Wow! I loved this piece and how it has been performed - the a cappella, the tempo choices, and the organic, modulated energy! What a treat. Thanks so much!

Why do choirs always over articulate spirituals? Who the hell is DON-iel? Love the sound, and especially the dynamics. The conductor is amazing., but lose the Harvard diction.

Shango Bongo EXACTLY what I was thinking. It doesn’t sound as soulful and authentic as it should when the vowels are overdone

I think you need to listen to a performance by the Hogan Chorale and you will note that their diction is equally as precise. This is a choral arrangement of a traditional spiritual, therefore (as George Shirley once told me) you treat the execution of Spirituals no differently than you would a Bach chorale or Schubert art song. This performance was outstanding on many levels and I appreciate the great care the choir and it’s director took in preparation and performance of this outstanding choral composition. But this of course is my personal opinion.

@@dr.geraldcase-blanchard4904 the times are changing and we're emerging from this era of Blackness fitting into White/ European standards. I, for one, am glad this is the case. While the Hogan era produced amazing arrangements of the spirituals, putting the spirituals in concert halls in the first place was the ultimate form of attempting to assimilate our culture for White consumption. That worked in the early Fisk days, for sure, as it established a model by which other HBCUs, including mine, were able to generate revenue, but it's now 2020 and even though this commenter made their statement 2 years ago, it was still a timely sentiment in 2018. Even when the video was uploaded in 2016, these discussions were already underway. So, while the choir did execute this piece rather well, there were some things lacking. For one, the original issue brought up in the comment, the diction. Secondly, the awkward bouncing/ dancing. And finally, for me, the strange smiling. I understand that some in our profession instruct students to smile in order to keep in key, but these two in tandem send out a message that lead me to believe that technical work was done, but not work on authenticity, nor the history for the students. I could be 100% wrong about that, but this is how it comes across anytime after 2010.

This was horrible to me my main thing i hate is all the movement i sang from elementary to high and choir scholarships to 2 colleges for singing and i went and i have never understood why some people do all that moving and looking at each other stand still and sing dang u might miss something the director is tryna tell u seeing that you aren't looking at them i hate all that moving ifvu can't keep still u might not need to be in choir
@sethroy43186 жыл бұрын
you clearly don' understand the style. it's not supposed to be stiff like a dies irae. different styles require different things. also the director probably asked for the movement since movement makes for better musicality in a piece like this

its okay i understand people like you might not have been in a good choir before , but that's typically what an engaging choir does......move

yeah so clearly you don’t understand the meaning and purpose behind the music seems like maybe you see music as a thing to be done robotically
