have the fastest acceleration but poor top speed, especially Pipsy. Banjo is one of the few with a good top speed. The others are Krunch (who sucks at everything else), Drumstick and T.T, the latter two need to be unlocked first of course

Krunch actually came uninvited, he's a Kremling spy sent by K. Rool to see if Diddy was up to something when he went to Timber Island. Krunch is not friends with the others by any means, in fact the rest of the racers didn't really trust him. He only really earned their trust at the end when everybody was celebrating the defeat of Wizpig. But you're probably right, he probably does have quite the appetite being a Kremling. Probably quite a lot of bananas in his diet!

@@eddierools I know, I read the manual. I kinda don't like that backstory that much. I prefer to imagine he's actually on good terms with the Kongs. How that would have happened, I have no idea; maybe K. Rool exiled him to DK Island when word got out that Krunch was sneaking bites from the king's lunches for the past month or so (it feels like the sort of "Rare humor" type of explanation). But yeah, big eater.

My sister and I got an AV adapter so we could play older consoles on our flatscreens, and I decided to play this game again but this time using Krunch because "he fucking sucks." I did this because I was confident in my racing ability, but man did I underestimate how much more difficult certain bosses and stages would be with Krunch. To be brief, I was stuck on first Wizpig for about three hours and felt like I was gonna go insane. Hats off to you for doing this all with minimal boosts!

Krunch is an absolute monster against the Second Walrus and Octopus races. I recommend anyone who is struggling against them to use Krunch he's able to keep up and eventually outpace them due to awesome top speed. I found however that the easiest boss (in my opinion) with anyone else is the Triceratops. Krunch struggles so badly with that boss, but completely destroys the Octopus which in my opinion is the hardest boss in the game (second race).

The game didn't really make "heavy weight" of much use in the game, so there was a definite inbalance in the game I felt. Also possibly because compared to Mario kart, there were less long track stretches, and less time for a Heavy character to overtake the lower speed types.So Krunch was far harder to use then Pipsy or Tiptup, as Handling and acceleration were more important on the tracks then a high top speed.

Yeah, Krunch's main problem is that his top speed doesn't make up for his handling and acceleration. Drumstick has this problem too, but not nearly as big as Krunch, as his top speed makes up for his handling and acceleration.

When I was a kid I always picked my character depending on how well they handle. Now I use Conker mostly (I dunno I like his white vehicles), but man other than handling the characters don't feel very different. Krunch feels useless stat-wise, he should have had at least a 1 in Handling, 2 or 3 in Acceleration and 4 or 5 in Speed.

Krunch is just as good as TT in plane, and is easily the best in hovercraft, but to master him in Kart is an admirable accomplishment

in the video you can see the struggle i always had with krunch. i can handle him, but its nearly impossible to hit the boosts, even with the "R+B" drift. if you try, it tooks longer than just passing it.
