Phuket old town is a combination of Portuguese, Chinese, Indian and Malay influences due to the fact that the island has a long history of commerce and mineral (tin) mining. Tin mining stopped about 50 years ago when the global tin price collapsed due to over-supply and other materials could replace tin more cheaply.
